Well, my cat broke her leg.

Well, there are some straight up dicks in this thread. I hope you meet your financial goal to fix your kitty <3 I recently lost a pet, and in this situation, it was best to put him down, but this was not before I went online and looked at several vets and made sure 1) That they treat ferrets and 2) That a payment plan was available, because I never have a large sum of money available living by myself off the wages of a supposedly full-time position. I even called around a few different offices to make sure it was an option.

After all is said and done... be careful with your lil ones! I'm sure your fur kid will be okay :)

My cousins once had a kitten who got ran over. Both of her back legs were ran over and became useless. She had to drag herself using her front paws and struggled getting up the stairs. Her back legs starting rotting. They put her down. ):

dude

Sorry, but what the hell is this? Just use a credit card? And who the hell wants to put their pet down for 500 bucks? I hope to god that you never get a pet

My family was in the same situation. Our cat, which is 10 years old, had a broken tooth and it was infected. The left side of the face was really swollen. We took it to the wet and they said it would cost £350 to fix it. Even if we didn't really have the money at the time, there was no question about it. We used the credit card to pay for it.

Now the cat looks as beautiful as before, worth every penny.

Heck, even if it'd cost £5000, we'd still find a way to pay for it. We love the little fellow too much

Okay, read the topic then reply! Like I said a billion times before, if it had happened a week or so ago I would have been able to afford it no problem. AGAIN, I've already spent almost £3000+ on the house that we just got which is why we are really short on the funds. (bolded, underlined and italicized so people would read it...). We had been saving up for the move for a while now. Also, not everyone has 10+ credit cards laying around. My guy has one with a £800 limit that gets used frequently and we already took out most from it to buy furniture plus all the white goods like washing machine and a big fridge, 3 big wardrobes, every little thing. The house was completely unfurnished we had to get every thing for it.

When did I say I was going to have her put down? :(

I hate having to explain myself and I already feel so fucking guilty because it happened while I was out! I keep yelling at my guy blaming him, how did he let it happen, why did he not lock the room where all the heavy stuff was, why didn't he lock her in the bathroom, I should have stayed home etc etc. I love her way too much too that's why I did what I thought I'd never ever would! Put my huuuge pride aside and make a donation page on facebook and put a chipin link here. I freakin' hate it, but I can't do anything else. I used £100 that we had, we raised £107 (which I would pay back when we get paid) that leaves us with £300, and if I can't raise more I will beg everyone I know for Leela.

So during a move, an unassembled wardrobe fell upon my cat, Leela, breaking her leg and dislocating her hip. Me and my husband took her to the vet immediately after, and she has been there since. We received a call yesterday, and the vet is going to place a pin in her leg for the non-affordable price of £500. Has anyone experienced something like this before? With a pin in the leg, does the cat loose some mobility or does it eventually come back?

Also, does anyone know any organisations that help with veterinary bills? Because we are really struggling, as we have kind of put off getting insurance, so the bill is sky high (Needless to say we will be getting the insurance now) We have researched and the only thing we could find is the PDSA, which only helps you if you are on benefits. So far we've only managed to borrow £100 from various friends and family, but the vet won't except payment in instalments. So does GAF have any advice? Especially UK GAF. No care-credit over here, sadly.

One of my cats got run over by a car, his back hip was pretty shattered and the other hip was dislocated, after about 12 months he was pretty much as mobile as he was before it happened.

Another one broke her front leg in an accident, they had to put a metal plate in the leg and after 3 months or so, she was back to normal mobility wise.

So don't worry about it, cats legs can heal remarkably well :)

Sorry to hear this, OP. I wish your cat the most speedy recovery. I can't help financially but I can keep a positive attitude.

Inanna, I'm pretty sure Salsa's opening paragraph was aimed at the non cat lovers in here, not you!

Your grief is clouding your judgment. Take a deep breath...

Sorry, but what the hell is this? Just use a credit card?

You can use your debit card too or your paypal balance if you login.

