Weekend Confirmed 71: Return of the Jeff Cannata

Okay do we have any info from anyone else on the Diablo III info? Do we need a separate topic for this?
There was a comment on one of the diablo fan forums shooting down a fake leaker and they said

In short, nothing in these new tweets even approaches the level of big news revelations we’ll soon be able to share with you guys. (And I am not at all sure that the changes will be popular. We’re talking major reworking of numerous game systems.)

Who was shooting down the fake leaker though?
A guy from one of the fansites, he wasn't in attendance but has access to people who were apparently. Trawling through these fansites over the last hour or so there were some hint's given by this guy, and from those hints I'm going to guess the shitstorm will be related to either the skills change or a retcon of something in the lore from between D1->D2, most likely the skills.

Not going to lie...I shut it off after the first couple of minutes worth of shitty jokes. My humor is entirely suspect, though, as I'd just finished LM'ing my A O listening to the latest BC.

:p

But I will go back to it. I simply Cannata afford not to!

Oh man, NHL would be perfect for a Fight Night Champion-style story mode. Imagine a kid that looks vaguely like Rob Lowe... the setting is a sleepy Canadian town. The kid has amazing skills that land him a spot on a minor league hockey town. His talent is unquestionable--but he's soft. He's got to learn to fight back if he's going to make it big. And... uh oh--he also falls in love with the coach's daughter!

That would be....well.....awesome. There's no other words for it.

Better than last week, that's for sure. I'd be happy with Spicer as a regular, even if he didn't contribute much this week.

The innuendo jar will be introduced soon, don't worry.

You guys still think that people only play portables,,, portably? Nintendo would never have sold as many DSes if the key demographic were "people who play games on a train or waiting at the doctor's office."

Going to jump into the handheld discussion as requested and say I don't give a shit.
Please, these discussions about relevance have been done to death. If the software is good I might buy either. But I'm sick of people talking about price and apple comparisons and all this other obvious bullshit that gets mentioned every second episode.

"If you like video games, I guarantee you will like his work."

Sorry, but no. Cryptonomicon was fucking interminable. I've tried to read it three times now and I think it's awful.

Honestly if that's the case sounds like they might be changing up the gameplay systems to maybe make it more accessible to maybe put it on consoles.

Damn defensive back spidey senses always tingling in NCAA and Madden!

To talk briefly on the whole 3DS/Vita discussion, Sony is being very smart with their launch. Regardless of how the Vita does overall, it is going to be a guaranteed positive launch with such a heavy hitter like Uncharted coming out. Vita won't stumble out of the gates with negative perception in terms of software like what has happened on 3DS. In fact, Vita arguably has the best launch game coming since Halo on Xbox and Mario 64 on Nintendo 64. There is also the possibility of having a hidden gem at launch too. While everyone is talking about Uncharted Vita, Sound Shapes may be able to come in under the radar and share some of the spotlight on the digital front. I expect there to be some decent sub 10 dollar games on PSN for Vita at launch.

3DS has a lot of problems besides hardware price. The 3D effect is one of them since consumers don't really care about 3D but it isn't a big issue. Better software is the biggest issue and that will be rectified at retail this holiday with Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7. Now I say retail specifically because Nintendo's digital store isn't very good, and I have no reason to believe this will improve anytime soon. Why doesn't Nintendo has something interesting and cheap like Sound Shapes coming out on 3DS? I can go buy a 3D version of Xevious for 4 dollars on the Nintendo estore, oh happy day! Also, the connected online experience on 3DS is almost worthless. As a 3DS owner I hope they can clean up a lot of this stuff, because I don't like having a potential bomba (Gaf term!) on my shelf.

It's obvious (at least to me) that the 3DS IS launching this holiday at $170 w/ Luigi's Mansion 3, Starfox 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.

