Wario Land: Shake It! IGN review

All of the vague attacks on Parish's review without actually coming up with a rebuttal to any of his points were pretty sad, posting that unflattering picture is just bordering on a personal attack, all because of a letter grade? That's just lame.

So far I'm enjoying what I've played of the game but I haven't played enough to know whether I agree or disagree with his opinion. I can respect not agreeing with him but some of the shit posted in this thread is simly juvenile.

GAF in general has had a problem with Parish since U GnG anyways

Though I must admit I'm not a fan of him shitting on DKC everytime 16 bit platformers come up on Retronauts

Not only is it not very well written (it reads more like an angry fanboy rant than a professional review), it is also factually incorrect. The levels so far are much more open-ended than they were in Wario Land 4, especially the escape sequences which can branch out into several different paths.
I'll tell you what reads like an angry fanboy rant...

i'm not paying $50 for it because wario land 4 was boring, and this seems to be wario land 4 with added boring. if the us version had come over sooner i might have been tempted to buy it in support of awesome spritework, but we're on the brink of the fall games rush, and i've got to be more selective. i'm with you in loathing the notion that 2d games should be all budget priced and/or downloadable, but the fact that we've recently gotten several downloadable 2d games that beat the pants off any conceivable wario land does make that $50 pricetag harder to swallow

I may be in the same boat... I liked WL and VBWL, but I wasn't all that fond of WL2 nor WL3 - both games bored me, overall. WL4 was a bit better, but still not really a return to the more interesting WL/VBWL game I prefer. While I'm sure I'd have playing the new Warioland, the price and the reports on its length dissuade me a bit. I'll probably pick it up for $30, though...

This is bad writing? I'd like to know where it is that you're reading these brilliant reviews where this review in comparison is "not well written", because this is some of the best game writing I've read in a long time.

So far, the first world clear, it's a solid platformer. Wario Land: Shake It definently has got that modern Nintendo egalitarianism at work throughout the "main" game. Just running through the levels is ridiculously easy, there are very few enemies that will actually cause you any sort of damage early on. If this is indicative of the whole I could see how people could just coast through Shake It in a few short hours. I think I would have probably completed the second world already if I hadn't focused on clearing the challenges and finding the treasures in the first world.

Finding all of the treasures and completing all of the challenges are definently where the difficulty, length and replay value lie, the question will be if you want to do them though. If you're a completionist it could take you a while, if not, you should probably think of just renting the game. I'm not entirely certain if they're something I will bother completing at this point. I don't know, we'll see. I really like how the levels really do start to open up the more you play. Some of the things you have to do to clear environmental obstacles to get to items and warp pipes that seem just beyond reach are starting to border on being somewhat clever.

Awww, damn. I hate for a gamer to go without...why dont you try to get it off of steam? Might feel too weird?

Yeah it would be kind of weird without a controller. I've never used steam either.

But anyway we're going off topic! Wario. The hand drawn sprites look awesome.

that'll be the day...

Well, we (the US) did get an absolutely fantastic 2D sidescroller released on the WiiWare this week... Wario Land: Shake It should be nice to play to counter the utter ass-raping I have been getting from MM9 though. :P

Wario is pretty much is a poor woman's Mario anyway.

So I've been playing through the first world for the past hour or two trying to get all treasures and all missions. I gotta say, if you aren't going for 100% in each level you're cheating yourself. The level design is impressive, it seems like every inch of every level has a purpose. There is no filler.

After spending more time with this game(the past few hours), i must completely agree with this. Not only is there no filler as you put it, but the transitions from one "platform" or "scene" to the next is absolutely phenomenal. Im half way through the second world, and if it keeps up this pace, then i must say...this game will be great. The music is also some of the catchiest ive heard in a LONG time. Its classy, fresh, and fits the on screen action so nicely.

This games is the real deal. If you let it be itself and not try to turn it into a mario clone, then it really becomes a dream to play. Its really a bit of a different kind of platformer, and it deserves much praise.

