Was "the guy drives" ever even a thing?

What I mean is, the dude in a relationship drives the car no matter what. if it's her car, he still drives. If she drives and picks him up, she gets in the passenger seat and he drives to where they're going. I have a friend who's like this. It's some stupid macho thing for him. But I get a lot of dumb macho things, I mean I get where they come from at least and why they exist despite their stupidity. But I've never heard of this. My dad who was a teenager in the 60s thought it was dumb and couldn't recall it ever being commonplace. Is this just some dumb thing my friend grabbed onto out of nowhere?
 
My wife absolutely will not drive either her car or my car if I am available to drive.
 
The just sounds bizarre in modern day terms. Won't you get dinged on insurance claims if someone else not listed as a driver on the policy crashes your car?

I've never dated anyone I'd trust to safely drive my car anyway. I don't mind him driving if cargo space is necessary.
 
I always drive. And my wife always tells me I'm doing it wrong. It's just the nature of the universe.

My wife is the same. I don't think it's a power thing or a macho thing. I look at it as a courtesy. Kind of like me always taking the trash out or something. I just always drive.

My mom is the same way with my dad. She doesn't like the drive, especially on the highway. Also, male-dominated society. Men have to do everything. Drive, pay, buy flowers, do stuff for Valentine's Day.
 
It definitely is/was in the South. I remember my first job sacking groceries, I was taking this elderly woman's basket out to her car and a car passed by in which the man was the passenger. She was making some very snide comments in regards to the both of them.

Until I had my neck surgery, I would pretty much do all the driving. I don't know why, that's just the way it always ended up. Since the surgery, I have difficulty turning my head to the left, even so far as to look directly at the side mirror for an extended period. I seldom drive at all these days.
 
I tend to do the driving in town 90% of the time. I just get aggravated when she drives slow. For trips though, we'll split the driving as evenly as possible. Even then, I have to sleep while she drives or I'll get irritated at her speed.
 
Never heard of this nonsense.

My gf drives 90% of the time we are together because I drive alot more for work.

Used to be the other way around because she drove alot for work.
 
I think I am a calmer, safer driver than her, and she hates driving, so I always drive if we are together. Sometimes I make her drive just so she stays in practice since we carpool to work everyday.
 
i'm single so i don't really count, but when i was in a relationship i still had to do most of the driving. even to pick her up to visit me at my house. made no fucking sense.
 
My mom pounded this into me as a kid. The guy drives, pays, etc. After a while the girl gets fed up with this. It's nice to do initially but once you're in a real relationship, I don't see why a girl can't do any of these things.
 
Always hated this. It's the same as "only men should grill". What? Why? What does this gender-neutral activity have to do with your self-perceived masculinity?

My fiance was driving me around one day (because her car runs better and mine does not have AC in the summer or heat in the winter, if you must know). She pulls into a gas station to refuel and refresh her power steering. She gets called out by these two women in the parking lot, "Why are you doing that when you've got a man in the car?" It's her car, and she's resourceful enough to know how to maintain it. Why would that be seen as a negative quality? Why should she need me to maintain her own vehicle?

My last girlfriend was the exact same way and it drove me mad. I remember one time I hadn't slept in over 25 hours so I didn't want to drive because it's not exactly safe, next thing you know we're arguing over it.
 
really, op? you haven't heard of this? i also think it's stupid (well, not in the cases where the woman simply dislikes driving). my grandpa is a sexist (not based on this in particular) and he never lets my grandma drive. he is a crappy driver too.

my dad always drives when he's with my mom, but that is legitimately because she is an awful driver and he is scared for his life haha. i hate driving with her. she's one of those people who looks at you while they're talking and driving, rather than staring at the road while talking.

I have never in my life personally experienced this. And I've been alive for quite a while, too.

Some women just want a two way street. They want to pay or drive sometimes, why constantly force them to not pay? It makes the relationship feel like they're just being told what to do all the time.
 
I see it. It is kinda if the husband and wife are both in the car, the man drives. Like I noticed it with my family and we're all Hispanic.

Haha. Seriously? I guess I shouldn't be surprised this mentality still exists with people (referring to the women who made comments). This is something I've never really even thought about when my girlfriend has filled up her car before. She drives her car and I drive my car. Now that I think about it though, my dad has always driven when my mom and them were in the car together. I guess it's a generational thing.
 
Let me add that while I am always "required" to drive, my wife also criticizes both the way I drive and the routes I take to go anywhere.
 
I'm the primary driver unless my wife and I have gone out to dinner or something and I've had a drink or two. It's not a sexist thing, I just have a ton more hours behind the wheel than her (especially on freeways) and am much better at it so she always feels safer when I drive.

To answer the OP, yes it was (is for some people still I imagine) a thing. My grandma didn't get her license to drive until she was in her 50s when my grandpa died.

It bears mentioning that my fiance is much better at finding her way around than I am. I'm one of those dumb "I've memorized a single route to this location and it's the only route I'll ever take" guys. Sometimes having her behind the wheel is advantageous.

This, I see it as a service you are doing for your partner, I mean how old are you? after a certain age driving is just a chore, you need to go and get a bite to eat, from point A to point B.

If she wants to drive for "fun"? sure, hop in behind the wheel.
 
Hey gaf on my last date I farted on her dinner and then threw the check at her face. She got kinda mad, did I do something wrong, is this a new thing?
 
I'm not saying there's a causal relationship between not understanding why you would submit to being a chauffeur and being single, but its pretty apparent some of you aren't in long-term relationships. You have to pick your battles. Fighting over driving the car is a huge waste of time and if you think THAT kind of thing is worth arguing over, you'll just end up arguing 24 hours a day. I'll grant you that not every girl expects or even desires this, but if she does, there's no reason to not do it because its not worth it to refuse.

Yup. It's not even something we'd argue about. My gf just doesn't like driving that much, so whenever she can she sits in the passenger seat.

She won't mind driving if I'm tired/drunk/whatever though.
 
I don't mind driving. My SO doesn't like it and I feel safer taking the wheel. She'll always offer to drive on long trips or if I'm not feeling up to it.

Like the previous poster said. It's not that big of a deal.
