Jesus that lady tossed her own salad.

For gym newbies: read a the book 'Starting Strength'. It's currently on its third edition, it's available on Kindle for 9.99, and it'll tell you everything you need to be a more effective gym-goer than 90% of those who are there.

It's not perfect, but it's damn good.

Honestly, this stuff is important. If you think about how much time people spend on things like going to school for an elective in medieval history and then don't bother to learn the first thing about their own health, then their priorities are WAY out of whack.

Make it happen right away!

I was driving through the gym parking lot and this other vehicle was going down the wrong side and almost hit me...so I shouted some vulgarities and thought nothing of it. I parked, went inside, and started my routine.

I was laying on the bench when this huge black guy bent right over me and yelled for me to get up, which I did. Turns out the vehicle belonged to the same guy. He started cursing at me, asked me if I wanted to finish what I started outside, and promptly shoved me so hard I fell backwards over the bench. As soon as I hit the ground, this equally giant bald guy, who I later discovered was a skinhead, ran over and helped me up and started getting in the face of the guy who shoved me. They exchanged insults which turned into shoves which eventually turned into punches. A couple of trainers had to break them up.

No one really won. I never went back to that gym, though.
Damn. I try to avoid yelling anything while driving but I understand your frustration at the time. Lots of bad drivers out there. It's good that you weren't involved in anything more than than the initial shove.

I wish they had weights there. I just ended up doing push-ups and sit-ups in a corner. Hopefully my push up skillz overshadowed the fact that I had no idea what I was doing. I used to go to a gym that had weights, but it ended up being too expensive.

You can do bodyweight exercises at home, if none of your local gyms have free weights then its a waste of time.

I agree with you on this!

I just began exercising regularly and stick to machines mostly because they have shorter weights typically and don't require a spotter ( I know some people don't need a spotter, but I'm too clumsy not to have one)

I'm staying for the gifs

I used to go to the gym but only because of some mandatory physical shit needed to graduate high school. I didn't encounter any problems with the equipment since there's instructions on the side.

Is this a typical first time at the gym experience or should I have probably known how to use them?

Haha no, I don't think it is, and I feel like they're pretty straight forward.

I do wish I could have seen you. I would probably have laughed, but also offered help. But also laughed.

Honestly, for first time gym goers I would recommend a personal trainer for the first couple of times, until you get to know what you are actually doing.

Machines are no fun.

Just do barbell work. Look up the press, bench press, and squat to get started. You'll have to use some coordination, but when it's just you and the bar, you'll know exactly what you're trying to do with it.

Some are fine (and fun), like the hack squat machine.

Thing is, I didn't really say anything that bad. I think I yelled something like, "What the hell are you doing?!", but I don't think I called him anything. I think he was looking for a fight; he was way more aggressive than he needed to be. I was there for maybe 4 or 5 minutes before he confronted me so it's obvious that he went right into the gym looking for me.

I really hate going to the gym when it's crowded. I actually hate the gym in general. I wish that premium equipment was less premium in price.

You also feel like a boss when you're doing power cleans, and someone happens to walk into the room and see you hit that shit CRISP....making it look effortless. Good stuff.

Yeah, my gym never used to be that crowded, but it came under new ownership and, good for them, I guess, more people have signed up recently.

We have two squat racks in that gym, and when I see people doing curls, or putting a bench under them....grrrrrrr.

I once had a big black guy – he probably had 120 lbs. on me easy – try to kick my ass (long story), but a neo-Nazi came to my rescue. They fought. There was blood. The cops were called. I was a witness.
Da fuck did I just read?

At almost all of the posted gifs. Can people really be that stupid??? I have seen some wird stuf when going to a gym but damn.

I find all of the machines pretty straightforward. But If one is not sure about it why not just ask or sneak peak at other people using the machines.

In all seriousness, I've quite a few cases of people at my gyms that don't properly use machines and weights. For the most part, it's not my place to offer advice if someone doesn't request it.

However, if I see that someone has the potential to injure themselves or someone nearby, then I always try to help them avoid any injuries.

I joined a gym 2 weeks ago. I'm 39 years old and this is the first time I've ever joined. I haven't been inside a locker room since 6th grade.

The part I still haven't gotten used to, is all the flying penis floating around the locker room. I'm not used to seeing grown people not giving a fuck, sitting on a bench with their dicks out, just chilling and having conversations.

It's usually the older group.

Ask one of the guys working there and they will probably give you a quick tour of all the machines for a small amount.

Otherwise you will end up like this

That second one would be my brother in law, he does the worst curls I've ever seen and then brags about the weight. The third guy is just LOL.

Edit: after seeing crossfit guy, that's my brother in law.
