Well, my cat broke her leg.

Inanna

Not pure anymore!
So during a move, an unassembled wardrobe fell upon my cat, Leela, breaking her leg and dislocating her hip. Me and my husband took her to the vet immediately after, and she has been there since. We received a call yesterday, and the vet is going to place a pin in her leg for the non-affordable price of £500. Has anyone experienced something like this before? With a pin in the leg, does the cat loose some mobility or does it eventually come back?

Also, does anyone know any organisations that help with veterinary bills? Because we are really struggling, as we have kind of put off getting insurance, so the bill is sky high (Needless to say we will be getting the insurance now) We have researched and the only thing we could find is the PDSA, which only helps you if you are on benefits. So far we've only managed to borrow £100 from various friends and family, but the vet won't except payment in instalments. So does GAF have any advice? Especially UK GAF. No care-credit over here, sadly.

EDIT: We've met our goal! Thanks to everyone for helping us out! GAF really is amazing! <3 <3

PS: Will be returning every single penny when I have enough funds!

Unfortunately I don't know much about help with vet bills, which is why my cat was cremated and is sitting on my shelf. What I can say though is, it's always a good idea to lock your animals up in a room (bathroom I've found is best) while you're doing your moving. You probably already know this now though. :/

Sorry for your cat/bills.

The UK RSPCA in the UK seems willing to help out with payment stuff, but they do stipulate "if you qualify," which means there might be tight rules on it (I know you had problems with that part).

Did you try calling a local shelter for tips on which vet to go with, Inanna? They might be able to refer you to the cheapest option or trade volunteer work for aid.

You might also be eligible for this: https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pdsa-vet-care/eligibility (added this one too just in case you hadn't checked here yet.)

£500 sounds way too much for just a pin.
I did some googling about, and it seems like the going price is more around the £200 pricepoint.

Whereabouts are you?

:( poor kitty.

However how do you not have the £500. Do you have no savings or emergency funds?.

Not trying to be a dick but £500 is not that much money and if you have a pet than can become injured you should be able to deal with the cost of that injury.

I would try to find a less expensive vet if you can. Worst case, I'd be willing to throw a bit of money your way. I'm in the USA though so I'm not sure how that would work.

Yeah there was a similar thread a short time ago. And again, not trying to dog pile on the op, but pets are a responsibility you have to take seriously in terms of care.

This is what pet insurance is for...

Seems you can get support for the payment though

Better than it losing a leg like my old one did though!

Don't feel bad if you can't pay for it or don't want to. You probably gave the cat a good life and a safe place to live. In the end don't value a cat over your own financial well being

RSPCA are the same as PDSA, that is if you have a low income and are in receipt of benefits you may be eligible for help towards emergency veterinary bills.

Its not just for a pin. There were other things that they had to do before they decided that she needed a pin. The x-rays, vets/nurses time, medication plus the cost of surgery all added up. And they are also planning on keeping her at the surgery for 4 to 5 days in total, so they would be charging for that as well.

it's hard, but this is how i view it.

hope it all works out for the best though

Similar but that cat would have been put down from an infected teeth, if it wasn't removed =/
Hope everything will work out for you OP.

Ah, worried it might be as much. The Blue Cross and Pet Aid organizations listed in the Vet Bill Assistance links might be able to help, though.

Ah, found this too:

UK Vet Bill Assistance: http://www.petloversonline.co.uk/financial.htm

It says it is for people on state benefits, not for students or people that work. :(

Definitely would have been able to if it weren't for the move. All of this happened during a move, and we just rented a property for £550 a month plus £650 deposit. I'm a student up to my eyeballs in debt and work part-time.

Even BC and Pet Aid? I don't think they realize that people on benefits might actually be making more than starving students. ;_;

Ask your university if they have a hardship fund. I know at my university they had it, and I had to get money from it several times.

Really though, you should just cough up the £13 or so a month for cat insurance. If you're so intent on having a pet, at least be willing to put up the money it costs to make sure that you can look after it if these sort of things happen.

I don't know if you can put a donate button on this thread... maybe you can use indiegogo (but they charge a good fee too). But I can understand how hard it would feel to not be able to do anything for your cat. My cat jack had a serious UTI and my mom spent around $500 (or was it $200) on his surgery and he got ran over a month later so it was extremely upsetting for her and she said never again. Then a couple months back my cat Tiny got in a fight with a stray cat and she had a hole in her side where puss would come out for like a month (tried to clean it regularly). Luckily she survived but I had to just watch because I'm a student as well and can't afford these expensive vets in the boonies.

