Watch_Dogs: now with 100% less demo?

A demo goes against the game of illusion with release day review/information embargoes and zero transparency regarding a product in some slimy attempt at tricking people into day 1 sales through pre-orders and pre-order bonus'.

The PS4 doesn't even have a demo section on PSN. Sad as hell. Why did pubs have to wake up to the fact that demos are great for us, but terrible for them? God damn it.

But it does.

Releasing a demo a Sandbox game means developing a wholly separate version of the game. They would have to commit time, and staff to make it happen, and it would be based of a older version the game that finally releases - as they would have to break away from the main team before development of that game is fully finished.

Bad idea.

While I agree, I would also applaud Burnout Paradise and Just Cause 2 for managing to have demos. Both of which pretty much sold me on the games.

PSN does have demos for PS4, I bought Strider thanks to the demo. I just wish there were more. Either modify the game after release to make a small demo, or just put a time limit on it or something. Wasn't full game demos going to be a thing? Or is that just with PS Now?

I get what you're saying and I agree with you but just to be clear... you still have to do that even for a non sandbox game lol. It's still a branch off the main game, it's still dev time and QA time taken away from the main game and it'S still a shit ton of money for often not much return.

Games like these are actually hyped so much through many channels that a demo as a marketing tool isnt necessary. I remember a study posted here stating that demos dont really help raising sales.

How can an open world game have a demo, wont it be too restrictive in terms of play?

I'ts been done many times. Mafia 2 as mentioned, Just Cause 2 and GTA1/2 for example. All missions except a few will be taken out and there will probably be a 10-15 time limit, but other than that I think these are among the best demos. It really leaves you wanting more.

Why do you say that? Do we have sales figures for Titanfall? Why do you insinuate that the game did poorly?

As long as there are no official numbers and Microsoft being suddenly so silent about their gamechanger, I assume that it sells below expectations. And I think that Watchdogs wont reach numbers in AC territory.

Have you seen the UK sales numbers?

Man it would be so good if i could do the ÂŁ10 upgrade on this game like i wanted to at when it was a launch game.

(The real reason was so i could play with a few friends who still havent got round to getting a ps4 yet, but still feel the glory of current gen sparkly)

Who expected a demo for this? Ubi themselves never promised a demo, that I know for sure. Sandboxers don't demo well, Just Cause 2 is the last sandbox game demo I remember and that was just a closed off desert in the middle of nowhere.

Do a lot of next gen games have demos? Probably slightly more scared of people not giving a fuck after seeing the shiny gaphix

People really expected a demo for this?

You know, like all those demos we got for the Ass Creeds and the Far Crizzles.

Come on now.

Most (eight) of them say because they like the modern setting, and that it feels more grounded and less fantastical then Assassins does, but still more empowered then what a typical GTA provides.

And they just think the trailers look cool.

We'll see about that. The delay hurt the hype and the fact that GTA5 set the bar very high. Super exited were people for TitanFall too...

The delay definitely hurt the hype, but that was mostly because the marketing machine was already in full swing and it probably will be again very soon. And yeah, GTA5 set the bar rather high but that's some time ago now. People wants to play something else.

I would rather see post release demo's become the norm so that developers can polish their games more. I also think that if publishers forced reviewers to wait for a few days after release to begin writing their reviews the quality of those reviews would go up.

But then those reviews would be late, no one would care and you would have read all the impressions you would want from the forums.

That's reason for embargoes to begin with, to give reviewers time to actually think before they write.

Have you seen the UK sales numbers?
I did. Are you telling me that they need a month to reach a million in sales globally? Definately what Microsoft expected. Cant wait to see how many xbones they have sold too. But thats off topic, sry for this.

I'm not sure if Watchdogs has this appeal. Its a new IP so they wont hit sales like those established series's but the hype has gone down noticably.

That's true that MS has suddenly gone quiet about Titanfall after being so bullish, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's likely EA and MS are waiting for the 360 version to come out and then they'll announce 2 million sales, or something. I'm sure it will have no problem reaching very healthy numbers overall, and it will probably have a comparatively long tail.

Likelihood is that it's only done notably well in the UK and North America though. Europe doesn't care about the 'bone and China/Japan etc won't care about the console, much less a game like Titanfall.
