A gallery of the other contenders

"A T-shaped design has scooped a £5,000 prize in a competition to find the next generation of electricity pylons.

Danish engineering firm Bystrup beat 250 rivals to win the Royal Institute of British Architects contest.

It set the challenge to replace the familiar "triangle" design - in use since the 1920s - in May, although there is no commitment to build them.

An increasing number of pylons are expected to be needed to connect new wind, nuclear and hydroelectric plants."

-------------------------

I love design competitions like this, where people have to come up with new designs for things which have been the same for a long time. It always produces some interesting results.

I quite like it actually, although some of the other designs were pretty incredible. It looks quite futuristic, I could imagine going past in in my flying car and it not looking out of place.

Do other countries use many electricity pylons or is it all underground?

All of the other ones were horrible apart from the one that looked like a sailing mast. The winning one is stylish but cheap and practical. Reasonable decision.

Erm, what did the old ones look like? (Or come to think of it, aren't most of the power lines in the UK underground).

Pretty much all the ones in the US are T shaped. Wood though, except the high tension ones which are metal (not quite like that, but not that different, not a glossy white though)

The normal UK ones are the same as the one in the first picture in the gallery.

Yep.

Definitely the most beautiful entry.

However, designs age, and it's probably best to go with something low key and simple. With that in mind, they probably chose the best design as the winner.

Or better yet: just get rid of them with an underground power grid.

But Pylons are much cheaper and easier to maintain than underground wiring.
i'd rather have pylons protruding from the ground than beautiful landscapes dug up to bury electrical lines.

The best practical design won. All of the other would be too expensive and are over engineered. Nice simple white pylon looks much better than the over sized mechanco kits over the English countryside we currently have.

All unsightly power cables should be run underground.
I could be mistaken but I don't think you can bury 500,000 volt lines cost effectively. That's a lot of potential to control.

It's worth mentioning that they also said they might work with two of the other entries, which were runners up.

The second one is horrendous...

I was somewhat horrified while watching some show on linesmen and the huge high capacity lines when they were saying how the linesman has to make sure not to get too close to the metal frame because there's so much current running through the line that it would arc straight through their body to the frame without their even having to come into physical contact.
