Can someone exlpain to me what's so special about this movie? I'm from Europe and not familiar with the comics. When I look at the trailers, I just don't get what's there to be riled up about. Above all, this costume makes me laugh out loud:

Educate me Gaf.

Why don't you just fucking read the book? It's only 12 volumes - pretty short. I haven't read anything yet, but I'm going to borrow a friend's copy tomorrow and read it before the film comes out. I may or may not go to see the film depending on the feedback that comes in after its release, but seeing as a lot of people are discussing The Watchmen now, I figure it's as good a time as any to see what the hub bub is all about.

Because it's nigh impossible to find? The only copy I could track down was 60 euro or something, and I'm not paying that just to find out why I should or should not be excited about a movie.

I find that incredibly hard to believe. This isn't Miracleman or something.

LOL, didn't check online, just in local comicbookstores. Might order that, thanks.

Uhm, comic book stores should have it too, though. I don't see how living in Europe really has got anything to do with this (and you know, the writer is british), and personally finding Watchman in a comic store shouldn't be that hard.

Comicbookstores are pretty hard to find (there's two in The Hague, my hometown, one of the biggest cities in Holland), and they mostly carry the more popular DC, Marvel and Image-comics (and the Magic TCG). One store (or at least the guy behind the counter) never even heard of Watchmen, the other had only one copy of each issue, carefully sealed in plastic, not placed in the regular cabinets, but in the displaywindow in the counter.

You gotta understand, comics aren't a big deal in Holland. You can get your X-men, Spider-Man or even Spawn just about everywhere, but for non-mainstreamcomics you're at the mercy of these comicbookstores and with little to no competition, they can basically ask whatever they want.

It's pretty much the same here as well (I also live in EU). I ordered Watchmen from a online store here for like 20 euros, and I'm sure I could find it in a comic book store, but then it'd probably cost more. All I meant is that it's far from impossible to find it.

I know, it just never occured to me that I could probably get it from Amazon. Somehow there's still something in my head that says "Amazon = DVDs & Games for CHEAP!"

Comic books are hard to find here too (Belgium) but we have a few decent shops (in Ghent and Leuven). I found Watchmen here, which started my interest in comics. After that I realized there are a couple of excellent online shops. Most stores use the $ = € system for selling their comics, which is a bit on the expensive side. Online is a lot cheaper. This is a good site, they have Watchmen

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781852860240/Watchmen

when it comes to regular stores Europe (or at least the benelux) is a true comic ghetto, but thankfully the internet makes up for a lot!

i have a wishlist of about 30 books there, they're pretty cheap

I really wanted to see this in IMAX first. I don't want to wait a few weeks for that though. I'll have to made do with a regular screen till then.

Normally I'd want to see the IMAX version first as well, but seeing as how it's shorter than the normal theatrical cut, I'm gonna see that version first. Got tickets to see the IMAX version the following day though. :D

Eh, weren't all prints cut the same length?

Woah. Hold on. You don't read Watchmen to get excited for the movie. You read Wathmen because it's Watchmen.

IMAX version is edited? I didn't know that. I don't feel so bad now. Its been about a year since I last read Watchmen. I'm going to have to start again the the next few days so I'm all ready for the film. :D

all versions are the same

Yeah, I misread the information earlier. They cut
Hollis' death
to meet the IMAX run time limitations, and it's the same for the theatrical cut as well.

Maybe not trolling, but "prove to me why this is awesome GAF" posts are just annoying. Wikipedia that shit or read some reviews.

They streamlined the clip. Rorschach does some snooping around before he finds the costume... unless they cut that out.

:lol :lol :lol :lol

That live stream of the HOME interview. The guy got a message pop up... SUBJECT: BLUE PENIS GAY?

"The first scene is apparently heavily edited including some dialog"

but yeah. in another interview Zack Snyder said that the theatrical cut 'might' seem a bit fast paced due to the time constraints, but the directors cut is more fluid.

There is nothing to be excited about.

Find the novel, read it, love it and don't let this abortion taint your enjoyment of it.

Why would this movie taint the comic even if it did suck -- something I assume you know nothing about?
There is no IF, it's categorically impossible for this to be good. Watchmen's greatness is inherently tied to it's execution as a graphic novel. Someone's first experience with Watchmen is one of those great moments in media that engages you so much that you want to share it with others, especially the ending, the impact of which cements the novel's place in the reader's mind as something truly special even if they haven't finished digesting it's moral implications.

The fact that a whole generation will have the book spoiled for them before ever getting the chance to go through that process of discovery is a just a damn shame.