Shit is a damn A+ so far for me.

Actually, you could make a case that the first WL (after all it's called Super Mario Land 3) is, but the subsequent games in the series have a different focus than Mario games.

I know I'm just asking for trouble around here (since you jerks like picking on us), but I put up Dave's review of the game yesterday. (Plus, if you go check out the review, you can see the slight reform I did to our site, since the full remake got a bit delayed and I seriously couldn't take that old design even one day longer.)
cool review. to the point.

ps: did not notice the reform, lol.

really

I appreciate that a good portion of this review is Nintendo bashing.

+1 respect for Gunpei Yokoi and Virtual Boy mention.

It seems very strange to me that all the reviewers are bashing the game for no length and no challenge: there's 13 very long secret levels in addition to the 20 normal ones that are a pain in the ass to conquer. They easily extend the play time by a good 10 hours.

so that's what the extra treasure slots were for..

Well I guess Nintendo forgot to send those unlock-all-Codes.

Just got it, played about one and a half hours so far, up to world 2.

I must say, the graphics and quality of the animation is looks incredible finally seeing it in 480p on my telly. It has the same kind of wow factor for me that Aladdin and Earthworm Jim did on the Mega Drive, and this looks exactly how I expected the games of the future to look back then. Why did it take developers so long to do something like this again? (i.e get traditional animators to do all the work) Yeah, it's a tad easy, but I'm enjoying it so far.

I have to agree fully, plus if you're going for all the treasure and all the mission things, its going to add time and difficulty. Its like every reviewer just ran through the game doing the bare minimum and then bitched and moaned.

Most do just that.

It is sad because when we receive a rare game like this ideally most reviewers should step up to the plate and give it a fair shake instead of quickly lumping it in with things like Kirby Squeak Squad and Master of Disguise.

Game is quickly shaping up to be my second favorite Wii game of 2008 after Endless Ocean. $50 really isn't an issue once you realize how much content is included but I reckon more folks would be more willing to bite at a $39.99 price point.

So I booted up this game finally and started playing it, and it's stuck in 16:9 mode on my 4:3 TV. I've dug around for the past twenty minutes in-game and in the manual and I can't find where it says I can change it.

Anyone help?

Oh btw this game is awesome.

Ah, hadn't realized I set them at 16:9. I think I must've liked the smaller Wii menu icons...

Edit- Much better, thanks.

Why isn't there an oficial thread? This game deserves it s much.

Anyway just got it 2 hours ago and played it since then.

THIS IS SOOO GOOD!

The obvious first: The graphics are amazing. And I mean OMGLOOKHOWFLUIDANDEVERYTHING amazing. Seriously it's like an interactive cartoon. We just NEED more games with 2D graphics like that. so Awesome.

What suprised me the most is the music. It's really great. Pretty catchy and lot of variety. Why did no review really mention that? The sound effects are great as well. Like when wario plos in and out of tubes. So great.

And for the gameplay: I think it's really perfect the way it is. Sure, nobody will have problems finishing a level (at least in World 1). But finding all treasures and doing all mission? That's where this game starts. For example one level had missions like "Take no damage" and "don't fall into water". And I thought to myself "they got to be kidding me" 5 minutes later wario swam through water, 7 minutes later he landed on some spikes :lol

It's not hard by any means but imo it is challenging. Anyway I think I'll need at least 3 hours per world which would make this game 15 hours long. But I haven't seen any of the secret stages yet :)

To sum up: If you like exploring BUY THIS GAME! If you just rush through it, you're missing most of the fun.

I rented it last night, because the Force Unleashed was checked out, and my wife has been wanting more video games for us to play together. I haven't played it yet, but my wife played for about half an hour with me watching. She loves it, and I've fairly impressed.

The secret stages are rough! As far as the missions and such go. Yow!

So I finished the game two nights ago. Awesome last boss! He was actually fairly challenging (assuming you are not buying potions from the pirate shop--I don't recommend that since the game is generally easy enough without 'em). I had a ton of fun with all the bosses in fact.

