Wearing a band's t-shirt to their show?

Some have negative thoughts about it. I know people who say things like: "it's an unwritten law not to. they already know you're a fan." They approve of wearing a different band's shirt or a non-band shirt.

It's undeniably encouraged when we look at sporting events.

The conflicting views for concerts are interesting me.

Not sure how deep this can go as a conversation. Most people probably don't care or think about it.

Sports teams are usually playing opposing teams, thus the need to proclaim your support for one side or another. Unless you are at a battle of the bands this is not the case at concerts.

I wore my reel big fish shirt to the reel big fish show and met the band and nobody gave a shit. I really don't think it matters.

that's a good point to make when arguing against wearing a band's t-shirt to their show

I think we might find in this thread that some people don't care, some do it, and some are against it.

Didn't some cult movie say you're "that guy" if you wear a band's t-shirt to their own show?

I've never worn a band's shirt to their own show. Wear another band shirt, it lets people know what else you listen to and may strike up a conversation.

yeah.... you can wear a band tee, but you should wear one of a band that is more obscure than the band that you're going to see.

yes, it's dumb. it's a dumb cool factor hipster thing. don't follow it if you don't feel like it.

curiously, I was at Tokyo's Summer Sonic festival this year, and all the Japanese people wore past Summer Sonic or tees of bands that they're going to see.. so I guess they don't have this rule..

What is this? I thought it was cool to only wear the t-shirts of 80's metal or new wave bands if you are going to wear a band tee?

"Don't be that guy".

I know it was Jeremy Piven and therefore I know it was PCU.

I remember a movie saying this. Don't know if it's that one. Feels like there's another.

But here's an extended quote:
"Droz: What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy. "

Did it start with this 1994 movie? Maybe another? It's interesting..

I wear my special edition TDEP shirts (about 50 to 200 of them depending on which one) to shows, that way it's easier to find other just as big fans and the last time i was invited to the soundcheck because of the awesomeness of the shirt. Other than that I usually dont but have done a couple of times, dont see what the big deal is.

the hell? wearing a shirt shows the band you (maybe) supported them in the past. i see no reason why you WOULDNT wear one if you had one.

No, it did not start here.

T-shirts are a LOT of money to bands, a LOT of money to them. More than they will ever make from CDs, that big of a deal.

Saying "Hey guys, you're fucking awesome AND I bought a shirt because you're awesome AND I can to see you ANOTHER time, since this shirt is from last tour" doesn't piss them off, fuck, as an artist every time I see someone wearing one of my shirts I am fucking happy as sin!

You aren't pissing anyone off, you're not breaking any rules, and every concert I go to there is a crowd full of either similar bands' shirts, old shirts from band, new shirts from band.

Seriously, relax, and wear what you WANT to wear

I'm wearing my Mono shirt when I go see them in a month. Fuck the haters. I adore the shit out of the band so I will proclaim it to the heavens.

^ Merch is one of the biggest ways a band can make money, heck it's probably the number one way.

I will be wearing the dream theater shirt i picked up when they toured for the first time in aus a few years back to their concert in early december. And i will be walking out with a new tour t-shirt :D

I like the shirt, it fits well, so i will wear it.

This band had some awesome shirts.

Unwritten Law are just awesome anyway.

I have only on one occasion worn a band shirt to the show I was there for, and that was The Living End and because I had no other band shirts at the time (it was my first real show). Since then, I wear whatever I feel like. I generally don't wear a shirt of the band/artist I'm seeing. No real reason why, I just don't. If I see someone wearing them, I won't care.

Unless it's a large group for preteens screaming at the band just because they just recently heard their song on radio. Then I will hate with the fury of a thousand suns. (I'm referring to those who talk through every single song EXCEPT said radio hit. I don't mind those who sing even some of the songs and listen to the rest.)

I'm more concerned with the recent outbreak of women dressing up for physical gigs where they come out complaining that they were in the mosh in their heels and somehow didn't expect people to want to dance and jump around and whatever to the music. Shits me right up the wall.

You're thinking of the wrong rule.

You CAN wear the t-shirt of the band you're going to see.

You CANNOT wear the t-shirt of the band if you're actually in that band. Especially if your own picture's on it.

You gotta go deeper man. I already know that there are people with this opinion. Well, ok, it's useful to know who in the the thread feels this way. But, why does it feel tacky?

I went to a Coldplay concert last summer with my best friend. We both bought one of the shirts they were selling by the lines and wore them right away. Our tickets were for the grass area way in the back -- they went for 25 bucks or so... it was far and kinda sucky but oh well. Anyway, we're sitting on the grass, surrounded by a bunch of other people, listening to the opening acts when this guy approaches us and asks us what our favorite songs were... it was kind of weird but we answered him. He then told us that he works with the band and he'd like to give us front-row tickets, like we just passed a test or something. Those go for $250+. We accepted of course and asked him "why us?" and he just said "why not?" I am pretty sure it's because we had matching Coldplay t-shirts...

so the lesson here is -- wear the t-shirt, you never know when someone who works with the band might give you free front-row tickets.

This topic made me realize that it's fucking Jon Favreau playing Gutter in PCU.

Yet another reason to love that flick :lol :lol

I never knew wearing band t-shirts could get you free front row tickets or invites to watch the sound check. That instantly makes it awesome.

Still, if you're a PUA you really need to be wearing another bands t-shirt in order to make it easy for people to strike up conversations with you.

Meh, i do sometimes. And naturally always if i bought it there.
Also at festivals it's different, there are loads of different bands on.

Morrissey did it when he was with The Smiths.
I read he was the first frontman to do that.

Branding of any sort on my clothing in a big no no.

Sing songs/chants. Good for atmosphere and no one will question who you support.

Obviously PCU is the first thing I thought of upon seeing this thread.

That said I abide by that rule 100% with the only acceptable exception of a shirt bought at the show.

I know that this question exists, but I'll never understand it.

Who came up with such a dumb rule?

Concert Snob: Don't wear a shirt of the band you're going to see!
Regular Person: Why?
Concert Snob: Because we obviously know you like the band, you're here.
Regular Person: So...?
Concert Snob: You look like an idiot!
Regular Person: Why?
Concert Snob: YOU JUST DO!
Regular Person: K, while you rage I'm going to go listen to my favorite band.
Concert Snob: They probably hate you for wearing that shirt, idiot.
Regular Person: Yes, I'm sure they're deeply upset that I like their band so much I bought clothes with them on it.

...who the fuck cares, people?
