Washington Post accidentally leaks TSA master luggage keys

how bout, no one gets to open my luggage? Hmmm

Sure, just don't fly.

I'm sorry, at your house, you have a reasonable expectation that the government won't look through your stuff. On a flight with 100 other people? Um, no. It's ludicrous to think your stuff should be exempt from inspection.

Well fly but don't bring no suitcases or shit with you, buy everything at your destination. Which can be expensive, and flag you for you for some real shit.

I don't even bother with luggage locks. What's the point. If someone wants access that bad, they'll get it if I'm not physically carrying it myself.

Either by stealing the luggage which is meant to be portable and easy to carry or just by using a standard house tool to cut the lock.

This could be in the plot of a shitty heist movie.

So many employees have access to the master keys, I'd imagine unauthorized copies already exist in the wild. But really, thieves outside the TSA would rather just steal the luggage rather than fiddle with the lock on-site.

couldn't a capable locksmith just buy a TSA lock and make a key anyway?

I believe it would only result in a key that works for that lock's unique pin configuration.

How is this even possible? There are security cameras everywhere.

Pretty easily. Because anything missing won't be noticed until that person gets home which could be hours later, or even a day or more if they are in between planes. By then no one is going to go back and scrutinize footage of the luggage pickup over a $300 camera or ipad, and it will be written off instead. Now if you did it daily that's different, but if rare enough to not appear to be a pattern, I would imagine it would be impossible to identify.

The local banks here in SF won't even bother pulling security footage for thefts under $5,000. Airport police aren't going to care about a lost iPad.

To be honest, it would probably take more time to make the key than to just pop the lock with anything you have in your hand. They are... subpar.

It's funny you say that because someone already printed the keys using a 3D printer.

What a time we live in.

Even master locksmiths would take a while to recreate the keys just from a photo like that.

It would be easier to pick it for a professional.

This is basically a non-issue.

Let's talk about how useless the TSA is instead.

a kid with a 3d printer could make most of those keys and have a fairly good chance. A locksmith could do better. That key with the embossed bosses might be hard as fuck, but the standard ones? I don't see why they would present a problem

edit: beaten :P

I always carry electronics as carry on, which leads them to grab my backpack and do "additional testing" because of so much shit I have.

I use like 10+ trays and take my sweet ass time picking everything up. By the time I'm done, the drone agent is noticeably tired of waiting, so they do the test quickly.

Waste of time because it always comes up negative.

Do you take your sweet time with 10 trays when you're in the security line w/ everyone else? If so you're an ass and you're holding people up.

While it's fucked on principle anyone has to do this, I sprung for the NEXUS program. $50 for 5 years which includes Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. I'll never stand in a standard security line for as long as I can due to stuff like that. I can usually show up to the airport 30min before takeoff and make the plane just fine because of that.

Can we just roll this back one step.

The TSA allowed a reporter to photograph their secret master keys.

What in the actual shit are these people playing at?

Go ahead and steal my stuff. No point in using a lock. I have a credit card that will give me money if my luggage is stolen. Go ahead and take it.

I had a TSA lock attached to my bag when I flew home this summer. Apparently they didn't bother using the master key because I only had one zipper left on my bag, and they'd taped it up in a garbage bag. Thanks, guys. I felt so safe.

I'm saying you could grab a bag, take it to a bathroom, open it, sack it, replace it before anyone notices it's missing. You'll be on camera taking a bag away and putting it back later but that only matters if someone's looking out for you. The advantage of having a key is you can replace the lock before returning the bag. Your mark doesn't realize she's robbed until she gets home, since she believes her lock was secure and she sees it's still there. They can maybe find the tape of you grabbing the bag but then it's the next day, you're long gone, and nobody remembers you.

It's not a *good* plan but it's the only new scenario I can imagine this leak opens up.

My wife did some magic with a hairband, seemed more secure than any lock I've used. Didn't even know how to unlock it when I got to my destination.

Wait, the TSA hires incompetent employees? Somebody get the news on the phone!

If they want to look inside my luggage so badly why don't they just call out the owners and make them open it? Happened to me in Korea without a hassle.

Because security doesn't get access to it until after you've already dropped it off and headed for the plane?

They open it after you drop your bags off. They have additional scanners behind the scenes for big luggage similar to the ones for your carryons. So they look in your checked luggage while you are actually going through security or enjoying a coffee or whatnot.

uh wow that's some shit we plan on going to Disney World next year (live in the UK) and I've got a case I bought in Tokyo with a built in lock that the TSA might go ham on? looks like I'm going to have to buy a new case.

It's bad enough going to where Florida man lives but reading all the horror stories about your airports isn't great either.

Why do you need to buy new luggage? I don't follow.

Then how come they don't open everyones?

Oh right, because we have scanning machines that can xray suitcases, we have machines that can detect all kinds of bombs and powders. There is no reason to randomly open certain peoples suitcases.

How do you feel about the report that came out in June that the TSA failed a shit load of tests allowing people WITH FAKE FUCKKING BOMBS STRAPPED TO THEIR BACK THROGH SECURITY.
But no, we need to let them open a select few suitcases in the name of "security." Get real.

Is everyone forgetting that your baggage has already been x-rayed and could be opened by a four year old with craft scissors? Your privacy is gone and your security is non existent. The key is basically courtesy lube.

Anyone relying on a two gram padlock for security is not being realistic.

I don't understand what I'm looking at. Why is this printed on a pizza box? :lol

Because they that was an effective recruitment method for TSA employees. It's a job advertisement. I hadn't heard of it, but searching suggests it was actually real.
