Was this a year of disappointing AAA titles?

For me it was, there just isn't really anything for me this year. I got Fallout 4 but it just doesn't feel as much fun as the last games.

As dev budgets continue to rise for AAA+ titles, the gameplay will be increasingly adjusted towards a mass/casual market. It's your own hype/expectations of these games that cause disappointment.

Has had its ups and downs, overall I feel like it has been better than 2014. I dont think it compares to 2007/2011 of last gen tho.

It's been a great year for me but yeah some of those you mentioned were real disappointments to me too. MGSV is the most tragic one. Great gameplay and controls but it is such an epic disappointment. It wouldn't be such a big disappointment if my expectations weren't through the roof for it though. It fucking pains me to think that this is the last real mgs game. Like, I would like to think in the lines of "well damn that was bad but Kojima will get it next time!". The finality of the situation makes it worse. Good gameplay alone is nothing to me in an MGS game, I need all the basic MGS storytelling and characterization, codec calls, you name it. But no it's not a bad game.

Motherfucking Bloodborne alone made this year a non-disappointment. Witcher 3 was just epic as well. Now I'm loving Fallout 4 a lot more than I thought I would. Roll on 2016 and please don't be full of delays and we should have a pretty epic 2016.

So there were only four AAA titles this year?

People have mentioned more titles, it's just that Bloodborne, The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3 are the cream of the crop for most people and the titles that received rapturous critical acclaim.

Just like Hollywood, there will be lots of by the numbers blockbusters every year, but when a few modern classics arrive you do take notice.

If you're just talking numbers, every year will be disappointing as there will always be more so so games than true masterpieces.

-Halo 5
-Tomb Raider
-Mortal Kombat X (some may say this isn't AAA, but it is to me damn it)
-Batman Arkham Knights
-Star Wars Battlefront

come on, really solid games this year.

Every game had its disappointing moments. The fun is almost always in the anticipation now. Having said that, Bloodborne delivered and it is my GOTY. It'll also have the first DLC I've ever purchased.

Have several major releases disappointed in some meaningful ways? Yes. But overall I can't help but view this year as one of the best in a while.

No way this year was a disappointing. MGSV is fantastic game and only disappointing thing about is the microtransactions. Then we got Bloodborne which has high chances to be my favorite game of all time.

Some people seem to be disappointed in BB because it wasn't more Dark Souls which is bit weird IMO.

Given the circumstances with its development and the cut content, I'm not all too disappointed with MGSV as it is. But I do think this year was disappointing for HYPED UP Triple-A games. I've personally enjoyed the AAA-Nintendo output this year, even if they were hyped up by their standards, they certainly weren't marketed as heavy as some of the titles this year.

Am I not allowed to think MGS5 was a blast...?

This is how I feel everytime I read a MGSV thread on neogaf. Sorry that this is my first MGS, sorry that it is my GOTY even beating out Bloodbourne.

I would say that this is one of the best years of gaming ever.

but fallout 4 is mediocre

Awesome year! Fallout is immense on my pc. Halo 5 is amazing on my xbox one. Bloodborne was amazing on my Ps4. Mgs I havnt had chance to really get into yet.

Getting tomb raider this week. Hear its incredible, can't forget witcher on pc either. Yeh. Best year this gen by a country mile

I think it has been a pretty great year. The Witcher 3 alone is enough to make this a memorable year for me, but Bloodborne, Halo 5 and MGSV were all fantastic too.

This year has been the best year in recent memory. I don't think I have had this much fun since 2011. I'm going to chalk it up as a win and I love MGS5, it's my goty qnd generation so far.

MGSV
Fallout 4
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi's Wooly World
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Destiny: TTK
Bloodborne
ect

So many fantastic AAA games released this year, how could it have been a disappointing year?

Even if you think the story in MGSV and Fallout 4 is bland (which I do not agree with), the gameplay of those 2 is phenomenal, and there are many other games released this year for you.

Every AAA game had problems, just because witcher 3 and Bloodborne wasn't brought up in the OP doesn't mean they didn't have combat issues (Witcher) and loading time (Bloodborne) etc

The point is despite all those problems it's been a good year for AAA games, and that's why this year's GOTY award we finally got a real match.

I know Fallout 4 at least met my expectations, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I think as long as you aren't one to let your hype get out of control, this year was generally a success for AAA games (aside from crippling technical issues like Arkham Knight had).

Um not at all?

Just off the top of my head I've immensely enjoyed

Bloodborne
Witcher 3
COD Black Ops 3
Fallout 4
Batman Arkham Knight
Mortal Kombat X
Dying Light
Etc.

2015 has been dope bruh

Basically this (minus Bloodbourne, Witcher 3 and MKX, still to play those. I'd add Destiny: TTK to it too. I know it's just an expansion, but it pretty much fixed the majority of Destiny's issues, gave us a story better and longer than the original one and made the game more fun.

I'd call MGS a minor disappointment, mainly due to the poor story /cutscenes and somewhat average level designs. But it does offer some of the best gameplay ever. And coming from fallout 4, I really do appreciate the efforts they put into that result in the game's solid performances on all platforms.

