Weird Americanisms (UK vs USA thread)

America and the UK share so much , like inventing a sport then getting their asses kicked at it

It's not really the same.. US invented baseball, but the WBC is something that the US hasn't competed in until the last decade. So it's not like we were losing all those years, we just didn't go. The problem they're having now is that most of the players don't want to go because of the risk of injury and because it messes up their offseason workouts and spring training. If our best players went every year, we'd win every time.

Also, a lot of our baseball talent isn't homegrown, it's from South America, and most of those guys play for their home country.

Yeah, I'm British and I'm still wondering who the fuck still uses a hot water bottle. I think my grandparents used them after the war when their house didn't have all four walls.

It's funny how un-American American sports are.

Oh, you came bottom of the league? You can stay and keep all that TV money. And you can have first pick of the best players next season so you can do better.

handy to keep one about, i find hot water bottles help with soothing my migraines when the pain killers are taking time to kick in, ear and tooth aches they are good for as well. I dont think may people use then to keep warm anymore.

Everyone I know has a dryer. Everyone I knew at Uni had a dryer. Your primitive Scot friends know nothing about the UK!

Tumble dryer-less and microwave-less Glasgow-gaf (who could not live without a kettle), here. We just dry things on airers in the spare room. Also, hot water bottles for the win, and those triangular *things* (which aren't scones) and the white sauce (not gravy) confuses one.

This thread is just full of... oh, I needed a hoot. ^_^

I can't believe we're having an argument on how to boil water.

I mean, for fuck's sake, there is absolutely no difference whatsoever in the end product. It's two different means to the exact same end.

Microwaving water is a health hazard imho.
From the risk of water exploding, to the risk of spilling boiling water on your hands as you retrieve the cup(s), it just seems like a much better idea to just buy yourself an electric kettle for $10.

Whatever, Americans do that. But each guest receives their own full-sized cake. There are never any leftovers.

Whenever I said "we" I meant 'Mericans. Cause I are one. I just currently live in the UK.

Edit:

From my experience the English don't eat the birthday cake at the party. They cut it, package it up, and eat it at home.

LOL.

Water doesn't explode.

Boiling water is boiling water. If you can't safely work with it, maybe you should stick with iced tea?

I'm almost tempted to purchase one of these "kettles" and conduct a Tea Taste Test in my office and see if anyone can tell the difference between the microwave tea and the kettle tea.

Because...its...faster?

Is it though? I don't believe it is to be honest. How long does it take? Don't forget that while the water is boiling I can do the rest of the preparations like grabbing a mug, put in tea and sugar etc. I don't think you save any time in the whole run.

Now the Kettle is awesome. It's sole purpose is to boil water incredibly quickly. I wish they were more popular in the states. On the other hand, you have to do a bit of searching to find a coffee bean grinder here in the UK.

Another thing... Cornish Pasties. HOLY SHIT those things are good!! Wish they were popular in the US. Think of a hot pocket. A Pasty is what a hot pocket should taste like and you can fill it with basically anything. The beef, potato, and gravy ones are amazing. It's like a portable pot pie made from scratch.

My local bakery makes these. They're pretty good. They also make an Irish Soda bread at St Patricks day and whenever someone requests it. Not bad.

I wish clotted cream was readily available in the US. I can't find it anywhere and kind of hesitant to order it over the internet.

Take a bowl out, fill it with tap water, put it a 2-3 minutes on the microwave. depending of the arrangement in your kitchen you wouldn't even need to talk.

Yeah, good stuff. also, if you've never tried a scotch egg you should. It's basically a hard boiled egg inside a ball of breakfast sausage. They're pretty damn good.

Scotch eggs are pretty awesome. Local pub/bar makes those and they're awesome.

That sounds disgusting. British are horrible at naming things. It sounds like it would be good, but clotting has the connotation of blood clotting. That's the only usage I can think of, anyway.

you know what i've never made that link until now, eurgh!

still gonna eat it though its lush

I'm reading about it, looks great. Sounds like it's pretty much butter, but probably a milder, more milky taste. But yeah, that name is nasty. Damn, I'd probably never try it if I hadn't read about what it actually is first.

From the name, I figured it was spoiled milk.

you should try getting some sometime, goes great on a scone with jam

I have an electric kettle that I use almost exclusively for making swiss miss hot chocolate. I'll make some earl grey and dump some honey into it if I'm sick/have a sore throat, though.

That reminds me of another thing: Grey. I'm american, but I always spell it Grey because "gray" looks weird to me.

So? Blood sausage is awesome. Wish it were more popular here in the US.

Also, what's up with the people in this thread using water to make hot chocolate? It's supposed to be made with milk!

depends what type of hot chocolate, we have plenty of instant hot chocolates here you just pour boiling water on

I don't even know if I can get it in the US. Unless I can find some place that imports goods from the UK that is.

Never had blood sausage.

Hot chocolate is definitely better with milk, but most of the instant hot chocolates have some type of dehydrated milk like substance in them, I'd guess. When I make it homemade though, which is the only way I drink it, I make it with milk, sugar, and cocoa.

We call it black pudding, so the Americans are the one using the queasy naming in that case.

True, but if I didn't know what black pudding was and I tried it expecting some type of dessert I might be rather unpleasantly surprised. :p

the world baseball classic doesn't have the prestige or tradition like other international sporting competitions.

the salary cap and the draft system is one of the best things about our professional leagues. it avoids having a few teams/ franchises dominate year in and year out an allows for better parity. the teams manage to make money instead of losing it.

Makes it hell of a lot better than the same few European teams winning soccer titles every year or dominating the rest.

I had to google what an electric kettle was and I think I've seen them in stores.
I just use a regular kettle and put it on the stove. :/

Eh, it might bother some people but I don't get why blood is considered gross.

But then it's not nearly as creamy. Unless your mixes have powdered milk in them?

yeah the ones for use with hot water do have powdered milk in, yeah not quite as good but so much more convenient
