Warhammer Battle March (360)

Anyone get this? It came out this week finally after numerous delays. Looks like an RTS set in fantasy realm without base building in it.

I may impulse buy it tomorrow if I get the bug bad enough... I loved LOTR: BFM2....

This game seems to be coming under the radar everywhere.

The PC version that came out like... 2 years ago? A year and half? Whatever it was, pretty shit game. Unless they've completely overhauled it I'd pass.

The PC game was Mark of Chaos. This is an expansion. I believe the 360 game has the full game + expansion. I played MoC on the PC a while back and enjoyed it. I hate base-building in RTS games, so this one was right up my alley. It wasn't a great game, but if you liked Warhammer: Dark Omen or the Myth games from like 10 years ago, this one might hit the spot.

This expansion has already come out for PC, as well.

It bears resemblance to Dark Omen and Myth but never reaches the quality bar set by those games. It just felt very bland and unengaging to me. Then again they could have changed it up a bunch with the new stuff so who knows.

Well being that the game has basically no press, it probably will drop in price 20 or 30 bucks really quick, a la Dark Messiah... I can probably just wait. Thanks for the info.

I was hoping this was a port of Dawn of war. But I really want to play this...nobody has picked it up? And no reviews yet?

PC warhammer fans were burned by their utterly shit support, broken multiplayer (yay, gamespy again, plus slow patching), and generally lackluster gameplay.

Which is a shame, because the graphics were nice, and they did a fine job of capturing the various warhammer races of awesomeness.

I'd been hoping it was going to be Kohan 3.0 in Warhammer form, but it was not. Multi was awful, and the single player wasn't especially inspired.

I guess the 360 version might be cool if you're desperate for something warhammer themed, shrug.

I got the bug today and used some trade in credit to pick this up (figure a game today that interests me is better then having gamestop make interest on my 60 bucks for the next 2 or 3 months). I'll have impressions up by tomorrow. I loved LOTR: BFME2 and Command and Conquer3 as they were my first ever RTS experiences.

I dig anything with a fantasy setting with castles, seige equipment and huge battles. I know major sites are probably going to shit on this game since it is a port. I've read a couple of non major reviews that say basically the controls are a little complex (but ok after the initial learning curve), and that some of the campaign battles have some harsh battle conditions that need to be met (like have a certain regiment of troops to finish the level, or else start over). That is fine with me as I like a challenge.

Positives I heard - Really lengthy campaign modes and good multiplayer.
Best looking RTS on the 360
Good voice acting
Good customization and depth of units.

First foray into Warhammer universe, I'm looking forward to it.

First 10 minute impression is that they definitely still feels like a PC game that they ported over (can tell with the interface).. I didn't have too much time to do much before I had to turn it off. There are proper tutorials to learn the game system that I need to play tomorrow to give it a proper chance.

Out of those 10 minutes, 3 were CGI intro, and it was gorgeous (hopefully the whole game is littered with these...

Other plus is the dark elves have some very scantily clad units, that is for sure. The variety in the unit design looks to be pretty impressive as well as they all look unique and different (different sizes, etc...)

Got through the tutorials and the first mission. Also found that after missions, you go into town and buy more recruits, upgrade weapons/armor, siege equipment, heal your existing army, etc...

The controls are complex, but certainly learn able. They are different then the EA RTS games on the 360, but a little similar. They make use of the D pad in combination with the triggers a lot more since there is a ton more things to do in this game with formations, merging groups of troops together, etc...
The actual game is coming across as a more complex and hands-on Bladestorm type of game, which is really making me happy as I traded Bladestorm in toward this since it got too repetitive.

There is absolutely a shit load of different troops among the 6 available factions. The character models are really creative as well.

I'm looking forward to putting in more time into this. It really separates itself from other RTS because you don't have to farm resources with base building.

Make sure you have a big TV to play this on, as I think a smaller TV would be hard to see somethings...

So far, so good and I'm glad I picked it up

There are 3 campaigns. One for humans, One for Orcs, and One for Chaos...

I read that the campaigns will probably last 40-50 hours for 1p. Don't have the ability to host videos as you are requesting.

Played this game all day while Mercenaries 2, Too Human and Viva Pinata 2 (all addictive games for me) sat waiting their turn. What a nice surprise this game has turned out to be.

This game is basically LOTR: BFME2 + Bladestorm + Fire Emblem (your troops die permanently if you don't watch after them) + Strategy, Strategy, Strategy. I've heard some comparisons to the Total War games (of which I have never played) as well. I've always wanted to play the Total War games, so I guess this is as close as I can get right now.

The controls are a non issue after playing the game for a few hours and learning them. I'm playing one campaign mode (3 different ones) now, and not only is it quite long (6 hours into it and I am halfway done I think), but it is pretty diverse as well. Some missions have you taking on foes with just your heroes, some missions are survival with your army, some are castle sieges, some are just hero duel stages etc... It is doing a good job of gradually introducing new units and upgrades to the game, and even changing up the factions you play as so you don't get too bored.

