Was there ever an "uncut" version of FF8's Devour ability?

All the haters just don't like the shitty mechanics.

I bet you had fun spamming draw for 13 hours.

There's no question that FFVIII has huge gameplay problems.

But no, you don't have to draw a single time in the game.

I love FF8. My favorite, it was just so fun. Exploration and discovery done right. Tons of non serious stuff despite a serious story.

It's amazing how the game transitions from a normal military operation in a very grounded setting to
flying schools, sorceresses, fighting aliens in space and time travel.

but this is all AFTER Squall died while trying to assasinate the Sorceress. It is all just a dreamsequence in his last seconds he lived.

There's a lot about FFVIII that's understated and unappreciated, whether it's related to its sense of humor and wit, its music, or to its wonderful world building and sense of scale.

But my favorite part about FFVIII is that its pacing has yet to be topped by an RPG before or since.

A look at the Steam release trailer for VIII shows an action-packed RPG full of crazy moments, and the game delivers this in spades.

Final Fantasy VIII stands as the one RPG that never manages to have one dull moment. Whether it's assassinating a Sorceress, breaking out of a prison, being launched into space, being alone in an alien space ship being hunted by ferocious aliens, or carrying out mercenary missions, there's nothing boring or droll about FF8. It's high stakes all the time, and its pacing makes for a game always pushing forward in pure bombastic swagger without being a linear railroad. Say what you will about FF8, but even at its most slowest moments it still manages to carry its heart on its sleeve and tries to entertain.

passion project of a game.

Your favorite RPG wishes it had the pacing of Final Fantasy VIII. Unless it's FF8, of course, it just doesn't. It's not even fucking close.

If there were one phrase I'd use to describe FF8 it would be "so fucking cool" and I can count the RPGs I would say that about on one hand.

Can't remember how many hours I lost playing triple triad.

Gwent is the only thing that has come close since for me.

The Garden computer.

She's got a blog as soon as you get Timber Maniacs issue. They cover Laguna's travels that he wrote in Timber Maniacs.

Images like this are in her blog:

Holy shit.

I've played FF8 probably a dozen times from start to finish and never knew this existed! Welp, time to start a new playthrough.

And who's waiting on the SeeD vessel
This is interesting, because didn't they edit that specific FMV to change Squall's clothing from his regular outfit to his SeeD exam uniform? Or is that his regular costume and it's just really hard to see in the visual fuzz?

Yup it's fun noticing they didn't change Rinoa yet they changed the outfit for Squall in the scene. It's also interesting because it seems like it's also mistaking Squall as Zell when he's running.

Wonderfully said. It's a huge game that does so much right.

In an alternate universe, Selphie never existed and Rinoa was SeeD --

I remember playing that demo for the PC version. Pretty cool.

I always think back to the part after Seed graduation by the elevator. Zell is running around with his hands on his hips doing his chicken dance and Selphie's skipping around chanting "Seed! Seed!" The game wasn't afraid to take the piss out of Squall by saddling him with those two.

Oh wow. I'm gonna have to restart another playthough to see that moment and see if that's true. That's a really wild mistake of Square to not catch with their CGI house.
Yeah, I'm going to have to catch that too. Don't know when I'm going to be able to play it. I'm still on my playthrough of IX that I started back in April and then with the 4 Job Fiesta coming up I'll be playing V next.

This point is quite early in the game.

I think I have like 3 save states just before the Dollet sequence for some reason lmao.

I remember when this game came out and so many people didn't realize the character connections in the game. By that I mean Laguna originally has a crush on Julia the pianist and then eventually ends up with Raine who gives birth to Squall. And that Julia eventually met general caraway and they had a baby which was Rinoa. I was just shocked that I read online so many people saying they didn't catch that.

I always thought it was a nice touch to have Laguna and Julia's not-meant-to-be love continued through their children.

Also one of my fave things to do in this game is to abuse the shit out of the mechanics. Getting lionheart in disk one, pimping all my stats while keeping my level as low as possible, etc...

Replayed FFVIII a few years ago on my Vita and managed to do everything that I didn't do when I originally played on the PS1 back in the day, when I was much younger. Now I had collected all the GF's and trained to Level 100, got everyone maximum level and stats and perhaps my favourite part;

I never even attempted to fight Omega Weapon back in the day.

I would gladly rebuy FFVIII on PS4 if they did a port on PS4 and it had trophies and perhaps x4 resolution or whatever necessary for a PS1 Classics or if it's a port of the PC version.

I won't be surprised if it's a port of the PC version. Then Pocketstation could be a separate app in PS4 or (highly doubt they'll do this) have a Vita/Mobile remote play app that lets them use Pocketstation for FFVIII.

The Rinoa one is a lot more obvious based on what they tell up front about it. That sequence is mandatory in Deling city. Sounds like it should be a Chinese kind of city but it is very Parisian lmao.

The Squall one is more hinted rather than outright stated iirc, unless it was done outright stated in an obscure side content piece.

And yes... pimping stats is the best ^^

Did they really not have Selphie in the game until after the demo? That seems like a ton of work to do at the last minute. I don't remember the history on this.

I'm thinking that they either wanted to showcase Rinoa since she's the main female character or aspects of Selphie were unfinished so they used a character more complete in Rinoa.

It's not outright stated as far as I know but when you look at the hints given to you it's easy to put it together in your head:

- Laguna has Squall's card. With the exception of the Card Queen cards all Character cards are owned by people close to them... except Quistis' card which is owned by her fanclub.
- Kiros knows Squall's parents whereas Ward only knows Squall's father (Ward isn't in the Winhill flashback)
- When you speak to Laguna on the Ragnarok in disc 3 he tells Squall that he has something that he wants to tell him. I like to think that Ellone told Laguna about that when they were both in space.
- Raine, Laguna and Squall all have water themed names. Highly doubt that's a coincidence.

I wake up and this turns into an FFVIII love thread, and a few people have actually been convinced to play the game... Wow!

God, what an amazing thread this is. The memories... GAH! I really want to replay the game so badly now.