The early launch at the $250 price point was a soft launch to test several things, among those being;
a) the impact that tablets/smartphones/ios/etc. has had on the dedicated handheld console market
b) the price point that dedicated handheld markets can bear
c) the brand equity in a "high-end" DS variant

All of those test points came out negative from a Nintendo perspective and, as a result, they were forced to massively lower the price and unveil the true launch of the system this holidy at $170

One more post on Vita for now. I think this is very interesting for the discussion and I found it in the Vita thread on GAF:

<plug>Great Little War Game is out for iOS now</plug>,
but we've also got the Vita version finished already - just waiting for the unit to go on sale. :)

I can confirm that the machine is everything you'd like it to be - a really sweet bit of kit. And best of all, Sony are seriously pushing indies forward, so it's AppStore should start filling up in the same way the iOS one has.

Nintendo can learn a lot from their attitude.

Here is an IOS developer who already has the Vita version done and waiting for the device to be on sale. Personally, this is great news because this means we won't necessarily be bombarded by only 40 dollar retail games on Vita. I love me indie gaming, and some of the more interesting games I've played lately are sub 10 dollar indie games I've bought on Steam or IOS.

We showed them our game, they liked it loads and thought it a good fit for their machine, so they sent us four kits. Gratis. Just like that.

I know, never happened to me before either, but this has got to be good news for both devs and gamers. Unlike Nintendo, Sony now "get it".

Sony did just say they were going to invest a ton of money into indie gaming, and if this is the first step I'm all for it. My anticipation for Vita is substantially growing.

I am going to guess that the skill system will be less like diablo 2 and more like WoW, which fits both things that are major changes and things that would cause a shitstorm, at least from people who never really played WoW and just complaain about it because it's the thing to do.

The iPad and iPhone yak is what it is.

Pretending that a big factor now or ever is people actually doing most play on a portable out and about.

Bold statements about 3DS never being as popular as 2 Nintendo handhelds with pathetic to no competition or the most popular system in raw numbers of all time, DS. Uncharted on Vita looks much better than PilotWings 3DS.

And Garnett's FOUR-DEE-DOL-LERS

this is reaction on the same subj I agree with

Whoa, that's pretty incredible. Sony really going for it with the indie devs.

I'm a little disappointed with Garnett's NCAA 12 talk, and maybe he'll respond to my post. But I almost get the vibe that Garnett doesn't understand enough about football to fully grasp the changes that were done with NCAA 12, and is really underselling the game because of that reason.

The brand new tackle engine makes a huge difference in the way NCAA plays and animates. They were able to get rid of player warping and player suction with the new engine. That may not sound like it changes much, but it makes the game flow so much more naturally. Also, physics come into play a little more now so you actually see tackles that make more sense.

No more 170 pound backs running over 300 pound DTs. Just doesn't happen anymore.

I do agree with the super LBs/DBs batting down passes they have no buisness of ever making a play on. That is a big issue, but they fixed the defense in just about every other area. Defenders actually play cover 2 correctly now!

If you're playing a hard cover 2, the corners playing the flat will actually play their zone deeper if a running back or tight end doesn't come out to the flat. Changes like that make the defense play much more realistic, and actually makes zone cover 2 useful in a video game for the first time since probably ESPN 2K5.

And that happens with all the zones. If there isn't players in their asigned area, the defender will give the other zones a bit of support. Makes a big difference.

Also, defensive/offensive adjustments help a lot. It's a feature that has been in NCAA for a while now, but so many people have told me they didn't even realize you could press LB (xbox 360) at the playcalling menu and make adjustments to how aggressive defenders play zone, or whether the running backs are trying to cover up, or trying for that big run at the cost of ball security.

Also, it's extremely easy to download rosters with players names. If you want you can download the rosters from my gamertag, just type in 'Jag' and download the roster from me. You'll have every player name in the game, and it auto loads everytime you boot NCAA up.

I feel like indie Jeff reads me a menu of indie games but doesn't want to convey why I should taste them.

