Holy SHIT

The funny thing is that not only is the water in Wind Waker too simplistic, it's just a lazy shortcut to avoid creating land mass geometry. Lets just patch empty space in a blue hue so we can have this game released quicker.

Wow, so much nonsense in one post.
Yes, let's only create an game about pirates, oceans and sealing to avoid creating land. So ever game about those themes exist only, because the designers are to lazy to create flat land. Even more having an simplistic art style is also just laziness, everything has to be realistic or extremely detailed or they were not trying ...

Mario Sunshine water is still impressive to this day. I seem to remember some awesome gif of the river from RRD in some other thread, that was one good looking river.

I remember when HL2 used to have the best looking water

I still think HL2's water shader remains one of the nicest around. The water itself is completely static and flat, and thus looks dated in that department, but the actual reflections and refractions are excellent.

This makes Uncharted look like a PS2 game
What does the game do with the water, just allow you to swim in it? Any stormy sea physics complete with floating boats and platforms realistically waving up and down? A capsizing cruise ship in realtime? Oh, open system with tweakable mods as opposed to a closed, 6 year old system? Lmao.

The defense force has been awakened.

Add one to the Crysis camp, the water had me speechless when I first played it. But when it comes to dynamic, interactive water Cryostasis has to be one of the best.

at least that ps2 game can be playing by millions.

the butthurt is always glorious

Perhaps I should give the water effects an 8/10 in Uncharted

I appreciate how technically amazing the water is in the Crysis and Just Cause 2 gifs posted here - but to me it still looks off for some reason I can't quite explain. It doesn't look 'wet' to me, if that makes sense.

Still think it lies somewhere in the uncanny valley, whilst other less realistic looking examples like Wave Race, BG&E, Mario Sunshine seem to behave more naturally.

One of the most unconvincing examples of water effects I remember seeing in a game was in Resistance 2. It looked pretty, but it also looked very very fake. Reminded me of plotting Bessel functions back in uni.

I expect that come next gen (PC) hardware, the bleeding edge power afforded to calculate water behaviour to an even more detailed level will alleviate this problem.

I find it really hard to believe, seeing how many games with explosions that I've played since, but GTAIV rendered some amazing ones and I'd happily say that they're the best I've seen.

Wish there were better .gifs of Mario Sunshine.

I've seen those Crysis images before but not in motion.

Also, not enough Killzone 3 .gifs