Ianna- It might be a good idea to put the chipin link on the first post cause it was a little hard finding it. Good luck again and I'm so glad that others are donating too makes you feel all fuzzy inside that people can be nice. Ahh yeah having boy cats are the worst since they need to be outside or they don't want to survive (all the boy cats we've had have been so nasty about that). It was so hard living in apartments and them wanting to be outside cats. You should see the doors in the house all scratched and the carpets torn apart on the bottom. And their wails omg. My cats are the worse. I hop you have a good day : )

Wow this forum, amazing to always see GAFers help out each other in times of need.

Good luck to the kitty, I will try to donate tonight when I get home.

Maybe some nice people here can gift you the money via PayPal and pay them back when you can? I would but I'm broke

I just sent $1.

I know it's not much but I'm a poor student too.

I couldn't bear to think about your cat in pain or being put down, too attached to my own to think of such things.

Hope all goes okay!

If you want to make sure your cat maintains a decent life, you'll have to pay the bill.

Cats are very limber animals. They very rarely break bones naturally, let alone their leg and possibly their hip. Throughout their life, cats need the ability to jump, climb, run, evade quickly.

What I don't understand is how a wardrobe can fall on your cat and break her leg? Not wanting to be mean because there is a lack of empathy by some people, but that was totally irresponsible of you. She should have been crated or been in another room.

I'm an animal person, I love pets, but this is a predicament only you can decide what to do. Is there a guarantee the vet will be successful in repairing the leg? How bad of a break was it? If there is not much chance your cat will be 100% you have to think it through. Their legs, agility are important to them.

I'm sorry this has happened to you though. I hope your pet gets well and you don't put yourself in undue hardship.

At least you are a great person and would rather risk scratches as opposed to cruelly removing their claws.

Jesus christ madness, she wasn't even in the home and the two of them are already guaranteed to feel guilty as hell, and I'm sure her boyfriend has been getting no small share of grief in the aftermath without the internet piling on. Good lord.

Carecredit has saved my butt over here in the states.

I had $16 left in my Paypal and is all I can swing atm I'm afraid. Hope Leela is well. Not the same kind of injury, but for what it's worth, a friend had a cat with a titanium pin in his leg for a good 10 years, it never bothered him.

Same, Carecredit completely saved my ass (and my cat's life) when I had to get him an unaffordable operation. :( Shame it isn't available to her

I wish we had carecredit here too. See, that's the problem most organizations like that are US based and we only get help here if we are on benefits. I never looked into it because I don't want to be on it and I doubt I would qualify as normally we would have enough spare money for something like it. But the move has us totally poor right now. And like I said before, I've had cats all my life, and we've always taken good care of them whenever they got sick.

I dunno what you are trying to imply here... I feel guilty enough as it is and I wish I had an idea how she managed to do it. Most rooms in our previous house didn't have a lock and couldn't be closed properly. Bathroom was the only room that could be but she hated being there even though she has a basket because the floor is really cold. We hadn't started moving stuff yet, it was in around 12 in the morning and I was in at the train station in another city when my guy told me.

And the vet has assured us that the leg would be as good as new (Or very nearly), but obviously it would take a lot of patience and time, not to mention care. I will be visiting her tomorrow and will be sure to take some pics of her, to show you all how she is doing, as we see it too.

And I know I'll sound like a broken record saying this, but me and my fiancee and our baby (Leela :P) really really REALLY appreciate your help, and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your help and support. Thank you all

As promised, pictures of Leela!

When we first got her.

Stick this pic in the first post, Inanna, and add the link there with the info. I think it's kind of hard for people to track it down now that there have been more posts.

I don't think she needs to be told time and time again about what to do. accidents do happen. I slighty stepped on the paw of my cat last week, never even felt her presence. she was fine.

Gave a little bit too, hope she gets well soon. Best of luck! Plz keep us updated.

Edit: Oh and what Norante said for me too, don't worry about returning it, glad I can help a little.

