I hardly think I'm a snob for saying that, say, The 40 Year Old Virgin and, I dunno, Talladega Nights aren't on the same quality level. Some would call that sanity.

My post wasn't really directed at you but I would argue they are on the same level of subjective quality and I like both. They are simply different kinds of comedies although they are both parodies of sub-cultures.

I disagree. Maybe Talladega Nights is on the same level, as say, the Apatow-related Superbad, but both movies lack the (oh god why am I saying this) Romantic (in a zero-to-hero way) aspects shared by 40YOV, Knocked Up, and even Freaks and Geeks (when the show is taken as one overall arc). Apatow's "chosen" pictures balance the comedy with a blend of sentimentality (and sometimes [often?] he gets too close to letting the sentimentality take over) that is completely absent from the "Screwball" comedies he writes and produces.

I haven't seen Freaks and Geeks so I won't comment on that. Perhaps that is a very deep show. But 40 year old virgin wasn't especially deep or profound for me. It's a story about a "loser" who finds love. It's not exactly Annie Hall. Is it a more balanced traditional less broad movie than Talledega nights. Sure. Is it any funnier as a comedy? Not for me it wasn't.

I can see someone having the opposite opinion of course and I quite liked 40 year old virgin. I'm just saying it doesn't strike me as modern high art. I think some people appreciate the "culture" and by that I mean social niche group of 40 year old virgin versus Talladega nights but that's just my opinion.

I wouldn't call any of this high art, merely entertainment.

Maybe you would better understand where I'm coming from if you experienced Freaks and Geeks. If you need any encouragement, very few people dislike the show, or have anything particularly negative to say about it.

I'll get around the Freaks and Geeks. I'm sure it is a good show and like I said I like 40 year old Virgin. I always cracked back on people when there was a short term backlash against the movie here on GAF. I just think there is a lost appreciation for really good "dumb art" or "dumb comedy" or broad comedy for lack of a better word and I tend to rally to that cause.

I thought Talledega Night was hilarious but that was mostly because of John C and Cohen. The funny thing about that movie was I rented it right when it came out on netlix and I watched maybe 15 minutes of it before turning it off and never bothering with it again. Lately they have beeen showing it non stop of one of those hdmovie channels ( starz I think) and I caught the middle of it just liek in the background and ended up loving it. I will give this new movie a shot also I gotta go back and watch Anchorman again since I didn't get very far in to that movie either.

40 Year Old Virgin's saving grace were the supporting cast. Steve Carrell was way too dry and rigid for most of his role, and the movie seemed to take itself too seriously as a result.

Anchorman had some stuff which was really funny, but lacked any meat, it was a complete mess of scenes. I can't figure out if it wanted to be a movie or a mess of scenes; did anyone watch the movie before releasing it? Annoying.

I thought Superbad was awesome because it knew what it was trying to be, from beginning to end, as WM said above, a screwball comedy. Great leads and supporting cast, awesome comedic timing and execution, and great shock value.

Which leads me to this...

Walk Hard looks absolutely horrible.

I'm Ron Burgandy?

Saw a prescreening in San Francisco the other day. It's a little bit slower paced, but it's still just as funny as the other Apatow-like movies. There are so many goddamn cameos in the film, it's awesome. I'm definitely going to watch it again when it comes out.

Also, John C. Reilly came to the prescreening, said a few words, and then went next door to sing his Dewey Cox tour concert. Unfortunately, I didn't go to that.

This movie seems like it will be the shit because anything done by Judd Apatow these days turns into gold. Oh and Paul Rudd= Greatness, so i'm really looking forward to seeing him in this.

I'm pretty sure that Jenna Fischer shows more skin in this movie than ever before. I also think she has a sex scene.

Now are y'all interested?

Did he scissor kick anyone and yelp "LAST RESORT!" at all?

holy shit. you guys should try to catch this Reel Comedy special on Comedy Central about the Dewey Cox movie. It's pretty damn funny... usually these shows are just stupid slapfests, but this one is actually good.

Just had an interview with the elderly first wife of Dewey Cox, and she's like "But I moved out to Tucson, and now I have a new relationship. Primarily sexual." and John Mayer comes out and starts talking, "Usually, you know, I don't comment. But now I will comment. I love going to her garden, and watching that flower grow, and watching her flower spread and bud, and then picking it... with my penis." :lol

god damn. i know i've gotta see this film now.

i actually got to see this already and even met the cast, last saturday there was an advanced screening of it and then afterwards was a concert of them, was very funny

I will see this.

Plz don't, I watched this shit back in August (early screening). It's absolute shit. The jokes are too fuckin predictable which kills the comedy in an instant like Judd Apatow tries too hard to make a joke seem meaningful and laughable.. Tasteless stereotypes about jews, blacks and other races, corny dick jokes, bland characters, awful dialogue, and the movie is too fuckin long. With all aforementioned above, it is extremely unbearable to witness an Apatow film being a joke within a joke of itself.

Neither. I can't stand people that base their movie watching off of rotten tomatoes. If you think you might enjoy a film then go watch it. Don't pay the critics any attention. I'm also not a big fan of blind Apatow fanboys that will go watch a three hour movie of him taking a shit in a mason jar just because he wrote it.

love apatow's latest stuff (knocked up and superbad were gold) and the reviews look great, but this still stinks of the stupid. i'm torn. i'll probably check it out and hope for the best

Following Rotten Tomatoes is a lot like watching the local weather report. If you watch five different stations you'll get five different reports, and not one of them will be dead on, but odds are you'll know whether or not it's going to rain.

The problem with reading reviews prior to watching a film is that it has a great possibility of distorting your view on the film. For example, if I read ten reviews that praise a movie and then I watch it I guarantee you that I'll be more inclined to say, "That movie was awesome." But I don't approach film the way a lot of people do. I intentionally shield myself from opinions until after I watch something.

You know, Knocked up was alright, the 1st 30minutes into the film was hilarious, but then it dragged too much and got boring for me. I love Superbad, the only Apatow film with my highest recommendation and respect. NOW that movie was hilarious from beginning til the end.

Either way, agree or disagree in seeing Dewey Cox. Your choice.