For sure I could donate $10, I'm sorry it's not a lot but if a lot of people chip in you won't stress out a lot about the bill. I hope everything goes well and I'm so sorry about your baby.

£500 is a lot of money. Just have it put down and get a new kitten.

you either never had a pet or I don't really get why...

OP - i'll help you out with a couple of bucks if you pm me your IBAN/BIC codes. can't afford to help much, but i'll do my share if GAF is willing to put together the money needed to save your pet.
that said I too do feel that you should have expected something like this when you got a pet.

My cousins once had a kitten who got ran over. Both of her back legs were ran over and became useless. She had to drag herself using her front paws and struggled getting up the stairs. Her back legs starting rotting. They put her down. ):

Bro, sometimes it's better not to post.

Something similar happened to my other cat Joey (who used to be my sister's but she got rid of him because her husband mysteriously "developed" cat allergies out of the blue...). But he is insured so that took care of it and several other problems he's had over the years. He's had a few problems before as well since he's an outdoor cat, like an abscess right next to his tail, had his eye swell up once both because of cat fights, we try to keep him in but he gets out the moment someone opens the door. I dunno why I put off getting Leela insured, it just slipped my mind. Plus, Leela is so mellow and hates going outside so I didn't think she would have an accident like this. Needless to say I have learnt my lesson and I will be insuring her asap!

We were able to collect just over a £100 and paid it off right away, it was extremely difficult as we are in the middle of a move and had to buy a lot of stuff for the house. The vet has given us a week or so to collect the rest of the funds. If only this had happened a week or so ago, I would have been able to put the move on hold and taken care of this instead. :( Started a fundraiser group on facebook for her using paypal donations, hopefully that would help us a bit. A friend tried to help by giving links to numerous sites and organizations that help with vet bills but they are all based in the US. There is a site for raising funds specifically for pets but that also requires you to be a US resident. :( Anyway, thank you so much for the help. Just started a chipin and here's the link CLICK

Sorry for your cat/bills.

The first sentence made me laugh.

But having owned a cat before that I had to give back to my ex-wife, I will say that I'm sorry and hope you get the assistance you need to help your pet.

Seriously guys, I cannot thank you enough for the support and funds you are sending us. Me and my fiance are quite overwhelmed emotionally with all the support. Again, thank you and keep it coming, you guys are the hottest shit going!

We donated $30, as much as we could, i hope it helps. :)

Thank you, you're a legend! And thanks to everyone who has donated so far!

Leela had her surgery today and we are going to see her tomorrow. The vet said everything went okay but he still wants to keep her for a few days.

I hope the pin doesn't affect her too bad and that she doesn't loose her mobility because of this. :(

Something similar happened to my cat... kinda.

Came home from university one day and noticed that my cat was limping (managed to get out of the house). Took him to the vet and found out that his leg had been crushed. We had a choice of paying $700+AUD to have the leg 'reconstructed' or something, or $300AUD to have it amputated. Because I was tight on money at the time, I had to get it removed. In all honesty he didn't seem to mind - After a few weeks he was hopping around on three legs just fine.

Kinda gone off on a tangent, haha.

I just donated $60. I hope you make your goal. Let us know if you don't or if it's not looking likely.

Just donated $20. Hope you can raise it all! Nothing is worse than having a sick / injured pet.

We donated $30, as much as we could, i hope it helps. :)

I'm in for $50. Swift recovery to your fuzzy one.
And here is another example of GAF's awesomeness!

I hope the mog is OK Inanna, I know how much they mean to you!

Sorry, but what the hell is this? Just use a credit card? And who the hell wants to put their pet down for 500 bucks? I hope to god that you never get a pet

My family was in the same situation. Our cat, which is 10 years old, had a broken tooth and it was infected. The left side of the face was really swollen. We took it to the wet and they said it would cost £350 to fix it. Even if we didn't really have the money at the time, there was no question about it. We used the credit card to pay for it.

Now the cat looks as beautiful as before, worth every penny.

Heck, even if it'd cost £5000, we'd still find a way to pay for it. We love the little fellow too much

Some people really just aren't animal lovers. It doesn't make them bad people!
