Was there ever an "uncut" version of FF8's Devour ability?

There's a porn mag in Zell's house:
there's no reason to think that one was porn.. and I don't know why the english translation put NOT all in caps lol, the english version of the game has so many weird things =/

The 'porn' magazine was called 'Girl next door'. In spanish it was called 'Mil novias' that would mean 'One thousand brides' tho.

also there was an unnamed naughty magazine where Rinoa and Squall have their night talk on FH

I can't in a sober state calling FFVIII a great game, because from an objective point of view, it really does suffer from various major issues like some shoddy writing, especially in the latter parts and mechanically broken gameplay mechanics like Junction or troublesome/limiting drawing system. Even then, I still think of FFVIII fondly just like I did with Chrono Cross (another game that has issues, but I loved nonetheless), I'm glad for its existence and it's part of the reason why I'm a fan of Final Fantasy series and its willingness to experiment and shake things up from one entry to another.

That particular thing isn't weird. "Hey it's this thing....NOT" is a pretty common phrase in English. It's just a more playful version of "Hey it's this thing....not" which portends more a feeling of sadness or tiredness that you didn't get the thing.

As far as which magazines are porn, it's pretty simple:

Weapons Monthly: Not porn

Timber Maniacs: Porn
Girl Next Door: Porn
"Combat" King: Porn
Occult Fan: Porn
Pet Pals: DEFINITELY Porn

VIII is my favorite FF, but it's also the one FF I wouldn't want a sequel to.

The ending was perfect to me and I like to imagine the characters going on and just leading normal lives. The events of VIII would truly be their 'final fantasy'; something for those characters to always remember & allow themselves to stay close as they grow old.

FFV, VI, VII, and Tactics have equally mechanically broken gameplay if you know what to do. In fact, Tactics is far more broken than FFVIII ever hoped to be. Ever heard of the JP trick? You can grind to level 30 at the beginning of FFT and wreck shit. Ever heard of TG Cid? FF6 is broke as fuck and you don't even have to go out of the way to break it. Auto crossbow and you're good. FFVII has shoddy writing too, not to mention that translation. I wonder how much of FFVIII writing issues are down to a bad translation? Pretty likely. Can't wait to find out when I play it in Japanese next year.

I've always liked how all the flaws people say FFVIII has are just as prevalent in previous FF's. Like, in no reasonable measure would someone call FFVI not broken. Final Fantasy VI. The game that lets you do this somehow isn't broken. lol.

Playing Final Fantasy for mechanics or depth is silly.

Give us a prequel. :(

How far into the future is Ultimecia's time by the way? Is it within the cast's lifetime? Could Squall have met future Squall if it wasn't for those stupid barriers around the cities?

I can't begin to explain my love of Final Fantasy VIII, to me it was the most incredible journey and there's just a special something that always resonated with me about this game. Also the greatest video game OST ever made.

Check these two FFVIII medleys out if you enjoy Uematsu's work.

edit: prepare for the feels if you watch those videos.

edit 2: watched, got the feels. God damnit at 17:26 when Squall starts carrying Rinoa across the bridge, it always make me tear up.

It's the FF most attuned for a sequel though. Being that the gang are SEEDs and mercenaries for hire, they could come up with anything. Dollet mission for instance? Or the Timber Owl mission? None of these missions have anything to do with witches (at first). FF8 sequel could easily do that. It could also have a sequel featuring Laguna and his team too. FFVIII is ripe!

I'm totally down with this.

I imagine it's far into the future. Doesn't Ultimecia say something like "kurse alle SeeDs, swarming across generations like lokusts", which implies there's at least some generations between her time and Squall's time.

I'm totally down with this.

Imagine an FFVIII sequel starring a new cast. You enter Garden at a young child and it becomes some Dragon Quest V coming of age story where you become a Seed. The original FFVIII cast are in leadership positions and you also see them grow old and continue to grow while having a new generation of Seeds take care of business.

I want it. I crave it. SE please. :(

Generations down the line I think, Squall mentions it when you get to the castle and see the bodies of the SeeD soldiers.

That sounds like it'd be perfect for a strategy game which I can only picture as turn based. Kind of like X-Com meets FFVIII. Which I didn't know I wanted until now. There's a lot of lore they could use to build up on it mentioned in the Information section of the menu, a precursor to XIII's datalog only it adds to the story rather than is a necessary part of it. I'm pretty sure that magic having limited amounts is both plot relevant as well as a gameplay choice due to it being para-magic. There's your weaponry and skills.

But really though, if there was a sequel there's only one route they would take, the FFXIII-2 route. The fal'cie were god-like creatures, but they still had rules and limits, that's the entire point of the game. But then you shoehorn said gods into the plot and it just gets weird and rubbish. In XIII-2 it was all about Etro (Who by all rights is the absolute worst goddess ever), and in LR it was about Bhunivelze. VIII-2 will be that we've killed the big bad sorceress, the next step is obviously going to be to murder The Great Hyne because reasons.

Oh man, The Great Hyne subplot. I totally forgot about that. Its why I love the game, theres so many little details you can miss that are integral to the world building.

