Was 2009 finally "The year of the PS3?"

Demon Souls is the only reason why PS3 has any chances this year. Though not in europe.

And 360 wins by a margin because of Milfonetta :[

Ok, I'm being rude.
Please elaborate?
With games titles... US/EUR market?

Well, the new PSP releases from all regions I bought this year and loved are:

iMAS
Patapon 2
Resistance Retribution
Phantasy Star Portable
Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3
Project Diva
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Soul Calibur
Motorstorm
Tenchu 3 Portable
Gran Turismo
Kenka Bancho
Little Big Planet

and there's a few more to come out this month in Japan too. Pretty solid lineup IMO with a wide range of genres, even if a lot of them are ports of older games or established PS3 series.

Every year its gonna be "Year of the PS3" no matter what. Meme or not. Whether its due to price drop/exclusives. Also the "next year its gonna be a closer race" is a meme too. PS3 will never catch up to the 360 and the gap will always be there. EVery year its the same BS..."PS3 to beat 360 this year??" answer is no.

I entered, by mistake, in a NPD thread?

If you're talking about US, agreed, but worldwide PS3 is going to catch 360 (except if Natal gets a wii-like success).

Boom?

overall I think it has been a great year for PS3, but I don't think 2009 is being the Year of PS3

It's PS3 best year.

this, but I would say if you take a look back at what Sony has been doing before it was easy to accomplish

my little brother is moving back in with me and has a ps3, effectively removing the need for me to actually buy one.

so yes, definitely!!!!!!!!!

2009 was most definitely a very important year for the PS3.

Going towards sales: purely on a world-wide basis, this year belongs to the Wii again. If we look at things regionally:

In Japan the sales numbers between PS3 and Wii are incredibly close, and the release of FFXIII on the 17th will keep the race close to the very end. Should Final Fantasy be able to overcome Mario in December then 2009 could indeed be the year of the PS3, but I think the Wii is probably going to stay ahead - just. However, from this point on the PS3 may well start to dominate the Wii in Japan.

In Europe I have no idea - I think the PS3 beats the 360 here and that may be a permanent thing that will end up giving the PS3 a global victury over the PS3 this year, but probably not the Wii. I haven't a clue about how far the Wii and PS3 are apart either.

In the U.S., the PS3 still ends in third place, so it's hard to call 2009 the year of the PS3 in this region. Whether or not the PS3 will ever end up dominating the 360, let alone dominating the Wii, depends imho entirely on how successful the PS3 will be in reaching towards the younger demographic. Personally I thought that the 360 would take over in the U.S. and stay on top for a loooong time, and in terms of revenue this may be true for a while yet. For now though, the Wii is dominating, and after a very good 2009 and a promising 2010 up ahead the PS3 remains a strong and dangerous competitor.

A key point here that Microsoft will have to watch out for is that WiiMotion+ and the PS3 Wand share the same third party developed SDK. This will allow for third parties to develop titles for both Wii and PS3, increasing their market and decreasing platform risks (for instance competition from Nintendo property on the Wii) and R&D costs..

btw, milfonetta? :lol Personally I'd have guessed she's a virgin actually (through being an incredibly Nerdy looking type), and/or perhaps a Lesbian, being a Witch and all.

USA is not the rest of the world. Sony sells better in
Sonyland
Europe than in USA and obviously more than in Japan, even being Europe the last main market were was released and were it has the more expensive price.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

And are you sure is painful to go with Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII (Japan), Final Fantasy XIII Versus against this titles in terms of sales? I only see Halo Reach as a really big gun in terms of sales. You can add Heavy Rain or Last Guardian to compare them in terms of quality.

USA is now the only main pro-360 market. The other ones are pro-Sony. I don't know if consider UK too, because is around 20% of Europe - not PAL or EMEA- sales.

Doubt that is coming in 2010.

2009 was a good year for PS3, but it was not "PS3's year." It was more like the year PS3 started to matter. 2009 will more be remembered as the year of disappointment and status quo.

Depends what criteria you have for a year to be the "Year of the PS3".
In terms of improving fortunes, 2009 was definitely PS3's year, no contest here. Wii was way down, 360 was flat and PS3 slowly climbed back into relevance over the course of the year.

In absolute sales? No. It's not how it should be calculated seeing how rare lasting reversals are in this industry, especially this late in the game. But for some reason rabid fanboys seem to still hope for an upcoming PS3 sales domination...

