Watching Star Wars for the first time, where do I start?

Watch them in release order but know that the very last scene of 6 isn't going to make any damn sense to you because of certain ghostly revision.

Ok the only one that matters in the first is go to Therum first so you get Liara early. In the second you probably want to do Shadow Broker but leave it until the end or you risk losing Kelly, that minx. Bring Tali on Legion's loyalty mission and make sure you don't do anything except that mission after the IFF mission.

to be frank, it didnt make much sense to me on my first viewing of the original (pre-sequel) version on VHS either. i was like "who is that guy?" the revision will actually make more sense since he's going to actually watch the prequels

i was in my early teens though.

I find it weird people always assume he's going to hate the prequels. We've had LTTP case where people liked them more.

It's up to him to find out if they're crap or not.

I highly recommend watching 1-3 AFTER 7, please do this. You'll transition into the new story much easier and with maximum hype!

Yup, 100% this. The new trilogy wants literally nothing to do with the prequels, so everything you'll need to know comes from the original trilogy.

start with season three of breaking bad. then better call saul season 1. then season five part 2. season 1. season 4 and then finish off with season five part 1. don't bother with season 2.

I think what he got was never talk to SW fans ever.
This whole thread is a mess :P there's like four different ways that got recommended. My favourite was the one that started with VI.

O OP. If you want you could also watch the Clone Wars show & movie cartoon between I and II. Unno if others agree but I heard it's an interesting thing to do.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Messed up the order.

1 - Clone Wars(S1-6) - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6

Or:

4 - 5 - 6 - 1 - Clone Wars(S1-6) - 3

Moral of the story? Watch Clone Wars.

Pls. D:

4-1-2-5-3-6 forever

But do yourself a favor and seek out the GOUT from the DVD releases or go out and find the Harmy Despecialized Editions.

Looks like its going to 4,5,6,1,2,3,7.

Thanks

I think this is the best way to go. Watched them all for the first time this past weekend. Boyfriend said "I-III are lame and a waste of time, start at IV."

Watched IV.. and then went out to buy I-III because I had too many questions. So I watched IV, I, II, III, V, VI. (But would have gone with the suggestion above, if I had the chance)

Even though I-III are obviously terrible, the backstory is something I would say you have to go through if you are new to it.

I would say.. absolutely not. This new movie will be totally recognizable and easily followed watching 4-6 only. There will be references to the PT, but only HC fans will recognize them. You won't miss anything in relation to the main plot if you didn't see 1-3; that much is just about guaranteed.

I won't post my stupid Memento order this time, but will just say release order for the first time is probably the best way to go. You experience all the surprises, oohs, and aahs the same way most people did.

Disagree, watch them first because coming off those disappointments will likely make the new movie that much more surprising and enjoyable

Coming into the new movie with only the OT on your resume is a surefire way to be let down

More that people forget Episode II was the shitter prequel and Episode I was meh at worst.

But Machete order has nothing to do with the quality. It has to do with the fact that I is completely disconnected story-wise from the rest of the series (even the Anakin we meet is a stupid kid who does nothing to drive the story), while II introduces key characters and plot points.

That said, watch the movies in release order, OP. Yes, including I. If even just to see why everyone hates Jar Jar. If you need to trim a couple hours, definitely go Machete.

Holy shit these threads are worth it for the joke posts. Comic books stuff lol

I guess the OP has figured it out but to be clear - the same way you watch every single other film series you want to watch the entirety of. Release order. It's really that simple.

Same here. Star Wars is the only franchise I can think of where people seriously come up with arguments for consuming in anything other than release or chronological order. I'm not very familiar with the comic book scene, so I can't comment there.

What always floors me about it is the expectation that these would be the best way for someone to experience Star Wars for the first time. I have to wonder how the conversation would go if one is trying to convince a new viewer to do it that way.

"The movies weren't released in chronological order. We're going to start with Episodes 4 & 5, then move on to 2..."

"Is that the order they were released in?"

"No, but the story makes the most sense this way."

"Then why weren't they released in that order?"

"Uh..."

"And why would the story make the most sense that way?"

"Just trust me, OK."

I see someone here directed the OP to the original "Machete Order" blog post to explain why one should go in that order, which is ironic since one of the stated virtues of that order is preserving a plot twist which, along with many other plot points, is spoiled in the post itself!

To be fair to that blog post, it is directed towards people who have already seen Star Wars, and it does make a spirited argument for Machete Order. It's just that the arguments don't really hold up to scrutiny, and its reason why release order supposedly doesn't work is incredibly flimsy. It all rests on a single scene being "confusing" in newer versions. But that scene is incredibly easy to figure out from context. I'm pretty sure that I was about 10 when I first saw Return of the Jedi and
I didn't recognize that the same actor played Vader without the mask and Anakin's ghost and I still instantly figured out what was going on. I mean, who else would that be?

My favorite joke order would be:

Star Wars -> Empire Strikes Back -> Return of the Jedi up to the line "what I said was true, from a certain point of view" -> Listen to "The Saga Begins" by Weird Al -> Red Letter Media review of Attack of the Clones -> Insert your favorite fan edit of Revenge of the Sith -> Pick up where you left off in Return of the Jedi but this time watching the Family Guy parody instead

A few elements of this are gratuitous but most of it, including interrupting "Jedi" in the middle, come from serious suggestions I've seen.
