The only chance DC has of making Aquaman work is to inject it with a shit-load of humor and levity. If they try to make him as dark and gritty as they attempted to with Superman in Man of Steel, it'll be even more laughably bad than that was.

DC hasn't attempted to do anything with humor and levity in almost 20 years. Joel Schumacher and the Adam West Batman have scared them into thinking that any attempt at levity will make people think their superheros are a joke.

If its based on Johns run then I'll watch the shit out of it unless of course it ends up in Green Lantern territory.

Not really ; Geoff Johns run on Aquaman had humor and was serious and 'dark and gritty' at the same time.

If they manage to show, convincingly, how powerful Aquaman is (perhaps making him Namor-like), the audience will forget about it. Remember how ridiculous Batman was?

It will be interesting to see if the movie will stop Aquaman being the butt of the joke, because he really isn't.

But Marvel showed them that you can have humour in your Superheroes movies.

If they attempt to make it serious and gritty and "it's your DESTINY Arthur Curry" then people will just roll their eyes and go "Oh they're making him badass"

Patrice O'Neal was the only person who made me believe an Aquaman film could work.

A dude just chilling, brooding in the darkest depths of the ocean while vicious looking sea animals swim right by him is the epitome of badass.

People saying WB not putting any humor in these movies must have forgot the tornado scene in Man of Steel or Talia's death in Dark Knight Rises.

I thought Nolan's films had an appropriate amount of humor, there's having a nice chuckle here and there, and then there is

That can have it's place in Marvel films. Not all films should be tonally similar either, they should each play to their character's strengths.

Hopefully they go way out of the box with this character. Make his look inspired by strange creatures of the deep...

Make sense I suppose. Aquaman's world is aesthetically very unique in today's comicbook movie game. They will probably lean heavier on him to set themselves apart.

They cast Jason Momoa as Aquaman. They're doing "Conan the Barbarian, Only Underwater."

I wouldn't be surprised if it's either an adaptation of Johns' recent run or if they base him off the more militant Flashpoint Aquaman. There is one thing that drives me crazy in these threads, DC doesn't have their own studio and don't develop movies, it's all WB.

Either one of these sounds good to me. I hope they take heavily from Johns reboot

I know, I know
Their superhero movies

I don't know what universe would consider Catwoman and Green Lantern "grim and dark" and without humor or levity. Except, maybe a universe where "grim and dark" as a phrase has been rendered almost meaningless.

So...this universe.

I'm hoping that since they're considering two scripts, it means that they're actually looking for quality. And that if both scripts stink, they'll toss both of them out and start again.

This should be interesting. If this is getting out now then we should see this film sooner rather then later. Maybe it's the second 2016 film? Though no idea if under water effects are harder to pull of compared to other special effects. That might determine how long it takes to make I think in the end.

And he helped with Arrow, which is fucking awesome.

This is actually why I think Green Lantern didn't have to turn out as bad as it did. Arrow has been excellent for the most part. Something seriously wrong happen with that film and and as long as they recognize what happen things should be okay. Green Lantern as a film isn't all bad though. The beginning and everything on Oa is good I feel. It's when they head back to Earth and the Earth sections after the beginning is where things fall apart very quickly. That film never should have taken place on Earth once Hal got the ring.

I'm still calling Shazam for the second 2016 film. 2017 will be some combination of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Justice League, with the odd film out heading to 2018.

Warner better be careful with this. You can't make an Aquaman film in the same tone as Man of Steel or Nolan's Batman. It won't work. This is a guy who talks to fish and fights with a trident. Trying to make it dark and serious is going to ruin the film.

Wonder Woman is easier to adapt than Aquaman.

And no one suggest they should use the WW animated movie as a template because that was terrible.

I don't know. Maybe an 80s dark fantasy adventure could work.

I just wouldn't count on making a billion dollars though.

The aesthetic is the biggest thing they need to nail imo.

If it's as ugly as GL it's dead on arrival.

Batman dresses like a fucking bat with big ears, he's not above anything.

So the only way to make a Superhero film nowadays is to have some shitty humor and laughable banter that pretends to pass off as witty in the movie? fuck outta here with that noise.

why the need to homogenize everything?

What was Man of Steel, then, if not a blatant attempt to place Superman in the same stylistic, tonal, and (in Begins' case) structural template of the Nolan Bat-trilogy?

That's not bold auteurism. It's just a different sort of homogenization.

Because the alternative is:

INCEPTION HORN:

WB
DC
SYNCOPY

"Ever since you were a child, I knew you were different"

"I just want to be normal!"

"No Arthur Curry, your destiny lies somewhere...deeper"

PRODUCED BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN DIRECTOR OF THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY

"You can save them Arthur, become the link between the surface and Atlantis!"

"I can't!"

"You have too!"

WRITTEN BY DAVID GOYER WRITER OF BATMAN BEGINS

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

AQUAMAN

SUMMER 2016

"So you're a man from Atlantis huh? How about we call you...Aqua...

"Please, just Arthur is fine"

In a perfect world, Aquaman would carve out its own identity and tone rather than being beaten and homogenized to fit either the Nolan Batman or MCU templates, which fans seem to believe are the only options when creating a superhero movie.