"Getting on board with boardgames" Just, getting games on board. It's cleaner /timberlake

Oh wow, Groove Coaster is amazing. I picked it up due to the recommendation on the podcast. One thing I would add is don't play this game with just the ipad/ipod/iphone speakers. It is a crime the way the speakers butcher the music. Grab a headset!

Game reminds me of a modified Elite Beat Agents. Gotta tap to the rhythm of the music in some unique ways with the visualizer going.

Me: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGH LIGHTNING INAZUMA 11 AAAAAAAAARGH."

I talk about it too much, but, Jeff, it's 1 of Level-5's 3 pillars, it's the best new property of this generation, and it's a huge hit in Japan. 1 got localized this year, years late, because Level-5 is stupid. There are 3 now, 1 spinoff released this year, and 1 more coming in 2011. Music is by Mitsuda of Chrono fame. It's Pokemon plus Shaolin Soccer plus Captain Tsubasa. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArqtzPcOsE0 http://www.actionbutton.net/?p=461

Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY8tktX6hUE

Similar situation to me at the 90 minute mark with the "player choice as gameplay" talk.

Jeff: Get Garnet on some Tactics Ogre for PSP it has both of what he's on about at that time signature, has true consequences for both that actually influence the other, and came out originally in 1995.

I think that iPhone etc vs 3DS/Vita is a false dichotomy. Yes, the increasing smart phone market is taking more of the 'small, quirky thing to play in five minute chunks' market, but there's no comparison when it comes to the larger games. Does anyone want to play platformers or RPGs on a phone with no controller?

The DS obviously made a huge splash with things like Brain Age, but ultimately the games that really sold the systems were New Super Mario Bros and Pokemon. Those types of games on portables are still popular, and there is a huge amount of people who want to play Mario, Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, etc who will want to play them on the 3DS. Is there an audience who is forgoing traditional gaming handhelds for phones? Sure, but I think you're really overstating the effect. There's a pretty different market there.

Here's why I love Weekend Confirmed:

Garnett and Jeff are both these reasonably buff, bro-ey dudes. They like their football. They're manly men.

And yet RPGs are Garnett's favorite genre, and Jeff is "on that Magic card tip".

Love it!

It's closer to my experience that the old bro/nerd dichotomy is so broken and hasn't applied for a long time.

Enjoyed the show. Just wanted to drop by with a bit of feedback. Mainly regarding Vita/3DS discussion. It continues to stagger me how the cost is consistently considered a barrier on Vita/3DS, but no one ever really mentions that an iPad costs $500. And it's the same situation for an iPhone, with expensive contracts replacing that up-front cost.

You might be able to purchase Groove Coaster for $0.99, sure, but good grief there's an enormous outlay ahead of that.

It's because ipads and iphones aren't just dedicated gaming machines. They're cell phones, work machines, anything you really want or need them to be. Also, Apple tax.

Think of it this way: would you pay $200 for a cell phone, $150 for a portable gaming machine and $150 for a really fancy blackberry for work if they were all the quality of an Apple product? Probably. And the iPhone is all of that for the same combined price. The value proposition is clearly worth it to consumers.

You can buy a touch for around the same price as the Vita and DS.

Anyway, I think it's stupid that both Sony and Nintendo are stubbornly pretending iOS doesn't exist and sticking to their $40 price points for portable games. It's too much, people aren't willing to pay that much for games anymore. The other problem with it is it drags the price of everything else up. Games that are $1, $2, $3 on iOS end up $6, $7, $10 on the DSi, 3DS, and PSP.

As for screen size, I'm torn. On one hand I am in love with my DSi XL and can't see ever playing a DS game on anything but it. But on the other hand, I've been using a PSP as my MP3 player for 4 years and I can't go back to a PSP 2000 now that I've had a PSP Go in my pocket every day for the past 2 years.

I think Sony and Nintendo need to make two seperate systems. One portable and one pocketable. I would never take my DSi XL everywhere I go because it's too big, but when I'm at home or traveling that is absolutely the system I would take. Conversely, My PSP Go is always in my pocket but I still play PSP Games on my PSP 2000 when I'm at home.

