We're all living in 'Murica

But we're not sorry.

ITT: lots of people that don't any anything outside of media portrayals of America acting like authorities on the subject, and lots of people that don't know anything outside of media portrayals of Europe acting like authorities on the subject.

So what I've learned from this thread is that one of the best ways to tease Europeans and actually get a reaction is to not point out the traditional mocking stereotypes but instead to pretend like all major political, cultural, and scientific achievements are American and that Europeans don't have a sense of humor due to their lack of self-deprecating humor stemming from a perceived lack of confidence (even though it isnt true in most cases).

The trouble is that it's hard to tell which posters are pretending and which are just delusional.

GTAVI is set in Norway, but instead of avoiding prison the goal is to get inside one. Prison life is such a cushy joke, it's just considered winning the game to get there.

You just described segregated groups of people in general.

It's like watching a film or TV from the eighties and thinking that's what it was really like living in that decade. When actually that's just what movies and TV were like back then and had little to do with reality.

And also the best ways to get a reactions out of Americas is to ad hominem attack them and act as if you are not. Just look at the the thread title "Murica" and the picture being used but as usual it is European that end up crying about Americans not respecting them and their contributions to the world or whatever the fuck they always end up crying about half way through any thread they start off trying to coyly attack Americans.

This is the greatest representation of 'Murica, right here.

Blonde hair, blue eyes, trucker hat and jeans. Sportin' red white and blue too. All 100% 'murican.

My point, is that I really like 90s 'murican stereotypes.

Greatest representation of Murica would be

Remember, he is Canadian.

Its kind of a new setting where the idea of 'Murica coming to fruition in the mid to late 00s. There have been plenty stereotypes of America in older games, but none with quite the precision of GTA5 and SR4.

OP has been in a hyperbolic time chamber the last half decade.

Britain :p

The Housers are English, and Les Benzies is Scottish. The team are from all over the UK, and probably the rest of the world given the general nature of the industry at that level.

Perhaps, none of which alters the fact it was made in Scotland. If you want to get technical about the nationalities who created the game then pretty much every game created is made by a league of nations.

I usually see the reverse. I don't think there are too many Bible-thumping 'Murica types on Neogaf, but lots of non-U.S. who are looking to destroy someone who is like that.

but yeah, like...everything is everthing

I went to America for a holiday a couple of years ago, and met a bunch of very pleasant people.

None of you were them

Love,
spirity

It would have to be some type of high brow indy game. The fact of the matter is the average American consumer gives less than two fucks about what goes down in Europe and wouldn't be able to identify with any Eurocentric social commentary that was being made.

Well, you could have a FIFA version with fans throwing bananas in the general direction of black players, for a start.

;)

Hmm, you seem to be offended.

You act like other countries don't have their fair share of stereotypes in video games. I'm sure Russians and middle-eastern countries are completely okay with being constantly portrayed as the bad guys in military shooters. As far as [the rest of] Europe goes, I'm sure as gaming grows they will get their share.

At least we aren't seeing WW2 games being pumped out every 3-6 months anymore so your "average gamer" can get his or her fix of pumping Germans full of bullets 24/7.

For all the clamors about a change of scenery, would other Europeans enjoy a game about French stereotypes as much?

I dunno, in a different media format, monty python did fairly well for its self. I'm sure a benny hill stylized setup could work as well. (I'm going fairly light hearted here intentionally)

Not offended at all. I just find it all a little ironic and wonder if it would be the same thing if China suddenly became the next big thing or anywhere else. Would it be the exact same reaction eventually? I really want to see a GTA game set abroad. I want variety and to feel like I'm exploring a parody of a different culture.

Believe me, most of us think L.A. is a shit-hole for a reason...lol
I honestly don't see the china ship sailing anytime soon in a serious fashion. Even games like WoW avoided putting pandas in games for a long time because of china existing as a large potential user base. Walking on broken glass as it were.

It would be nice if less games would be set in America. I mean do the people in charge of marketing really believe we won't play games if they aren't set in the Ol' US of A?
I dunno maybe I'm alone but I'm bored of the setting, and if I play one more game set in New York I'm going to stab someone in the eye with a Reuben.
