Was 2009 finally "The year of the PS3?"

GAF reality would suggest that LOLZ, PS3 IS TEH DOOM3D, TEH NEXKED GAIMCYOOB! EPIC FAILZ AND LOLLERSKATEZ!

Actual reality says that despite that the PS3 will probably never get out of 3rd place though it should narrow the gap, The system has established itself in the market as a viable contender and not the laughing stock people have viewed it since E3 2006. Its now at a more affordable price point, PSN is now more competitive with live, 3rd party titles are now not suffering as bad as they once did. The PS3 is the PS3, its not the next gen GC or Turbograffix or whatever.

Right, so you won't bother then. Thought so. Wouldn't matter anyway, one quick glimpse at your post history was enough to understand you. Didn't even have to get past the second page.

Ahh, yes, the one who fails to understand a multifaceted argument that isn't detailed point by point in several paragraphs exclusively containing small words and elementary structure is the one who "understands" what's going on.

You're a fucking idiot.

From undisputed leader with PS2 to just "viable" could be interpreted as laughing stock by many.

I would say it is the Year of The Gamer. Who cares what console did better year to year. As long as quality games are released on all systems I could careless who is doing better in sales. I would say a great year for all 3 systems.

Some of these guys have to have a 'winner' to validate their purchase i agree quite frankly that you should have all three systems to enjoy what they have to offer.

Hopefully it is not as bad here as it is at N4G that place is just sad. Was the reason I tried to get an account here for so long. :lol I have never understood the war between consoles.

Maybe, but those people need to find other shit to worry about. Most systems don't survive being 3rd banana, and Sony certainly dug a deep enough hole to begin with. To me, the PS3 is doing a good job climbing out and becoming respectable. The cynic may say that the PS3 is doing better because they've just run out of things to fuck up.....which may be true to a degree.

seldom do you see people set up such a whispy, frail strawman, only to trip and fall on their own blade.

2009 wasn't really the year of any console. With the exception of the last couple of months, games this year have sucked and were all horribly over hyped. Most of the games I was looking forward to were pushed back to 2010, with only generic FPS remaining staying in 2009. Sure, there have been a small handful of gems in 2009: Assassin's Creed 2, Uncharted 2, Rune Factory Frontier, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but no console was able to rise out of the shittiness that was 2009 for gaming. If you're a console warrior on the side of the PS3, don't even bother to claim 2009 as "The Year of the PS3" as you're doing more harm than good for your cause. Now, if PS3 can come out on top in software for 2010, that will be claim worth making.

I think it was an excellent year for exclusive software on the PS3. It was also spread out pretty well. Here are the PS3 exclusives that scored 80 or higher on Metacritic:

Q1
Killzone 2 (91)
MLB 09: The Show (90)
Flower (87)

Q2
Infamous (85)
Comet Crash (82)
Zen Pinball (80)

Q3
Wipeout HD Fury (89)
Critter Crunch (87)
Shatter (86)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (83)

Q4
Uncharted 2 (96)
God of War Collection (92)
Demon's Souls (89)
PixelJunk Shooter (87)
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time (86)
Trine (83)

USA is not the rest of the world. Sony sells better in
Sonyland
Europe than in USA and obviously more than in Japan, even being Europe the last main market were was released and were it has the more expensive price.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

And are you sure is painful to go with Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII (Japan), Final Fantasy XIII Versus against this titles in terms of sales? I only see Halo Reach as a really big gun in terms of sales. You can add Heavy Rain or Last Guardian to compare them in terms of quality.

USA is now the only main pro-360 market. The other ones are pro-Sony. I don't know if consider UK too, because is around 20% of Europe - not PAL or EMEA- sales.

Wasn't Europe once considered "Segaland"? That really helped out SEGA. After all the Master System outsold the NES over there. And yes, it's obvious that the PS3 fares the best in Europe... just look at the biggest console warriors for the system here on GAF and the vast majority of them are from over the pond.

Edit: How weird would it have been during the NES/Master System era to be on some place like GAF and have console warriors telling you how great the Master System was and how it would rise up and beat the NES. Odd.

The Mega Drive also outsold the SNES here IIRC. For some reason Nintendo has apparently never been as popular here as in the US or Japan.

fake edit: Until they released the Wii, that is.

Alas, two of those games appeal to me (Flower and Uncharted 2). Also, I wouldn't have included GoW collection or Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 in that list as we've basically seen those games before (even if they are somewhat upgraded). Of course, as I possess theory of mind, I recognize that some people may regard 2009 as the best year for video games ever as the releases just happened to appeal specifically to their tastes. Unfortunately, there were few games this year that appealed to me. Could be that I'm just weird.

Yes and no. Yes because Sony released shit-ton of first party games (more than Nintendo and Microsoft) and most of them had metacritic of 90+.

No because 2010 is massive! Very massive! GT5, GOW3, Yakuza 3/4, FFXIII/Versus III, DC MMORPG, Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian, etc etc while Microsoft is solely relying on Halo: Reach (ofcourse, while ignoring the awesomeness that are Alan Wake and Splinter Cell) and Nintendo.. well... yeah...

Really? Nintendo has Metroid other M, SMG 2, possibly a new zelda, sin and punishment, Monster Hunter 3, No more Heroes DS, Epic Mickey + more. Easily the best Wii year ever.

