Want to play Ys. Where should I start?

Dark Fact is entirely skill based, there is no luck at all involved. Floor disappears when you hit him, and his pattern is consistent and makes sense.

I'd say start with Oath in Felghana or Origin, they are generally considered to be the best games in the series. Most of the extra PSP features in Oath aren't really important, and Chronicles is more or less the same. I'd go with the PC versions unless you just want to be able to play them on the go.

You can't really go wrong with any of the more recent releases though, all of them are really good games. 1 and 2 might be kind of rough if you don't like retro games though.

Very skill based games and then there's that... rng luck boss. Worst boss of any of the games that I've played in the series.

There's no luck here. The floor doesn't disappear randomly. It disappears exactly where you were standing when you damage the boss.

if i would start by having a Vita only, is Ys 1&2 Chronicles the same as the original Ys 1&2? like a remake?

Ys 1&2 Chronicles
Ys Oath in Felghana
Ys Seven
Ys Memories of Celceta

these all worth playing?

Chronicles is a remake of the first two games. And I'd say all of those are worth playing, yeah.

So I want to get into this series. Where should I start? I know there are games on the PSP and PC. Is there a big difference as to which version is better? Or is it just a preference?

Thanks!
There is an Ys community thread, but overall start with Oath in Felghana. 1 and 2's combat system is rather archaic and might not impress first times or newcomers.

Oath is available for play on PS Vita and on PC via Steam.

After Oath, and taking into consideration official releases that have faster access to, you can jump into either:
Ys Origins on Steam (improves on Oath's gameplay)
Ys Seven on PSP/Vita

As someone who got into the series only a couple of years ago, I started with Origin and had a good time. Oath in Felghana is also a good starting point, but it's harder than Origin.

Don't recommend starting with 1 & 2 Chronicles, though. I think they're fun, but they play very differently from the more recent games. They can also be very, very obtuse.

Thanks, i have an 11 hour long flight ahead of me this sunday and i'm pondering on my Vita gaming options :D

Fair warning: Ys 1 and 2 are not long games. In fact, Ys 1 probably wouldn't last you your entire flight. I'd recommend any of the other games you mentioned for your flight.

Hmm, they might be good for my flight anyways as i will have other games on the system too and if i can complete them in one "forced" sitting, in a plane that would be good to power through them to get to the more modern entries :D (and i have another 11 hour flight back in a few weeks)

Don't play Origins first it will fucking ruin you on the older ones. Don't get me wrong Origins is amazing but going backwards from it is something I wouldn't suggest.

Ys 1 will probably take you 6-10 hours, Ys 2 is a bit longer.

Let me also tell you another good reason to play through the remake of Ys 1&2 - the soundtrack, it's so good.

I played through my first Ys title last year actually. I really ended up enjoying Memories of Celceta and it was very approachable for a first time player.

I played through Ys: The Oath in Felghana for the first time on my Vita (the PSP game) a couple of months ago and loved every minute of it. As soon as I was done I bought Ys Seven, but am not enjoying it nearly as much, so much so that I've taken a break from it. So I say get Ys: The Oath in Felghana.

Absolutely delicious.

In any case: I recommend starting from the beginning. At the end of the day, you can probably split the Ys series into three core styles. Ys 1, 2, and 4 (PC Engine) use the bump system, Oath (remake of III), VI, and Origin share the same combat style, and Ys 7 and Celceta are similar to one another as well. Each set of games plays fairly differently from one another, but they're all pretty great as far as I'm concerned.

Ys II is in my top ten favorite games of all time, so I recommend starting with Ys I&II on the PC. It's a great version of those games.

I've been wondering this myself. My plan was to play the first 2 games on the PSP first whenever I do decide to get into the series, because I heard they were pretty short. I wasn't sure what to play after. Looks like most people are recommending The Oath in Felghana.

Ys V: Kefin, The Lost Kingdom of Sand.... well lets just say it's the most deceive entry in the series. It was released only for the SNES and is a vast departure from many of the other games. It's closer to Zelda than the other entries, but it's pretty generic. There's a fan translation if you want to play it and you have a means of patching it.

Cool. Didn't realize there was a translation. Thanks for the informative post.

Start from Ys I&II.

Only, only start from Oath in Felghana if you really, really cannot stand the bump system.

Ys as a whole, is a great franchise with 3 very diverse gameplay identities. The best way to enjoy Ys is to go through all of them.

I played Origins first and then Ys I remake.
didnt ruin the story at all. even better, it made me realize who the Fact and Tovah families were and what battles had to ensue prior to Ys I.

Also I found Origins much more engaging because in contrast to Adol based Ys games, Yunica, Hugo and Claw could talk and interact. Too bad there arent still any Japanese or English voices for that game. Would have been even better.

The dialog between the main lead and the enemies or allies and the character portraits, creates some very dramatic and tense moments.

while in Adol you simply hear the narrator say "Adol explained, nodded etc" without any picture at all.

in Ys Origins you become one with the character like no other action RPG game.

so i did just buy Ys Chronicles 1&2 for Vita, what's the difference and which one should i choose when it asks if i want to play Chronicles (2009) or Complete (2001) mode? :D there's no explanation at all.

All that changes is the artstyle. Try them both out and decide which one you like better.

Protip: Complete art is vastly better.

I go with Chronicles music but you can't really go wrong with any of them.

My first introduction to Ys was with Oath in Felghana. I was amazed with how much I loved it. I enjoyed being able to jump around and attack, explore for treasure, and most prominently besides the gameplay, the awesome soundtrack. It's now one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, and I've been coaxed by it to listen to the Ys III original soundtrack.

I then moved onto Ys Seven, and despite it lacking the ability to jump, it implements a three person party system. Unlike Oath, Ys Seven is wholly original, as it's not a remake or anything like that.

I have Memories of Celceta in retail form for the Vita, but I've yet to play it. I'm on Uncharted and Wipeout on Vita right now.

Anyway, I want to get around to the first two games, but they're rather expensive for the PSP. I guess I'll just do Steam eventually, even though I've never purchased anything from the service before.