I think the 3DS needs a 3DS lite and an XL. It's a little bit too thick right now, and the current screen size isn't sexy like the DSi XL. The Vita is already "XL" so Sony needs to release a Vita Go as well.

I just got hooked in to this 4 weeks ago, I really enjoy the show. I'll save this one for tomorrow to the noon break in Shanghai .__.u

I know this thread has been ruined by spoiler talk before, so sorry to bring this up, but...

If you are going to talk about spoilers, and they are "dangerous" enough for the host to tell people to skip forward, then it should be mandatory to give a time index for when it is safe to start listening again in the podcast's description text.

When the guys start talking about Bastion, Garnett says "this segment will be about four minutes." However, if you skip ahead four minutes at the point told, then start to listen again, you are dropped right in the middle of spoiler talk for Bastion - as it turns out the segment lasts about ten minutes. This leads to me, and I guess others, to start jumping forward and back scrubbing through the podcast, playing spoiler Russian Roulette to find the end point, hoping not to hit on a stray spoilerish word as I do.

Just to be clear, I am not complaining about you guys talking about spoilers in general, or referencing a specific section of a game - it is needed at times - but when you choose to talk about the ending of a two week old game, and also choose to label the start of your spoiler talk, then there really needs to be a better way to tell the audience when to return rather than guessing when the segment will end beforehand.

I know this is a bit late, but if anyone still cares, skip 27:00 to 37:00 to completely miss out on Bastion talk.

I feel the same way. I haven't finished Bastion yet so I skipped forwards 4 minutes and they were still talking about it. Fortunately I didn't hear anything spoilerish but it was a little irritiating.

Can't someone put time stamps in the show's description on the MP3 or something? I know I've seem some podcasts do that. Problem solved.

Best solution. I'd hate for them to get into an awesome discussion and suddenly have to end it because they told people to fast forward exactly 4 minutes.

After watching some EVO streams this weekend I want a RPG where the fighting system is a 2D fighter. I want to play the story of a kid who finds an arcade cabinet in a local pizza place, goes on to rule the school yard, college, the region and then finally faces down Phoenix using TRON at Evo!!! Sheesh I don't even play fighting games but that was fun to watch

Anyway regarding handhelds for what it’s worth my daughter wants a 3DS and Nintendogs & Cats but the thing was $250. We'd be right there on August 12 if it weren't for the screen issue. I'm sure the 3DS will do fine this holiday and Jeff is right there will always be a market for younger gamers. It won't put up DS number but nothing beside apple will (certainly not the PS3 or 360)

Also I don't know why they dismiss the idea that someone would want a phone and a 3DS or a tablet and a Vita and a kindle but are perfectly willing to accept that someone would want a PS3 AND a 360 when that is beyond redundant. I'll buy a handheld long before I buy a second console, but maybe I'm the only one :/

I'm sure the two handhelds will be fine. Didn't the PSP outsell the 360 in the last quarter? Just not in America. All I hope is that the Vita has a big enough base to support the localization companies. Between what Japan puts out and Sony's first party offerings I'll be very happy (come to me Grand Knights History! Don't stay in Japan! Noooooo).

One more point just to throw out there since I think its overlooked in this discussion, I've had my ipod touch less then I've had a PSP and while the PSP has remained the same and can play the most recent games my ipod touch has gone to shit.

Apple apparently has made it their mission to bork the thing with updates that make it worse (and which I've stopped downloading) and I can't play the most recent games even though it’s only been two years (or so)

WHY FINAL FANTASY TACTICS WHY!! The greatest game of all time hits the app store this week and I can't play it. Of course this means I need to buy a new touch because I am a complete FFT whore but it does annoy me knowing that I can buy a touch or an ipad this year and a Vita this year and in 4 to 5 years the Vita will still work fine and play everything but the other won't.