And the game is challenging, but not cheap. There have not been any missions so far where I have felt I was cheaply beaten. I change my strategy the next time and get a different result.

I read the Mark of Chaos reviews where people had lots to complain about. Battle March is basically Mark of Chaos + an Expansion upgrade. So the 360 version is like getting double the content. Apparently a lot of the criticisms that were valid on Mark of Chaos have been cleaned up in Battle March. I don't have anything major to complain about at all.

Since Mark of Chaos is a 2 year old game, there are some cut scenes where the could definitely have beefed up the graphics on those, but it is all good.

If you want to try a very fun RTS, with a huge variety of cool looking units, with a lot of content, and also something a little different then the normal RTS (no resource farming), give this game a try.

Did you say Bladestorm? Consider me now interested in this game!

Yeah, Bladestorm because you have to upgrade your troops outside of combat inside towns you run across and and you have to buy more regiments of what is available. Also Bladestorm because you can control the game with a top down view just like a regular RTS, but you can zoom the camera all the way in, and even control the camera to function like a 3rd person camera as well.

Outside of the lengthy campaign modes, there also is skirmish options, including a specific one where you can do castle seiges, and another one where you capture buildings so you can gain more resources and replace troops if need be.

This game has really surprised the hell out of me and I am enjoying it immensely.

Wait so is this more like dark omen/shadow of the horned rat or your traditional rts?? Do you choose what units to bring before battle or make them during battle??

You choose beforehand.

Well is the game worth 60 bucks if you are a casual gamer that likes big blockbusters? Probably not when you could put the money toward Gears or Fable 2 or something else. If you have a genuine interest in the game type and the subject matter, then absolutely. This is probably the best example of a fantasy based RTS(but different then the common RTS) game that has been released on consoles that has so much strategy.

It is a welcome fresh air. Is this game probably going to drop in price quick? Might be easy to predict based on how many people are coming in posting their impressions. But by me taking the plunge, I can tell you that I feel that I am getting my moneys worth.

This thread might be lucky if it reaches 50 posts total, but I can tell you I am enjoying what I am playing and feel good that I am supporting a developer that puts something out like this. Shame that the publisher Namco doesn't put more advertising into it...

I'm intrigued. How similar is it to Myth? I used to play the hell out of that on my old Mac.

I LOVED Myth 1 and 2 back in the day. Such amazing games from Bungie. And to think most people only know them from Halo. :lol

Hmm... interest rising.

But budget is tight and I've many games to purchase yet (maybe).

Marathon got me really started in gaming. I still remember playing that demo for the first time... I don't think any gaming experience has been similar since, or before.

Funny thing is, I never really got into Halo all that much. I think I arrived too late - Halo 3 was basically my introduction to the series.

But yeah. Myth 1 and 2 were incredible. The dwarves...

Yeah, I was a Marathon fan too. It was a great evolution on what Doom was doing at the time, and Myth was one of my fave RTS. The fact that there was no base building or resources to manage meant that it came down to how you used your troops and which ones you selected to go with you. The story, and story telling, were amazing as well.

If this game compares to Myth, I'm instantly intrigued.

Ah, yes. The voice narration was great. Used to be into Warcraft 2 but all the resource management stuff became annoying once I played Myth.

I used to collect Warhammer miniatures as a kid, too (though I never actually played), so I think I'll have to check this one out. Stars aligned and whatnot.

Added to Gamefly queue.

It's quite similar to Myth. Not always as elegant in control (speaking of the PC version, I haven't played it on 360) and sometimes adding some unnecessary complexities, but I enjoyed the game quite a bit for what it was. I hate base-building RTS games, but enjoy games more in this vein, so take my impressions with that in mind.

Gamespot put out a pisspoor review on this game 5.5. The 2 main criticisms in the review stem around the controls (which go away after tutorials and about 2 hours with the game). I can do all the complex commands this guy complains about with ease and to me the controls are a non factor right now. And the other complaint is about lack of online community - This is total bullshit, and not a fault of the game at all and should not be factored into a score. The game came out last week, and has basically no advertising to it. Of course adopters of the game are going to be slow to realize this is out and pick it up.

The only thing worthwhile about the review is this picture that they reference in it. Yes the game does look like this in action if you put your camera that close, and yes there are bad ass castle seiges in it as well...

I'm glad that my attempt to spur some interest in this game is having a little more success now from what it seems... If others have impressions, please continue to post them

On a side note, Gamespot has now given Mercs 2, Too Human and Warhammer: Battle March scores in the 5 range. I have all those games, and they are all pretty fun and certainly are more worthy then the reviews given to them by gamestop. I'm pretty much going to not read gamespot reviews anymore as they are so far off the mark it isn't even funny...

If Battle March takes a nose dive like Prizefighter did...I'll come back to let others know. Regardless I just played this really fun escort mission where there was a shit load of strategy involved units coming at me every which way to distract me and make my cargo be put in danger. I lost at the very end, but can see so many other different strategies to take on it, that is for sure. Looking forward to trying it again.

Sinatar - Where did you get that very descriptive tag from???:lol
