Well shit... so apparently i'm not typing properly.

I use both hands and all 4 fingers on each. Is that home key? I type approx 100 wpm and do not need to look at the keyboard.

How old are you..how have you never heard of home row..

Home row sucks but apparently your style sucks more. My custom style would never lose to home row.

I suck at typing and want to improve but refuse to learn by any method other than Typing of the Dead.

I wish they'd release it for Mac. I have iTunes credit, just put in the damn app store.

I only use my pinkies for shift and enter

is that bad

Well, the only other keys you would be pushing with them is AQZ, and how often do you use Q and Z? My Left Pinky is more or less always on the A key, and will go for left shift when need. The right one tends to just float around unless it goes for the Enter/Right shift.

I taught myself how to type correctly in high school and I'm so glad I did. Being able to type without having to look at the keyboard or the monitor is awesome. It's worth your time to learn.

wow, I am slow as shit. 17 wpm with 100% accuracy. I think I'm slightly faster typing my own thoughts instead of what I'm told to write but still :(

I remember in middle school that we had typing lessons included in our computer course, most of us got up to the high 50s or 60s, there was one girl though, she could get up to 120, absolutley blew us away.

On a good day I can average around 50 or 60.

I use every finger since I was taught home row based touch typing in 7th grade (or maybe 8th, I can't remember now). How much wrist movement must you be doing if you're only using your pointer and middle fingers of each hand? My wrists tend to not move very much at all, the only time I notice it is when I reach for the 'y' with my right pointer finger.

I'm soooo glad I decided to take that semester class in middle-school, I honestly cannot imagine having never learned how to type properly.

I keep thinking of trying to learn one of the non-QWERTY keyboard layouts, but I can never decide which one.

Never really thought about it before, but I suppose I do think less of people who look at the keyboard.

For those who are using two or three fingers, does that mean you're constantly looking at the keyboard and away from the screen?

Uh... no. Why would it? I type using only the index finger on my left hand, and my index and middle finger on my right (primary) hand. I couldn't even tell you what fingers I used until I practiced typing something and paid particular attention.

Typing is complete second nature; instinctual at this point. I type crazy fast (just tried an online test for the hell of it - 95 words per minute with no mistakes), accurately, and never look at the keyboard.

I started off with the "home keys" however now I can place my hands anywhere and not have it affect my WPM due to memorizing where each key is.

Can't find the keyboard .gif that someone posted in the Xbox hype tread. :(

I like to roam around the keyboard, personally.

When I first took a computer typing class I was getting the hang of typing the proper way. Then my stupid teacher started piling on so many pages that I had to revert back to my shitty ways to keep up and get the busy work done. That type of thing seems to be typical of the modern schooling system. I have been typing wrong ever since, although at a half way decent speed considering.

Yeah, I never learned proper home row placement either, and I type at about 75 WPM.

I'm content with that.

The other day I was reading about touch typing and I was like, "hey, I wonder if I can do that." Lo and behold I could. When I first started using computers maybe 5-6 years ago my typing was with two index fingers, now my fingers fly over the keyboard without a thought. Funnily enough because I have no formal training I don't have the positions right, my hands just hover over the board.

I think I naturally either drift into the home placement or WASD but I mostly use my index and middle fingers to do all the typing and my left thumb on space, just fuck all that.

Might explain why I type like shit and make a shitload of spelling errors

I can't write properly either. Just took a quick online test and apparently I type 69 words per minute using my method. I see no need to improve that and I never look at the keyboard either.

The "proper" way has always seemed like madness to me.

Just took a random typing test and got 108 words per minute, so I'm doing pretty good without it.

Never heard about "home row" but we call it 10-finger-typing. Basically you have the index fingers on F and J. The thing is, I can't really type unless I have two hands on the keyboard :P

I'm in the same boat as you, OP. I got "proper" typing instruction in middle school but by that point I had already taught myself by "chicken pecking". I'm aware that it's inefficient but it's how I learned. It's part of my thought process while typing now. I feel like it's too late to make home key typing second nature.

My right hand only uses the index finger for typing and the right pinky for shift key, while my left hand basically roams over most of the keyboard and uses every finger except for the pinky. Basically my right hand controls all the keys to the right of Y-H-B and my left hand does everything else, it's a really weird typing style. One hand uses all the fingers and one hand only uses one finger, haha.

A lot of the traditional typing standards are completely fucking stupid, such as the "correct" method of typing the lower-row of letters on the left. (See me make an entire thread on GAF to complain about it!)

Home row is a useful tool when learning to touch type, but once you know where the keys are it doesn't particularly matter - so long as you center your index fingers on F and J every now and again you're not going to get lost.

No idea what my WPM is, but I can type at just about the same speed someone can talk, so I don't see the need to worry about it. I tried worrying about it a while ago and then gave up.

Yeah, you're typing wrong lol.

I don't know how people that don't use the home row don't rip their hair out. In my Web Site Design class I was the only person I saw using the home row, and as a result my projects were completed much faster than everyone else. Insanity.

Even in my Programming class, there were very few people using the home row. We're talking about a fucking programming class here, and people don't use the home row. I just don't know how they deal.

Edit: and typing essays is a breeze. I was watching my friend type up a second draft for his Comp 109 class (he did awful in high school lol) and he was typing so slow it was painful for me to watch. I had to take over for him and got in done in a fraction of the time it would have taken him.

Seriously people, LEARN HOW TO TYPE PROPERLY. It's so worth it.

Unscripted, I believe I can type around 85-90WPM. If I'm retyping something, I get around 75WPM. My typing is pretty ordinary, home row and all. I took keyboarding class Freshman year in high school, and practiced on my own during my sophmore and junior year in high school. The only thing I do that's out of the ordinary is I use my right index to type 'B,' for some reason.