Not a huge issue and sure there are "lite" versions and such but knowing that I can pick up a Vita for $250 and keep it for years without issue is important to me. Probably less of an issue for people who play on their phones but I like actually having a long battery life

Jeff dominated the From Dust segment with his rants. I can understand complaining about the controls, but I found his complaints about the timers to be baffling. The timers are linked to world events, without which, there wouldn't be much of a game. Also he said the timers were arbitrary, which they're really not at all, by any traditional definition of the word.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the first times I can remember a game being cheaper on PSN than on Itunes.

You can buy the PSP version of FFT for $9.99, and it will work on Vita. The Itunes version is going to be $15.99. This version isn't universal either. You will have to shell out at least another 16 dollars (or more) when the Ipad version is available a month or two from this Thursday when the IOS version is out.

It sounded like he wanted an updated version of the terrain editor in SimCity 2000

And who can blame him! I probably spent as much time in that mode making landscapes for my cities as I did making cities

Well that may be. I havent gotten to it yet myself but I hear the last level in From Dust is basically a free form level editor.

Likewise. I played videogames with members of my university soccer and hockey teams, and they loved everything from Smash Brothers to Halo, to the NHL games.

I played games with engineers, math majors, and art history majors, and they loved everything from Elder Scrolls, to Quake, to Mario.

This 'dudebro' bullshit was old the day it started. It's bullshit insecurity pushed by a community that can't handle the notion that the games they love might not be evolving and modernizing at the pace they would like. Fuck off.

I like this for the same reason, and definitely agree with the last statement. Garnett has a different mindset from reality though or else his job just fucks him cause I couldn't tell you the last time Garnett actually finished an RPG.

That being said count me in as a guy who loves college football and the nfl, likes to go out from time to time with his gf and friends to hang out at a bar, and doesn't mind doing out doors stuff especially in the summer. Yet I also love to play MMOs, RPGs, indie games, read manga and comics, draw and paint, and listen to a ton of different types of music.

I mean I usually listen to ESPN Radio or NPR on my way home as of late only to take a break before dinner and play some Magic the Gathering 2012 online. I'm also extremely lucky that my GF likes that I'm so all over the place and a little bit of everything.

I'm probably way wrong and way stupid but...

I feel that when people say iOS games will kill bigger $40 handheld games is like saying flash games or low cost indies on the PC will kill the big PC games because of the price difference.
There's a room for both on the PC and I believe there's room for both on handhelds, so I dunno why people keep saying dedicated handheld gaming is dead.

I'm also tired of the argument that people will only carry one thing at a time. I've been a handheld gamer (pretty even in terms of time spent with consoles and PC) since the GameBoy and I've never brought them out of the house. I don't live in a very big city, so my commutes are always relatively short. But portability within the household is just as important when you share a home and can't afford multiple TVs and consoles for multiple rooms.

I also do a lot of bedside gaming. Being able to just "stand by" the machine and go to sleep without losing progress is pretty great.

But anyway, great show as usual. Monday (Tuesday this week as it was a long weekend for me) mornings are way more tolerable when I have this show to look forward to.

These threads are way shorter then people have less to whine and complain about.

It is an interesting question posted above and one I have myself. I want to show the top 10 current sellers on Steam first:

1)Eye -Indie $19.99
2) From Dust - UBI $14.99
3) Portal 2 - Valve $29.99
4) Dead Island - Big Publisher $49.99
5) Blops Annihlation Content - DLC - $14.99
6)Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Big Publisher $44.99
7)Terraria - Indie $9.99
8) L4D2 - Valve $19.99
9)SSF4 Arcade Edition - Big Publisher $39.99
10)Counter Strike Source - Valve $19.99

You have a mix of games from big publishers and indie's all at varying price ranges. New games, old games, and DLC. We haven't seen anything like this embraced on any other platform, iOS included. iOS is all about being dirt cheap. Consoles are mostly about their premium prices for games. There has to be a console or portable device that eventually bridges this gap you would think? With the lessons Sony has learned I'm starting to think the Vita is going to be first dedicated device to do so. Now we'll see how the market responds.