Fallout 4 on the other hand is a huge letdown. The poor dialogs, the plain story(without memorable side quests), the terrible NPC AI, and most of all, the annoying game break bugs that made me replay same quests for hours! I have lost all my trusts for Bethesda and will not buy another game from them(not counting Tango Games) again unless dramatic changes happen.

Have only played few hours of Witcher 3 so will not comment on it. But so far the only AAA games that meet my expectations are Rise of the Tomb Raider and Bloodborne. Bloodborne in particular exceeds all my expectations(It also helps that I'm new to Souls games, so everything feels so refreshing to me).

No moreso than every other year. Though without Bloodborne this would have been an especially disappointing year for AAA (Like last year without Bayonetta 2). Witcher 3 and Batman genuinely shocked me with how little I ended up liking them in all honesty.

Been a great year for low-mid tier gaming though at least.

There have been some disappointments for me (The Order 1886, MGS V...) But by en large I think it was a great year:

Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Until Dawn Battlefront...

And of course my Goty, Bloodborne.

Now hoping that Just Cause 3 won't disappoint.

No way!

I don't play many games due to time constraints, but the last quarter of this year has seen Mad Max, MGS, Forza 6, Womb Raider, Just Cause 3, Fallout 4, NFS.

It's really about having all the time to play them: In the words of Nien Numb: 'There's too many of them!'

When was the last time AAA wasn't disappointing with only some positive exceptions? Probably before PS360 even.
Bloodborne was amazing, but after that low budget productions like Transformers, Shovelknight and Resident Evil Revelations 2 were easily my best gaming this year.

Jesus, no; this year has been one of the best in a LONG time.

While some of the games mentioned have issues, they're still fantastic experiences.

Bloodborne and Fallout 4 alone are enough to make 2015 one of the best years in recent memory in regards to game releases.

It was a great year. Some games might have not delivered to a certain niche of their fanbase but werent disappointments overall.

I feel I havent played so many games end to end in a long while. Probably because all those games take such a long time to finish.
So money over value wise this has been fantastic.

Don't forget to add Bombborne to the list. If MGSV wasn't such a let down Bloodborne would have been my most disappointing game of the year. The DLC is finally coming out to make up for the games lack of content and hopefully a rebalancing of the gameplay.

Bloodborne had a lack of content What?

Feels more like an opinion thread rather than actual facts. Case is, all those games have sold or will sell well and critically they have reviewed good.

Plus you missed out loads of other AAA games.

Splatoon was fun as hell, and Yoshi's Woolly World was an incredible fun romp with a friend. Bloodborne's upcoming expansion looks pretty wicked, and it adds on top of an already fantastic game.

Quite the contrary, I think that 2015 has been one of the better years for AAA releases.

The Witcher 3
Fallout 4
MGSV
Until Dawn
Batman: Arkham Knight
AC:Syndicate
Dying Light
Mortal Kombat X
Bloodborne

I enjoyed all of these games a great deal and those are just off the top of my head.

Nah,actually it was one of the best years ever imo
Plus the announcements for upcoming games like REmake 2,shenmue 3,FF7 remake,we've got more FF15 footage than we ever had in the past 9 years and finally some fucking P5 gameplay crowned 2015 as the best thing ever.

MGS V , Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3d, and now Battlefront.

I can't remember a year in gaming that I've enjoyed more than this one.

I don't understand the complaints about Fallout 4's dialogue system. The quality of a game's dialogue is surely only as the good as the writing and story in general, which was definitely improved over Fallout 3. The story being better is my personal opinion, but I've noticed it shared even amongst FO4's detractors.

People are making a big deal over the paraphrasing of dialogue options, but anyone who's played the game knows these are done quite well and no valuable information is lost in these summations (of which there are almost always 4, more than Fallout 3 usually had). On the surface it might seem needlessly shallow, but imagine hearing your character read out the exact same thing you've just read over and over again. It would just get irritating, and force the writers to simplify every spoken response to fit inside the dialogue box.

MGSV, Witcher 3 and FO4 are absolutely outstanding. Each has its flaws, but by god: if you consider any of them bad then your standards are fucked.

Been an amazing year and I'm sure the GOTY thread is going to be hell.

Bloodborne and Until Dawn were great.
Arkham was great till the ending...
MKX is fantastic minus the fact that all the women got breast reductions (I enjoy consistency not so much fan service).
And supposedly Black Ops 3 and the new AC Syndicate is one of the best yet.

I loved the Order 1886 and Galahad is my fave character of the year.

I think there is something to be said that some of peoples favorite games are non-AAA productions. I wouldn't call them indie, but its almost like we've seen the return of AA gaming that we had a decade ago.

Also I'm not sure Bloodborne constitutes AAA gaming, budget wise it sure as hell isn't

As far as AAA gaming goes then I would say its been a great year but not a vintage year.

The Witcher
Batman
Halo 5
Forza 6
Tomb Raider

and the games I haven't played but heard great things about like

MGS V
Fallout
Until Dawn
Bloodborne

And some cracking AA titles like

Rare Replay
Gears UE
Uncharted Collection
Ori
Soma
State of Decay
Rocket League
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi

2015 has been great. 2016 is going to be out of this world!
