Was Jerry truly a phony?

TBS is a phony for removing Seinfeld from the 6PM slot to the 1PM slot. So TBS decided to put The Big Bang Theory at the 6PM slot now. 😥

I thought this was about the GOAT mouse Jerry but instead, it's a sitcom I never even heard of.

I'll try out some Seinfeld, if anything, I owe it to myself to see how it could possibly be so much better than Friends.

Just a note. The first season of Seinfeld is pretty bad. It gets a bit better in the second season, really starts to come together by the third. 4th and 5th are really good. Then a slow decline in 6 and 7, then the last two seasons get weird and have some good episodes and some really really bad episodes.

What's up with people and Seinfeld lately? Never heard of this thing for 20something years and then all of a sudden all these people pop up saying how it's better than Friends and stuff...

I tried to watch a few episodes and it bored me to death within 5 minutes each time, only fun part i know is George's answering machine.

I wish there was a version of Seinfeld without laugh track.

Are laugh tracks still a thing?

Christ, I hope not. I had a repeat of Everybody Loves Raymond on in the background at work one morning and the laugh track made me want to perforate my own eardrums. It was awful. Just like the Simpsons parody when Mr Burns took over TV when Homer wouldn't give Bobo back and he and Smithers made their own sitcom.

America makes some fantastic comedy, but damn does it make some stinkers that a large percent of people love for some reason.

That's because only GAF likes Seinfeld. :P

Or maybe it's an American thing, because I've never really heard people talk about it while growing up; mostly stuff like Friends, Cheers, Raymond and King of Queens over here.

Perhaps an okay thread to ask, tho very off topic. Is that new show from Mitchel and Web good? The peep show sequel?

Peep Show had a good ending and I'm weary to check it out.

I'm gunna watch some random YouTube Seinfeld when I'm off work.

I recently got to watching Mad Men and just 7 episodes to go then it is finished. Next stop was The Wire.

I feel like I've never truly understood the insult of being a phony.

It seems like there are too many types of false things that a person can say or do to label them as a phony without it being extremely vague.

Like, let's say you dress in expensive clothes and drive a fancy car but you're not really rich, just living beyond your means...that makes you a poser, or pretentious.

Let's say you pretend to be nice to a lot of people but you actually hate them...that makes you two-faced or insincere.

What's a phony? In such a way that it somehow defines the person?

So I heard a story about a vegan girl who was saving ants at a picnic. They were climbing into her bottle of water. She felt bad for the ones who drowned.

That set a new bar for being fake for me.

Holy fuck some of you have terrible taste. Seinfeld is one of the few sitcoms that has actually aged really well. It's about as close to a timeless sitcom as we have, for now at least.

Seinfeld is timeless and the best TV comedy ever made. I remember watching old shows growing up like I Love Lucy, the Honeymooners, the Adams Family, etc. They were dated as hell, but still watchable and enjoyable. Just because something is old, doesn't make it bad.

I still like early Friends. It gets annoying when Monica and Chandler get together. And then even worse when Rachel gets a kids later on.

The gay jokes in early friends make me uncomfortable now. I laughed as a teenager, and it was probably fine in the 90s, but now...eurgh.
I get the occasional chuckle, but the characters are awful. Especially the female ones. Rachel has like 2 funny lines in the entire series, and Phoebe is just silly for silly's sake.

I think my biggest issue with Friends is that I can't identify with any of the characters...but in Seinfeld, George is just so relatable.

Though it is funny how much modern technology would've solved many of the major plot points.

Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are worth nearly a billion dollars each. That’s a lot of GAF viewers.

In all honesty, I'm 30, live in a small town in Mexico and I never liked Seinfeld back in the day. The humor did not come to me, but as days went by, I watched more and more and I it actually grew on me and I think the show its fun.

The sitcom does not speak to me as much as other gaffers, but it does have its moments. I want to say it is because the show does a great representation of new york during its time (the 90s?). The mundane topics exhibited on the show are great fun and some of them actually happen to a lot of us, no matter where are you from.

And no Seinfeld was not a phony at all!!!

and just to add more to the derailed discussion my favorite sitcoms are (in no special order):

  • Friends
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • Will and Grace
  • How I met your Mother (The first 6 seasons)