£500 is a lot of money. Just have it put down and get a new kitten.

I'd donate to have insensitive halfwits removed from this thread.

EDIT: Oh and here is the ChipIn link, in case you want to help. And thanks to everyone who has chipped in so far!

PS: Will be returning every single penny when I have enough funds!

Sent you a little contribution. Don't worry about returning it – when the time comes, pass the favor along to others in need. Best of luck.

I donated $10.00. I wish it could be more but sadly funds are tight for me :(. No need to pay it back. Best of luck to you and your kitty <3

Right, went to visit Leela this evening. Finally saw the x-rays and the invoice for the surgery, x-rays and whatnot. Said that it would cost around £500 in all, actually turned out being £605 :/ The vet included the worming stuff for the kittens on the same invoice for some reason, even though we paid for it there and then using the scant dough left on my guy's debit card, and then deducted it in the total... odd!

Now I regret going to them, but these guys were closer than the one we usually use for check-ups and so on, and me and my guy wanted to get her to a vet ASAP. Leela seems to be doing ok, and the vet is really impressed by how she is coping. Still her same old mellow self.

X-ray (Before):
He couldn't access the after x-rays because of some problem with the company's intranet or something like that.

Invoice #1 + Invoice #2

We have raised £214.85 + £100 already paid, £284 more to go... :\ Dunno if we would be able to raise that much, but many thanks to everyone who has chipped in so far, and to those who have shown their support. You guys n' gals are fuckawesome!!

Yeah, I had no problem with the wailing since I had my headphones on. It makes me wonder why a lot of people decide to have pets in the first place if that can't stand things like cat scratches or interacting with their pets/ not keeping them kooped up in the garage 24/7.

Inanna- Don't pay me back! It was hardly anything and you'll be in the same position paying people back! So don't pay the one: bliss-blahblahblah@gmail ever or I'll be very mad D8<
But goodluck I hope if bumps up a little more. We should start bumping the thread with all out cat pictures so more people can see and chip in lol.

I don't really have any money but I'd send some over to help the poor kitty if I did. I do have about 2 dollars..but I don't know how to send to the UK.

Donated! I hope your kitty's recovery goes well~

My sister's cat recently had an incident that caused a large vet bill too, so I know how it can be a huge pain when something unexpected comes up like that.

Figured now was the best time to finally make a first post :)

Donated! I hope for the best for your lil buddy!

Wait, what is wrong with removing cats claws if its an indoor cat? How does it affect them?

Edit: I'm talking about trimming the claws.... Is that what you guys mean?

Are you talking about just clipping the end off every few months so they are not as sharp? Or actually cutting them so they never grow long again.

The first is fine, as it's just like using a fingernail clipper. The other is bad. Going beyond the tip would be like cutting part of your fingers off.

Getting a cat is not exactly the same like getting a kid. Sometimes people take cats into their house because they would get thrown in a river or something like that otherwise. And some of these people dont happen to have the luxury of spending what could be their monthly rent on a cat. Most of these people gave their cat probably a better life than they would have had without them.

Now i did spend alot of money on my 14 year old Retriever but i could afford it. If i knew i needed that money for food/rent whatever i would have had him put down.

In the end they're just animals. Does not mean you shoulld not care for them, but going in debt is stupid.

Yeah, they grow back. We're taking him to the vet when they get too long

Got me worried for awhile :p

Sorry to hear about your cat. Mine suffered a similar injury in June 2011, they had to put his leg in a splint and he had to be kept in-doors for nearly 6 months. He was mostly back to his old self after that period however he still has a minor limp which will never go away. He also may fail to jump small heights but that is kinda rare.

Still haven't ascertain how he got the injury though, surely if he was hit by a car the damage would be more serious, same goes for a dog attack. I think some cruel cunt stood on his leg or something, had a few ideas who did it and was nearly going to kick their door down after we got the diagnosis from the vet that calmed me down a bit.