Chances are 2009 is going to go down as the PS3's best year ever as this generation winds down...considering how great a reversal it was from last year, I'm fairly sure that if there was ever going to be a Year of the PS3, it was 2009 and no other.

I love PS3, but seriously, every year since 2006 has basically been dubbed the "year of the PS3". I think it's time to just let that die.

lol @ the people that can't admit PS3 outclassed 360 when it came to games this year. Next yr will be a better yr for the 360 than this one.

I played 0 games on my ps3 this year.

I play my 360 every night. (Left 4 dead and now Left 4 dead 2)

When left 4 dead is on ps3 I will gladly pick up my ps3 controller and claim the ps3 outclassed the 360. The 360 is a piece of hardware crap. I love my ps3. But zombies man. Zombies!!!! :D

It is all subjective. You want me to play my ps3 put out GT5 already.

Who cares if it is the year of the ps3. If the ps3 was dominating in sales would anyone be asking this question.

I think as it has been it is the year of the wii. This is the wii's generation. And we hope our wife and kids lets us play lol. I personally hate the wii.

I bought my 360 in March and have barely touched my PS3 since. If I had it was to play Blu-rays, PS2 games, and the occasional High Velocity Bowling with some friends.

But you only have yourself to blame for that, not the PS3s lineup.

It;ll be the year of the PS3 when I get FFXIII. I don't care if it's coming to the 360, I bought a PS3 for it and I want it.

A Playstation without an RPG isn't worth owning.

Why would you touch it if not to play games? :p You know what I meant.

For all you know there could be a million people using their PS3s everyday but completely ignoring the PS3 game lineup. After all, it only does everything.

beelzebozo said:
you could say that about any system.
Who's talking about other systems? oO

I don't think the "Year of the PS3" has anything to do with other systems. It had the best year yet so it was "The Year of the PS3". IMO anyway.

PS3 and 360 shipment numbers say you are wrong.

LOL @ the people that can`t admit McDonalds outclassed Burger King when it came to food this year.

I mean I don't think that Burger King or the Taco Bell have an exclusive lineup that can rival Big Mac, Big N Tasty, Double Quarter Pounder,
Egg McMuffin, McNuggets and Filet-O-Fish. And the really impressive thing is how many different kinds of items there are in that list.

Sorry, Sony fans, but there will never be a "Year of the PS3". There will be a "Year that is Slightly Less Shitty for the PS3", and perhaps a "Year of Hey, PS3 Did Pretty Well, All Things Considered". Unfortunately, for a piece of hardware so poorly conceived with respect to mass marketing and practicality, there will never be a year where everyone will say, "Hey, Sony REALLY showed those guys this year!"

For many reasons, it just doesn't happen with consoles in dead last. Get over it.

I don't think this thread is about sales...

In this response, Metalmurphy focuses solely and mistakenly on a sales context alone, when the problem is really greater than that. Lack of hardware sales is simply one of the systemic problems that leads to less third-party development, exclusive and otherwise. THAT is a huge problem.

Do I need to break down my statements further for you to comprehend it a bit more? I sure hope not, because it is a rather easy argument to process if you're not a supercilious twit bent on twisting every comment on the PS3's lackluster performance into one-dimensional rambling on sales alone.

Yes you do. What "less third-party development, exclusive and otherwise" are you talking about? And what about first/second party? That doesn't count?

Was a damn strong year for the PS3 for me personally. I bought a ton of games for it and even another system. All that matters really.

This is probably the very last year I buy many games though. Going to renting only because I honestly just don't like where this gaming thing is headed.

Well, you see, Sony is trailing greatly with regard to sales, mindshare and developer focus in particu--STIMULUS RESPONSE STIMULUS RESPONSE STIMULUS RESPONSE

Right, so you won't bother then. Thought so. Wouldn't matter anyway, one quick glimpse at your post history was enough to understand you. Didn't even have to get past the second page.

Define "the year of ps3"? Is it about sales? Then no, tho it seems they turned the corner in all regions in that regard. If it's about quality of games then that statement would be closer to the truth, they have the strongest lineup of the 3 this year imo.

If a year is a 12 month period why not take the last 6 month of 2009 and the first 6 of 2010. That might be one of the best 12 months periods ever on any console.

I don't really like the new IPs that Sony have been turning out in the last few years (especially for the PS3, but also in the latter days of the PS2). Too much shooting and overly 'macho' stuff that doesn't suit them IMO. This year was just more sequels in this vein. Unremarkable except in comparison to previous PS3 years, and certainly not in the same league as the PS2 in its pomp.
