Was it a bad idea for Sony to skip Gamescom?

No they have tgs and Paris games week coming up.
There's too many events in general to keep up with imo. That said I do enjoy having constant new news and trailers every few months.

No way. They've always spread their stuff out more than Microsoft. MS seems to basically be done for the year and PS has PSX, Paris Games Week (which is basically their gamescom this year) and Tokyo Game Show (which MS could technically attend but lol)

Also they just had a conference in China, they busy.

What I don't understand is that they decided to skip Gamescom because it was too close to E3 this year, yet they're holding a conference at Paris Games Week in October and then, presumably at some point during the first half of December, they'll be doing PSX again. That'll be even less time between those two events.

But hey, maybe they've got their reasons. Perhaps there were just too many games that weren't ready to be shown yet.

Just watch the E3 conference again, it's still magical.

Haha.

Sony is at Gamescom, they just didn't have a conference.
Also OP how does not having a Gamescom conference = very little to show when they have TGS, PGW and PSX left in this year?

I anticipate we'll be asking "was it a bad idea for Microsoft to skip Paris Games Week?" When that goes down... Or Tokyo Game Show.

This is all a result of asynchronous press conferences.

Also, Sony showed they can make megaton announcements whenever... Like SFV exclusivity in the Winter...

Nope. They already showed their Western offerings at E3 and many Eastern offerings, so that just leaves the rest of the Eastern offerings for TGS. THEN as far as boosting sales goes and throwing a few more announcement bones, they got that Experience Vegas thing in December a few weeks before Christmas.

They should had had a conference just to be competitive but PGW may be crazy. We'll know if it was a mistake then.

For me it was, while Sony did launch the big guns at E3 with their fantastic conference, it seems silly that they didn't keep the pressure up at Gamescom at the largest gaming exhibition in Europe.

While Sony will be at the Paris Games Week in October it seems weird that Sony didn't want to go to head to head with Microsoft. My guess is they played all their cards at E3 and have very little to show.

Thoughts?

Isn't Sony outselling MS 8:1 in Europe? Skipping sucks for fans/gamers, but I don't see how it's a bad idea strategically. It actually makes better sense to allocate focus on more competitive markets.

No biggie, it would have been nice to see some stuff from them though I need something to entice me into a ps4 purchase.

I don't think it matters as long as they still have a presence on the show floor. Sony has TGS, Paris Games Week, and another potential Playstation Experience coming up in the next 3-4 months for them to show stuff off at.

No, MS barely had anything new to show, Sony putting everything into E3 and giving themselves an extra few months to plan and get things ready for another conference, was a good idea.

Anyways it's not like they're currently at risk of losing the lead in Europe.

But they didn't skip it. They're there. Just no press conference. I'd love to see more from the smaller studios like previous years in a press conference but they have time to take the spotlight with Paris conference. So we'll see.

nah. Sony can do whatever and MS only had a mediocre conference that didn't show much to convince players that didn't already jump in.

Tokyo Game Show
Paris Games Week
Playstation Experience 2015

they'll be fine

This. I would rather they hold off a bit than blow their load to soon. With TGS and Paris coming up soon, and with PSX not too long after, Sony didn't even need to do Gamescom this year. They'll be fine.

I also knew a thread like this was going to pop up after MS' conference.

Not sure how MS showing games that will ship in a year plus will do anything to substantially change the sales situation. It's not like people just suddenly forget about FF7R, Shenmue, The Last Guardian, Ratchet & Clank, etc.

Mistake....

Hard to say. For gamers and news, sure. We lose out on new stuff, plus it gives MS the spotlight for the next few days.

- I honestly believe Sony had nothing and they didn't want to go there with some half ass show.

-I think they will go pretty big with TGS, trying to win back Japanese gamers while MS won't be there at all or just an extremely small presence.

-PGW will be a massive joke. They "moved" it to there, but I'll be surprised if anything even gets streamed. Probably just make some announcements here and there. Nobody will be watching PGW, so why waste announcements for there?

-I think PSX will be back, so they are saving stuff for there.

Sony literally has nothing, what would be the point? Sony obviously agrees with me. Microsoft just has way more content and Sony is dry, two different positions and two different outcomes.

Sony and dat arrogance again. Wouldn't be surprised if this sparks the change of the tides in Germany.

Sarkasmus :D Hahaha ... Oder doch nicht?

Nope, nothing will change. Great games for the Xbox but Germany is Sonyland.

I totally agree. As my idol Ricky Bobby used to say, "If you ain't first, you're last." Sony is going to regret not going to Gamescom because Microsoft is dominating gaming news right now. And that basically means that they are in first place.
