Weekend Confirmed Ep. 12, Massive Pre-3 Episode (Guest: Sessler!)

I love how they make sweeping generalizations about MK. Deception wasn't a reboot, Armageddon definitely wasn't a reboot (was compared to Trilogy), MKvsDC definitely wasn't a reboot. This is the first time where they actually are doing a reboot (unless you count MK SM as a reboot). Also, Leahy should have mentioned that theres an actual TRAILER thats out. I don't think Garnett got that.

edit: and yeah, I don't get the RDR load time hate. Do these people not install games to their HDDs?

I thought we did discuss it as a reboot.

I was cracking up during the iPad scrabble thing. One thing you guys didn't mention is how it sounds equally as ridiculous as Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube. :lol

Gary Whitta told a pretty funny story on a podcast about playing the $1300 game of Scrabble, and how none of them could actually get it to work.

Good ep. Love that Jeff is seems to end up the odd man out with his opinions but doesn't back down. Keep fighting the good fight.

That song during the break completely brought me back to the hours I spent playing ut99. Good stuff.

.. the music garnett chose for the end was just flat out nasty.

:lol :lol

great podcast though. Enjoyed all of it. Didn't know about the dreamcast stuff coming to the HD twins so that made me very happy

While they were talking about the problems of the Unreal 3 engine and streaming data I wondered what happened to the old Dyack vs. Epic lawsuit. Did we ever hear how that ended? If we did, I don't remember...

Good luck at E3... but only one podcast? That sucks

Just throwing this out there, but doesn't the Giantbomb E3 HQ look like a cool place to hangout Thursday night? You know have a few drinks, sit in front of a mic, say a few words, insult some people

... seems like a good time if you ask me :D

It's still pretty long even when installed.

My good man, are you slyly asking for a Weekend Confirmed/Giant Bomb crossover?

I would love that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you could say what I'm trying to say is that talking about 3D should be prohibited.

Insecure much? Why not talk about 3D.... ifyr going to bebuying a new tv anytime soon chances are it'll be 3D. So why not, I'm more likely to have a 3D tv in the next two years than either a 360 or natal..... soshould we stop talking about those as well?...

Thanks garnet for mention Ireland.

I'm fairly bummed at the nil all draw tonight. I was in a bar that was giving a free pint for every goal France concede :(

Hey Garnett,

Just want you to know that I just ordered a Scotch on my flight down to E3 while listening to this weeks show.

Seemed appropriate. :D

I'm really surprised it appears everyone in the gaming press has had a very different experience of 3D to me. I've found it to be really awesome. A major step forward. It's something more for next generation in terms of TV technology (we really need well priced autostereoscopic TVs for most people to care) and the performance hit it costs the current consoles.

Hope we'll hear from you on any podcast during E3, David.

I have to say, this podcast completely has me waiting for fridays again, RIP 1 up yours, Hail the new king Weekend Confirmed :D

Awesome show s far, sessler is entirely in the cast chemistry.

In regards to why shooters are so prevalant these days is that from a programming standpoint, it's easy to draw a line from one object to another and then present the player with a satisfying, visceral resonse.

The reason why gun combat has no emotional impact on the player is because there is no consequnce for their actions. If you put a player in a room with a gun and tell them not to shoot it, there is nothing stopping then from popping off a couple of shots into a wall and then reloading their save to go back to the state before they shot. Look at red dead redemption's multiplayer. One of the most tense parts in a western film is the stand off. In red reads multiplayer they convey this by taking gun control away from players for a few seconds and then say "3...2...1...you can shoot now". It's incredibly difficult to give a person a gun to shoot in a multiplayer enviroment and then give them a reason not to blow another dude's head off.

I'd love to see a free to play game like apb were when a player dies, they have to choose between a long respawn time (24 hours+) or pay 99cent to respawn. I could see awesome stand offs followed by players eitherbacking out of a fight or surrendering. I suppose we would also see some rich dudes going around killing other people without caring about death.

Looking forward to listening.

I enjoy Sessler's insights, I just wish the Feedback had an MP3 feed (instead of a direct download), if i can't download on itunes to listen to I usually just skip it.

What's with the 3D hate. The Sess says it doesn't add anything to gameplay. Well motion control doesn't add anything to gameplay and that's the new greatest thing. 3D is here to stay and if you don't like it, don't use it.