Okay, okay guys... there's a secret map that I'm having trouble getting.
It's the one on the secret level in the second world, and the map is hidden on the ceiling next to one of those slot machines, and I just can't figure out how to get the damn thing! Tried throwing a ball and an enemy up at it. Can't it with my head... and since it's on the ceiling, doing Wario's power slam or whatever (the same move I used to get the previous maps) doesn't seem to work. Gah! I just cant seem to get it.

I just rented the game and I must play every level before it goes back!

Edit:
I meant the secret level in the third world. Whoops.

Yeah, I'm trying to do what I did with SMG- clear each world before moving on. It's damn tough though.

Honestly, I'm not sure that a five hour estimated gameplay time is much to gripe about. At least they're not unnecessarily raising the difficulty or cloning levels just to raise the amount of entertainment it can provide.

I'm buying this when it goes on sale and adding it to my Wii rainy day stockpile.

I've beaten the first three worlds and it feels like Braid designed for an 8 year old. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the monotony of the levels is really starting to bore me. And the second part of every level when you're running back to the portal thing is so fucking frustrating at times.

Been playing and liking this. Just wanted to chime in to say that if you don't go back to the stages to complete them you're doing it wrong.

WTF, I thought this game was supposed to be easy. The third world boss just kicked my ass.

Pretty fun so far. Nice music and great graphics, too. I miss the Wario transformations, though. The only two I've encountered so far have been the pipe that makes you run really fast and the traditional fire Wario.

Yeah, I'm liking this one a lot. I'm a big fan of 2D platformers though, so that's to be expected.

Very Nintendo. Plays a lot like Yoshi's Island DS and Super Princess Peach. Love this game and I'm taking it nice and slow.

This game is a definite GOTY contender, as far as I'm concerned. Easily my favorite in the WL series.

As someone else mentioned, it looks pretty great on HD sets, too.

I'm having a blast getting all the treasures and doing all the missions randomly after I open some more areas. Also played one of the secret stages and it was much harder to get the goods than the usual ones. After Mega Man 9 it's funny to play such a relaxing platformer. :lol

I think it was because of this.

This game is pretty awesome. At times it can feel a bit dull, but for the most part it is great. And son of a bitch does this game look good. More games that look like this.

This was the first thing that came to mind, but only because the enemies are so damn nice and happy looking. They dont even harm you when you run in to them, hahaha. I hate killing them though, ill always think about it, then sit them back down because they are so nice. :lol :lol :lol :lol

Im a sap

I agree that this is a pretty game and I hope that it's the beginning of some sort of trend with Nintendo but after clearing the second world there's something missing for me and I can't quite put my finger on what. I felt the same way about New Super Mario Bros. They're both perfectly fine games but to me both felt/feel like they lacked 'soul' for want of a better word.

I like the puzzles in this game. There have been several times when I've seen something and spent like ten minutes trying to figure out how to get there, and then just tried something crazy and it worked.

A couple of notable examples:

In the train level,
there's a bit with three flames blowing down sequentially, and a block you have to break while dashing on the other side. I figured you had to time it just right to run through and not get hit. But it turns out you're supposed to duck and slide under them.

Then in another level, there was something too high to jump to, and no boxes or bouncing enemies to jump off of. There was, however, a fork guy. The solution, it turned out, was to throw the fork guy into the wall, and he'd stick into it, and you could bounce off of him up to the ledge.

This game is so relaxing after MM9. I'm enjoying it so far. I'm almost done with world 3 though... and theres only 5 worlds? Probably will be the shortest Wii game I've played.

Do you do all the missions and did you find all treasures? If not, go back and do that.

Hmm.

The game feels like a less annoying version of Warioland 4, mixed with just a bit of SML3:Warioland... but without powerups, sadly.

The game feels a bit too -slow- most of the time...

It's good, mind you, I'm just wondering what happens now that I've started the second world.
