It wasn't really a great movie to begin with. I liked it a lot on my first viewing but on re-watch all the flaws are really apparent. Emily Blunt is the only thing that saves it from being completely forgettable.

It's Groundhog Day with mechs and aliens. It's a fun movie.

Every time my husband brings up Edge of Tomorrow I have to think about what the hell he's talking about for a good 3 minutes. Even after seeing it, I couldn't connect the name with the movie. I must say, at least with Live, Die, Repeat I would know which movie they were talking about.

If they had called it Live Die Repeat from the start, that wouldn't have been so bad. But instead, this just comes off as awkward as shit with the need to keep the Edge of Tomorrow name...

I didn't realize Deadline, EW, Variety and every other Hollywood trade was run by GAFers.

"Performed not so great" is not the same as "bombed." I'm not even trying to defend the movie as I have no interest in ever seeing it. I just think people tend to speak in extremes way too much.

Should have went with "Live. Die. Repeat" from the start. Straight to the point. Would still prefer "All You Need is Kill", but it's understandable why they didn't go with that.

Sounds more like a tag line than a title.
I think it literally was their tag line for the movie. At least have I seen it during their marketing campaign

edit: here it is. They just switched places

All you need is kill is a bad title, its grammatically terrible and doesn't even fit the story the way it's supposed to be doing.

Edge of Tomorrow isn't great either, nor is Live.Die.Repeat but both are better than having a nonsense sounding title.

The movie industry doesn't work like that.

Blockbusters need to make huge margins, and they are overwhelmingly front loaded with a few exceptions with huge legs every few years - Titanic, Avatar, TDK. For a movie of that budget, a $50 million opening weekend is fucking fantastic. A $30 million opening weekend is dismal.

They hit $20 million.

It's a matter of expectations. A studio won't be hugely disappointed if a $20 million indie barely breaks even. You invest $175 million in a film and it maybe breaks even after promotion and distribution costs? That's a financial stinker.

As I was watching the movie, I was wondering if "All you Need is Kill" was part of the chant that J squad was reciting on the base.

What do you do? KILL
What do you do? KILL
What do you need? KILL
ALL I NEED IS KILL

I thought that would have made the title fit just fine. ADR Bill Paxton asking the troops, and the troops responding back.

Memorable title restored.

Wow, I had absolutely no idea Edge of Tomorrow was based off of All You Need is Kill.

I didn't have any interest in watching it, because it seemed like Battlefield Earth all over again.

Considering the reception Edge of Tomorrow got, why would you think that?

That they changed it from All You Need Is Kill in the first place is insane.

C'mon Disney... buy these fools out... show 'em how the mouse gets shit done.

FYI you were wrong on absolutely every level. There's nothing wrong with admitting that here either. :)

Absolutely.. the public has never been able to handle bizarre titles before.. I mean movies like

The Shawshank Redemption
Inception
Citizen Kane
Reservoir Dogs
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Inglourious Basterds
Good Will Hunting

oh wait...

the marketing failed at multiple levels, the generic name was just one of them. That being said, having a "nonsense" name as you put it at least would have been better (if only very slightly) than having the generic name it had.

The biggest problem with the marketing was that there was practically no build up to the movie whatsoever, what build up was there made it look like an ultra-generic sci-fi action movie (with the guy who's last movie was a relatively generic sci-fi action movie), and the only time the marketing actually revealed that there might be something more to the movie was immediately before and shortly after release. Warner just dropped the ball at every step of the way.

1) Live. Die. Repeat.
2) All you Need is Kill
3) Edge of Tomorrow
4) Live. Die. Repeat : Edge of Tomorrow

I like how buggy the engrish sound in "All you Need is Kill".

Considering the reception Edge of Tomorrow got, why would you think that?

What was the reception? I didn't read reviews, and people I know personally didn't like it. From what I heard, it was just an exceptionally vanilla scifi action flick.

I assumed it would have major scientologist themes, but now I'm wondering if that might not be the case.

I'll try to check the movie out, then. If it's ever available for Comcast On Demand I'll be sure to rent it.

Are you fucking serious? It has 90 on Tomatoes and everyone is saying how good it is. I can't wait to watch it.

All You Need is Kill sounds like Engrish nonsense.

To me it sounds like a kind of uninspired takeoff on "All You Need Is Love" (which it may be.) Either way it's not a great title, although it does give a bit more of a suggestion to content than "Edge of Tomorrow", which sounds like generic sci-fi action.

This is even worse because not everyone will be aware of the name change

If someone who saw it in theatres then wante to buy it on DVD later...

If it helps people buy the movie, I'm ok with it. Not sure it will though, and I get the feeling they could have come up with something better.

The movie didn't have enough marketing. It wasn't a bad title. And it wasn't a bad trailer. It's just not enough people heard about it. I saw trailers for fucking Maleficent for months. I only saw the trailer for EoT once...on youtube.

But, what's done is done. What's the point of arguing. The movie itself is fantastic. One of the best blockbusters of the year...in a year with a half dozen amazing blockbusters.
