Was TWINE the most misunderstood Bond movie?

Maybe disappointing is a better word....or a big missed opportunity. I just feel that underneath all the bad things there's a really great Bond film, and had the potential to be one of the best.

The ironic thing is that it had so many great things going for it at first glance. A killer opening sequence. A great villain(s). A superb cast (well except maybe for Denise Richards). And a story that had enough twists and surprises to rank among the best. Not to mention great locations, cinematography, and probably the best performance by Brosnan among his 4 007 movies. Sadly it was all weighed down by really dull, uninspired, overlong, and sometimes ridiculous action sequences. I think with a different director, one that was more experienced shooting action scenes, this could have been one of the best Bond movies.

But on reflection despite its flaws I think it's definitely the 2nd best Brosnan Bond.

3rd best. It has some strong elements but it's a bit of a tonal mishmash and the sillier bits were starting to get a little out of hand.

Really? I assume you would rank TND over it? I used to love TND (the David Arnold soundtrack is legendary), but these days I feel that it's a bit too embarrassing and silly.

It was a solid shooter on N64 for me.

I absolutely adore TND. Top 5 Bond film for me. It has the right amount of silliness while still touching on some of the the more serious elements the films dropped. I love the opening action sequence, and Brosnan is just having so much fun with the role. Pryce was a treasure as always and Yeoh makes everything better.

I think it's completely unremarkable and forgettable.

I think that's the problem with the Brosnan movies, other than Goldeneye, you probably can't remember their names, much less the plot or people in them.

Same as DiscoJer DiscoJer . Outside of the Martin Campbell directed movies (Goldeneye, Casino Royale), and Skyfall a bit, where I recall them fondly, the whole modern era is just a blur for me.

For the Craig movies, I know it’s because they’re bad. Really bad. I don’t know if the Brosnan movies are the same, but I have the impression of them being... sufficient. Not really excellent.

Maybe that’d be a fun rewatch. If I do, I hope I enjoy it as much as you, OP.

It was OK. Certainly not the worst Bond movie.

I liked that M was significantly involved in the story. IIRC it's the first Bond movie to do so.

I do have fond memories of TWINE, and while Denise Richards was definitely not believable as a nuclear scientist, she was still drop dead gorgeous so I'm willing to be a bit lenient (plus they had her in an underwater scene--a great, if low-hanging fruit, move by the producers).

Marceau is Marceau, and the parts with Desmond Llewelyn as Q are quite touching when you consider his passing around the time.

I'd consider it a bit sillier than TND, though, so I would agree with kunonabi kunonabi that it's the 3rd best Brosnan Bond. Let's not talk about Die Another Day.

Yeah that last part was a good new twist that opened up possibilities like Skyfall. Sure, she kinda feels like a damsel in distress, but she was resourceful enough to use what Electra dropped to signal Bond. Plus, they added a bit of dimension by having Robert King be a friend of M--a step away from M being just "the person that orders 007 to do shit."