Also, I agree 2010 looks awesome for ps3 as well, but I'm actually excited to be playing my Wii year round for once.

All that really matters to me is that Sony is starting to come through.

The bigger issue is still M$, IMO. I've barely touched the 360 since I bought it years ago. I practically buy multiplatform games for it out of pitty. Get your ass in gear, M$! Oh well, at least there are a few XBLA games to play.

Maybe if you add in a few more $ signs, They'll get their ass in gear

The Wii does have some really good title coming on next year. Can't wait to get my hands on Monster Hunters 3. PS3 does have a pretty solid line up for next year as well.

someone compile a list of 360 exclusives per quarter, that scored 80 or higher on metacritic.

then we can get to real talking.

Not smooching my posts up isn't trolling. I just honestly say what I think about everything. Naturally I'm bound to piss some console warriors off :3

Man, if in the off chance Sony DOES surpass MS sales-wise, this forum is gonna explode. If they somehow in another alternate reality surpassed Nintendo, then the Internet will meltdown. :lol

The explosion happened with $599... 99% of GAF thought the PS3 would rule this generation of consoles prior to that. If the PS3 does surpass 360, it'll happen after the next gen arrives and no one will care.

Perhaps the next "great debate" is Natal vs. whatever Sony is calling their motion controllers.

Holy shit dude, your one to talk about console warriors.

All three consoles had a good year. Wii and PS3 probably their best one in terms of software releases so far. I don't think any console had too much of an advantage over the others to declare 2009 "its year".

Also, the "Year of the PS3!" joke when shit happens to Sony is way too good to leave behind. :p

Assuming we're broadly asking: "Did you have a lot of fun with your PS3 this year?" then my answer is yes. It was my most played home console.

I played 0 games on my ps3 this year.

I play my 360 every night. (Left 4 dead and now Left 4 dead 2)

When left 4 dead is on ps3 I will gladly pick up my ps3 controller and claim the ps3 outclassed the 360. The 360 is a piece of hardware crap. I love my ps3. But zombies man. Zombies!!!! :D

It is all subjective. You want me to play my ps3 put out GT5 already.

Who cares if it is the year of the ps3. If the ps3 was dominating in sales would anyone be asking this question.

I think as it has been it is the year of the wii. This is the wii's generation. And we hope our wife and kids lets us play lol. I personally hate the wii.
Well ultimately it boils down to taste but I don't think people should front on the PS3 this yr. Had more critically praised games and exclusives than the competition this yr. Thems just the objective facts.

I'm just posting from a game standpoints and not sales. It can be the Wii yr or Wii generation all it wants, PS360 has better games. Lil Wayne can outsell Jay-Z and brag but he's not touchin' Jay when it comes to lyrics, content, substance.

PS3 and 360 shipment numbers say you are wrong.
LOL @ the people that can`t admit McDonalds outclassed Burger King when it came to food this year. I mean I don't think that Burger King or the Taco Bell have an exclusive lineup that can rival Big Mac, Big N Tasty, Double Quarter Pounder,
Egg McMuffin, McNuggets and Filet-O-Fish. And the really impressive thing is how many different kinds of items there are in that list.
:lol LOL the exclusivity of the Big Mac sauce can't be beaten.

I think in every way this year the PS3 dominated the 360 and the verdict is out whether it beat the Wii. I wouldn't be saying that last part if the Wii wasn't decreasing in sales during the last few months and I'll concede that it can pick up this Christmas.

But I also feel that MS wasn't even trying this year. Their goal is "another profitable year" and so we didn't see any big pricedrops or millions invested in ad campaigns.

They relied a lot on 3rd party games and as we saw they sold in far greater numbers on the 360 than on the PS3.

At first I thought they were just asleep at the wheel but now I'm thinking they're just trying to weather a PS3 Slim storm and will come out with a new competitive pricing scheme that will include Natal technology.

I think 2009 is the year of the PS3. It's been a while since the launch but now Kaz Hirai can finally say the PS3 is the winner. Good year for Sony.

It would have been if not for the phenomenal success of the PSP Go.

Maybe not. For me it has been the year of the PS3, it's certainly been the console I have played the most and bought the most games for.

In terms of excellent software, hell yes. But the year Sony delivers the same amount of primo shit AND outsells Microsoft is when it will truly be YEAR OF THE PS3.

2011 confirmed year of PS3? ;)

Seriously...like somebody said before me, I do not think that MS tried very hard this year. They were on cruise control mode. They know they have the support of almost all devs on the planet, they knew they have a strong brand and wide support from gamers and they were gunning for profit this year. Even next year, with a lot of really big 360 games, I expect MS to play it cool. Just let the money roll in... I think they still want to claw back a lot of money they "invested" in the XBox brand (while letting Sony bleed $$$, that is also a way to compete that MS is no stranger to). Strangely this whole HD gen (the Wii is an anomaly TBH) seems to be playing out according to some behind-the -scenes MS business plan. Secretly I think a lot of US/EU companies are supporting the 360 a lot better (and I guess that makes sense) because MS is closer to them.

nice year... the 'year of the ps3' is clowned around here so much it has lost meaning

but it was good for sony in regards to previous years

It will be 2010.
