I always took this as a kind of suggestion on the part of Moore that certain human motivations are inescapable. And that the distance and perspective that supposedly comes with godlike powers is, in-part affectation. The character is a critique of the motivations and behaviors of Superman, no?
No. He's a critique of nihilism.

I just finished reading Watchmen too. I heard that the
squid
isn't in the movie or that that scene was changed. Is that true?

That's the rumor. Though it wouldn't bother me much as long as it remains
alien
in nature. If its
something man-made, like a nuclear weapon,
that would absolutely kill the ending of Watchmen IMO. It's such a brilliant mindfuck on so many levels.

the new rumoured ending is that
ozzy makes it look like Dr M setoff multiple nuclear bombs worldwide.
This is stupid because
it is not an external enough force to unite the world, plus it also gives the problem of massive worldwide nuclear fallout from all the bombs. The squid ending is the one that makes the most amount of sense, even if some clowns believe it to be retarded.

I don't see how Manhattan being made to look the bad guy would act as a unifying force across the world... I mean the guy is a US sponsored meta-human, the US public is pissed off that their government has harboured him for so long, the rest of the World stands around and says "Good going douchebags", and given that Manhattan was the US's premiere deterrent, surely with him going rogue it opens the doors for a Russian attack?

It has to be a truly external force, whether it be a giant squid or ET himself..... but not Manhattan.

In other news I started reading Watchmen again last night, for the eleventy seventy time..... I'm still finding little nuggets of information scattered through the panels. I <3 Watchmen.

This is what I always thought.

But if there's no giant alien squid, why are there any kidnapped artists and scientists on the island? And I don't get why the whole squid thing is such a hard sell. I wonder if the people saying that have ever heard of a movie called Cloverfield.

Because they're creating a Manhattan animatronic or something? I don't know.

it makes a lot more sense in the watchmen world than the current movie ending

Exactly, The Black Freighter, the supplementary material, the missing writers and scientists, the Center for Interspatial Studies making announcements that they are closing in on other dimensions, The Comedian at Moloch's apartment.

Does anyone else think that the explosion in New York we've seen in a few of the trailers (its at 1:00 in the 'Heroes Never Die' trailer) looks suspiciously blue, as well as looking very similar to the shockwave Manhattan gives off when he is trying to rebuild himself.... It might end up being the worst heel turn since The Rock became the corporate champion. Maybe even worse!

Once again as the rumors said,
Ozy frames Manhattan for the explosion and Manhattan gladly takes the bait for he knows it'll prevent a full-scale war.

To answer the other question on why Manhattan did what he did in the end of the comic and why couldn't he predict it,
well.. in Chapter 9, Laurie asks Manhattan what he sees in the near future and Manhattan said that things are vague and he can't pinpoint it since there is going to be a massive energy pulse similar to nuclear bomb which is preventing him from looking into the future. He said that millions of people will die somewhere and that he will end up killing someone but he is not sure who and not sure if it will actually take place.

Anyways, real reason for the bump is... Settlement Status Has Been Filed!!:

http://www.filmesq.com/2009/01/watchmen-lawsuit-pt-25-settlement.html
Reports of settlement progress in the Watchmen legal case have been confirmed by a new January 14, 2009 court filing. Both Fox and Warner Brothers filed a Notice of Settlement Status and Request for Further Hearing (see link below). According to the document, both parties apparently began talking about settlement after the December 29, 2008 status conference. Additionally, the filing says "the parties are continuing to address a few remaining settlement issues." Finally, Fox and Warner Brothers have requested a hearing on January 15, 2009 at 3:30 pm "to report on a final resolution or, alternatively, to discuss how to proceed on January 20, 2009."

Just finshed the comic for the first time. What a total trip! I wan't to see a cage match between Ozzy and Batman. I wonder who would win?

Oh that's bullshit.
How exactly would that bring the world together? It's not an external unknown threat like an alien invasion which would being all of humanity together, it's the US's trump card turning its back which would leave the US vulnerable. The Kremlin would see this as a perfect time to strike and they'd deal the finishing blow.

Bottom line: If it's not an alien attack, it won't fucking work
.

I do love watching silly purist cry because a squid is the ONLY THING THAT MAKES SENSE. :lol
It doesn't necessarily have to be a squid, but it has to be something that doesn't come from this world, and although Dr. Manhattan has crazy powers, he's still from Earth and he's on the American side.

It's not like they couldn't explain how it *could* work. I don't see why it *has* to be an alien. Just a common threat. If Manhattan went rogue, the world might unite against him. I always wondered how the ALien Squid was supposed to bring about any last effect when no followups from "Dimension X" show up.

because Dr Manhattan is a known entity and is the only thing stopping the USSR from attacking the US. If the US loses him, they're vulnerable and the USSR would attack if they weren't facing some bigger external (alien) threat.

It wouldn't matter. It'd be like trying to stop Mr. Domino.

They updated the site: http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

You can see split-seconds of new footage and hear bits of dialogue. (Like a piece of Rorschach's journal entry.)

Wow! a Much much better interface than before! I guess the music pieces playing in the back is the soundtrack...

EDIT: HOLY SHIT!! RORSCHACH's JOURNAL! The entire dialouge is there!! I was expecting them to chop it down to what we hear in the trailer but DAMN! I AM SURPRISED AND AMAZED!! :D :D :D

Btw, people who don't know jackshit about Watchmen should avoid the website. There are ALOT of subtle hints about the movie and how it unfolds especially with dialogues and scenes associated with each character they show.

If short, don't watch the videos associated with every character. Just listen to the dialogues if you are THAT curious. It'll spoil the whole movie..

Damn...even the music is great. Rorschach, Manhattan, Nite Owl, and Ozy's themes are pretty amazing.

Billy Crudup is sounding great as Manhattan now. There's this sadness and apathy in his voice that is perfect.

you're making it worse.. spoiler that shit and get rid of the quote...

plus, by just watching these videos and having no prior knowledge of the story i don't think it's enough.

Actually it is very obvious... that said, removed whatever you spoilered...

Masked vigilantes everywhere are crying in their spandex.

Kind of a bummer. It doesn't really matter to me whether they are the "Crime Busters" or the "Watchmen". Audiences without prior knowledge of the book will be all confused if there is no actual group called "Watchmen" in the film.

I snagged all the wallpapers from the new website (there are two for each character. One in their opening profile and one in the Downloads section) and I have them rotating on an hourly basis.