Can't wait to HEAR about Epic Mickey next week and Sessler is fucking awesome you guys have to have him on again.
LOL @ all the unicorn talk ahaha

I find it funny that in a previous episode they talked about how in 2D Mario you try to jump on dudes but in 3D Mario you try to avoid them because jumping on them in 3D is hard due to lack of depth perception - then dismissed 3D gaming.

People are missing the big picture here. When you have a 2D representation of a 3D scene you can't perceive depth, the best you can do is rely on visual cues like shadows and object size. (Also known as why people with one bad eye generally suck at sports)

3D done right should make those problems go away. I fully expect that after 3D takes off people will look back and think "how in the world did we play these games before?"

re: E3 "winners"

as far as I'm concerned, unless the 3DS and new Zelda showings are a disaster, I can't not see Nintendo coming out on top this year. Considering how terrible their show has been for the past years, they have a solid foundation with those two alone. This is ignoring Other M, Pokemon Black/White, and other unannounced games. It's a major hardware and major game reveal. well, unless Microsoft and Sony really go beyond any expectations.

Sessler sauce on top of the podcast was great. And a good balance of yuks and info.

When talking rise of the shooters you can't leave out GoldenEye.

It is interesting when trying to pinpoint what made Wii Sports click it is hard to say. They were on the right track that isn't anything specific other than tennis and bowling work. It is playing while not hunched on the ground or leaning in a chair. That plus the social element of the games in multiplayer.

Natal needs to find something that hits the mark now.

Someone mentions Natal doesn't really need a great game cause Wii didn't. Maybe true but it is 5 years later. Lots of people have dipped a toe into motion and if they liked got a Wii.
And MS is really trying to reach the gamers as they already have the system that is required to play with it. Sessler mentions maybe voice will be a big part of it to get those guys.

Price importance is the point it ended on. Wii wasn't cheap and still isn't. They built in the room to drop but they haven't had to. They still can while Move and Natal are expensive. Sessler is on the right track.

Fucking Garnett. :lol

Yeah, I was one of the people saying, "I'd buy a new piece of hardware so I could play the latest games." And you're making it sound like, "Yeah, well no shit. That goes without saying." But that's how the question was framed - What would get you to buy a new console? And games isn't a reasonable response? Just because you took the question a certain way doesn't invalidate how other people took it.

God dammit sometimes you drive me nuts.

I'm only a half hour into the show, but thanks Brian for defending MGS: Peace Walker's honor. "Try sucking less" is definitely what's going on with Garnett and that game.

I don't know why, but it irks me when people primarily base their opinion of a game on the fact that they are either no good at it or aren't used to it yet.

It's true that the PW controls take a little getting used to, but once you do they are no longer an issue. You will have a moment when it all clicks. I think Garnett's opinions on the game were a bit premature.

Still, love the show so far!

Great podcast

Awful awful music. My god.
Yeah, I don't like the music breaks. I don't understand why it has a place on a gaming podcast. It's really annoying having a great section of discussion, then sitting through three minutes of techno. (I was listening to it in the car and couldn't reach iPod to skip it) I miss the small little 15 second music breaks from 1UP Yours. :'(

Great, great show though. I was laughing out loud so many times.

Sessler was great. Of what I've seen of his television work (Australian here!), he seems to play to his audience, for better or worse. He needs to be on the podcast more often. :)

The problem with Nintendo is they currently seem unwilling to provide an entertaining conference for core gamers (even though they usually have the content to do so). They concentrate on 3 or 4 things..and do so very slowly (I presume so the mainstream press have clear focal points to report on)...and as a result they suck almost every drop of excitement out of their show.

They could have easily "won" the last couple of E3 conferences..if they actually showed all their core content and the best of the 3rd parties (the content they showed last year could have done in 30 minutes...but they dragged it out for 90)

I don't think they even did a software showreel in last years conference (if they did it was a very limited one).

ok, that was a pretty good episode. The 3D discussion does kinda get old after a while though :lol . Always love sessler on a podcast though, he always has great points.

I don't like realistic shotguns. Realism results in boring gameplay. All shotguns should have a 1 yard range

Why the hell does the guy in Alpha Protocol turn invisible? So unrealistic

Sounds about right

I caught this too and figured it wasn't worth talking about.

Yeah, it's really minor but it stood out.

That said, this was an awesome episode. Sessler really fit in well with the WC crew.