If you pay attention to the way sorceress powers are supposed to work and who got them in combination with time travel it turns out it's not possible, though.
Yup. The theory is an extremely poor and horribly thought out one. I don't understand why people want it to be true when it takes so much spinning and ignoring canon to make it even a possibility.

Extremely far. It's clearly shown that Ultimecia is not of their time so the only way to get to her is lure her out.

This game is so dense and I really dig how they switch around NPCs sometimes in areas. It gave the world an organic feeling compared to the more static placement in other games. Always exciting to see the card player dressed in yellow show up near the Garden gate, as his card selection was amazing. But one NPC that had eluded me for years was this guy...

When playing through my seventh or so playthrough of the game recently I happened upon this strange scene in Balamb Garden. An NPC classmate asked me to see my gunblade and I did, and all of sudden this strange man shows up and deducts my SeeD level by 1. Apparently he has several scenes in the game and is a notoriously strict instructor. Even though it didn't earn me anything I was astounded to find this NPC's existence in a game I had played for hundreds of hours over the years.

Another thing I dig about FF VIII is how they spent time to create unique battle background graphics for almost every screen you visit. I don't specifics to post but I was surprised how many throwaway screens you only visit for a moment are depicted with unique graphics.

Makes me so happy seeing a thread like this, FF8 got bashed alot when it came out, but I always loved it, and just 'got it'. Things like Laguna being Squall's dad or other cool stuff which I cant just remember at the moment but is mentioned already above.

I do admit the game does focus on Squall's story and not much on the characters. But I think the story is far stronger for it.

I think people coming off FF7 just wanted a sequel to it and were disappointed FF8 was not that.

I am much fonder of FF8 as whole game then FF9 (I think FF9 story theme is better though).

I played this game a ton wandering to that sublime soundtrack.

There's a lot about FFVIII that's understated and unappreciated, whether it's related to its sense of humor and wit, its music, or to its wonderful world building and sense of scale.

But my favorite part about FFVIII is that its pacing has yet to be topped by an RPG before or since.

A look at the Steam release trailer for VIII shows an action-packed RPG full of crazy moments, and the game delivers this in spades.

Final Fantasy VIII stands as the one RPG that never manages to have one dull moment. Whether it's assassinating a Sorceress, breaking out of a prison, being launched into space, being alone in an alien space ship being hunted by ferocious aliens, or carrying out mercenary missions, there's nothing boring or droll about FF8. It's high stakes all the time, and its pacing makes for a game always pushing forward in pure bombastic swagger without being a linear railroad. Say what you will about FF8, but even at its most slowest moments it still manages to carry its heart on its sleeve and tries to entertain.

Final Fantasy VIII is a leg cramping...

passion project of a game.

Your favorite RPG wishes it had the pacing of Final Fantasy VIII. Unless it's FF8, of course, it just doesn't. It's not even fucking close.

If there were one phrase I'd use to describe FF8 it would be "so fucking cool" and I can count the RPGs I would say that about on one hand.

This is 100% pure unaltered truth.

I played this at a perfect age. So many good memories. Junction system is the best ever, GF:'s were epic, so many secrets, the best FF OST.

Need to replay soon again. I used to replay FF VI-IX games every year when I was younger.

Quistis is one of my favorite characters of all time. :)
I generally give FF games a pass for less believable things in their stories, but for some reason an 18 year old military academy instructor that looks like a runway model struck me as the number one barrier in my suspension of disbelief in the entire Final Fantasy series.

I need to stop visiting this thread. It keeps making me want to replay 8 when I have neaely the entire series to play.

And now you guys are making me want a sequel? I need to stop.

Most of the characters were just Squalls teenage sexual fantasies manifest to life.

I collected all the cards on the first playthrough, and used them to beat the Omega Weapon. Can't remember what I exactly used, as it's been 17 years.

You can refine Gilgamesh card for 10 holy wars which makes everyone in your party invincible for a short period of time in battle. You can then use aura on squall & just bombard omega weapon w/ renzokuken to easily defeat him.

No fucking way.

This thread makes me miss this game and also reminds me that I never finished it. I played it +250 hours only to have my free memory card from a magazine to corrupt before the final boss. Yes, BEFORE THE FINAL FUCKING BOSS. I never went back after that. But it still remains my favorite FF today.

Some might think I'm an idiot for it, but I love the shit out of FFVIII and exactly 10 years after its release I got a tattoo of the SEED logo because it wouldn't leave my mind. Still love that game and tat.

I...

I love FFVIII, it's my favourite and I replay it every so often

but I had no idea this was a thing...

I need to look into this next time I play.

edit: I also had no idea about the Rinoa stuff above

No fucking way.

Seeing as it took around 600 hours for me to accidently meet the guy makes me think it's one of FF VIII's bigger secrets. I thought I knew everything about this game lol.

Another one that surprised me recently was getting a Krysta card from a Buel (or something) in the Fire Cavern. I had no idea that very rarely you could get a rare card through carding normal enemies.

Me myself would get the Griever. But I'm so cautious with tattoos that I never get any done, gaming related or otherwise. I'm too worried I'll regret it when I'm LVL40.
