One that bugs me is the idea that if you're clear of the fireball of a big explosion, you're fine. Uh, no, the shockwave will still kill you. That's not to get into the impossibility of "outrunning" an explosion as we see in every movie.

How about how on shows like Supergirl they'll walk down the street, in full earshot of other people, talking about Supergirl stuff? I always expect someone to overhear and go "You're Supergirl? Wait, I can totally see it. Hey everybody, Kara Danvers is Supergirl!"

There's a decent subversion of this in the underrated Josie and the Pussycats movie. Parker Posey as the main villain gives a nice speech to some government officials and then when they're leaving turns her back and says, sotto voce, that she'll betray them. But they haven't yet left the room so they just say "Excuse me, did you say something?"

A really specific nerd rage thing for me is that the makers of movies and TV have decided that the sound of Wolverine's claws being drawn should sound like a sword being drawn or a sword on metal. Uh, no. It was "snikt!" in the comics for a reason. That's the sound of them clicking into place, mixed with the sound of them tearing out of his skin.

Bomb has a timer showing 5 minutes, takes 10 minutes to disarm at 1 second.

Bonus: people who stand around the person disarming the bomb after saying "I'm not going anywhere"

Horribly cliched dialogue is really the only thing that gets me. Most other stuff is noticeable but forgivable for the sake of the medium. Pacing, editing, drama, and intrigue require things to work differently in film than in real life.

It's a filmmaking thing. You gotta do countless takes so eating the food isn't all that practical.

Just you wait until I get my first feature out. Everyone will clear their plates or they won't be leaving that table. It might lead to pacing problems in that half an hour is spent on a meal but I don't care.

Yeah, in CBS shows they use this made-up site called Bing. So unrealistic.

That's pretty much a version of Chekhov's Gun. If the movie specifically points out that something's never been done before or that someone will never do something, you know someone is gonna do that thing by the end of the movie.

Or you see someone do an action that seems out of place and explicitly called out for, and you know that is going to be something at the end that is going to be used a comedic relief or be utilized in a special way at the end.

It is just color by numbers writing at that point. Some things might change but at the basis it is just a formula that has been repeated a thousand times over.

This is how Hollywood mixes their movies nowadays. Everything is super loud except for the dialogue. It's really annoying, I'm constantly fidgeting with the volume control with some of these fucking things.

I got a receiver that has Audessey dynamic volume in it.. night and day difference. If you regularly watch movies it is something worthwhile investing in.

One thing that bugs me is long steadicam shots that pan forever so the entire screen is just one stuttering blur for ages. One way to take me out of the film and screw with my eyes

I suppose you could say that since his hands themselves are also made of metal that his claws coming out are metal sliding against metal

I have a lot of friends in mixing and editing who insist on using that one child laughter sound effect. I mean, we're talking big blockbusters, multi-million dollar films that use it and I'll tell you why.

It's so fucking obnoxious to hear that "hahaha? hehe aghhaha" and that's the point. It's become a running joke behind the scenes. Things like your Wilhelm Scream are made to be referential but this giggle is still used today, buried in mixes, all because it's a funny gag the sound editors like to toss in. At screenings, it's not uncommon to hear people snickering when it pops up. It's meant to be aggravating, and that it is.

I hadn't noticed this one, but the one I can never help but notice is the stock baby crying sound. It's not as common, but it's really obvious when that one sample is used. The first time I remember hearing it is one of my earliest memories of being in a movie theater. It was in the pre-movie filler for AMC where they tell you to be quiet during the movie. It's so annoying because the baby that made that noise is probably old or dead now.
