Wow. Now it's just Wallgreens and CVS. There used to be another that Rite Aid bought out but I can't remember what it was called.

Not really. Wal-Mat has a pharmacy, K-Mart has a pharmacy, every single regional grocery store chain has a pharmacy.

Wow I remember when Eckerds died. Used to get all my meds filled there.

I feel like my mom must've had a knack for only shopping at doomed stores or something. Eckerds was always her pharmacy of choice, so I was there like every other week as a kid. I think the grocery stores and gas stations she shopped at are gone now, too.

The steady move towards everything being owned by Buy-N-Large makes that true of everyone. All of the grocery stores and pharmacies where I grew up have been bought out and renamed multiple times. Only one gas station is still the same company.

CVS is a big one but they're more East coast-only.

They're all over SoCal.

I'm a Publix guy.

When I was a kid, the local Walgreens was a dump and there weren't many locations in our area. I always assumed the chain was on its last legs. Guess I was wrong.

Yeah, Walgreens always seemed like the K-Mart of drug stores.

Genovese is the pharmacy I grew up with in NY. Then Eckerd's bought it. Then RiteAid bought Eckerd's.

So now that Eckerd's has bought RiteAds, it has a distant connection to Genovese...which is nice :-D

Well that's annoying. I quite like my Target Pharmacy, hopefully it won't involve any staff changes.

My aunt is a tech at a Target pharmacy and as far as I know they're keeping their jobs.

I however, am a Walgreen's employee and this news kind of irked me for reasons I don't really want to get into, but the Walgreen's of 2015 is not the same company that I started working for in 2009.

Go on.

explains the Walgreens store cut this year... Still, it seems unhealthy to allow two companies to control the bulk of the prescription network in the country, though it provides openings for others. I question how long Walmart will bother with a independent pharmacy business given the profit headwinds.

The CVS/target deal still hasn't cleared and we've been hearing some chatter that the deal may be stalling. The take over plan changed from January to TBA.

That said, many Walgreens and rite aids sit adjacent... If allowed will be interesting to see what happens in that balance.

This will be... interesting where I live. There's a Walgreens down the road from the Rite Aid. Said Rite Aid is in the same plaza as Krogers. They're right next door, in fact. o_O;

I have a RiteAid on my corner, and right across the street is a Wal Greens.

I go to Rite Aid cause its closer, but my prescription drugs started costing around $240. So I went to Wal Greens and got a much cheaper price of $140.

I hope this buyout dont increase my drug prices.

I actually like Walgreens stores sometimes, but the town I live in (~5,000 people) has 3 family-owned pharmacies, so I use one of those instead.

Rite Aid will remain as-is (for now). It will eventually be converted to Walgreens or Duane Reade.

Duane Reade isn't going anywhere. It's pretty much a NYC institution.
