Were the DS Kingdom Hearts games any good?

I was very pleasantly surprised by Re: Coded when I played it. I'd heard a lot of negatives about the game but really enjoyed it. The combat is fun but the story has you going through a computer simulation of the original game, which means the same damn worlds again.

Haven't tried 358/2 Days yet.

358/2 has decent combat. Re:Coded has awesome combat with a shit story where the only relevant thing is the final cutscene.

358/2 days is crap. I was severely disappointed by it, especially since Roxas and his scenario at the beginning of KH2 is what made me like the game. I hated KH1, but at my friend's request, I played 2. I loved how it started off and it made me excited to play through all of KH2.

So I was pretty pumped when I heard Roxas was getting his own game. It's so dreadful, full of terrible writing (even by Kingdom Hearts standards). It controls poorly and it looks bad.

I rather liked the 3DS game though

I've only played 358/2 Days.

It was pretty fun, and it was cool to work with some of the members of the Organization. Only problem I had with the game, was the camera. It was really bad sometimes. I always lost my enemies, even with lock-on on.

Both are decent. They won't blow you away, but they aren't upsettingly bad, either. Days in particular fleshes out some of the characters and gives more information about the time between KH1 and 2, but both stories aren't 100% critical to the overall arc in the same way 3D/BBS/1/2 are, IMO.

I've been told to skip them and just play dream drop distance and birth by sleep, but I haven't got around to actually trying any yet.

Re:coded is good but it is a very obvious retread. I still enjoyed it.

I didn't enjoy 358/2 days or whatever at all.

Coded has better combat than 358/2 Days, likely thanks to the influence from Birth by Sleep's superior combat system.

The 3DS game has a better battle system than both DS games. (The stories in all three games are pretty wacky though, particularly the 3DS one)

If you're not a fan of the KH series, you probably wouldn't enjoy the games themselves very well. But if you just wanna play for the combat, and the 3DS one isn't an option, I'd go with Coded (although multiplayer missions were pretty fun in Days).

358/2 Days is less than okay but still playable. Don't expect it to get better the further you play it though.
I have not played Re:coded.

The 3DS game is loads better than the DS games combined.

I havent played Re:Coded but 358/2 days had some interesting gameplay systems tied to poor structure and pacing. The last chunk of the game really grabbed me, and it probably helped that by then there wasnt any shitty "investigation" missions

I had fun with them both, despite the insipid stories. I knew what I was getting into though.

They were also amazing examples of DS games you didn't think were possible. They kind of blew me away at the time, technically.

358/2 was okay, but I found the controls to be cumbersome at best. If you really want the story line though, just watch the "HD" cutscenes from the KH HD 1.5 ReMix.

Birth by Sleep, on the otherhand, was an excellent game, and I highly recommend that. :)

I felt both DS games were atrociously bad. Like holy crap Nomura WTF were you thinking? How the hell do you go from KH2 to this? :/

this is basically my thoughts.... I haven't gotten around to actually playing the 3ds game yet, but the demo was at least way way better than the DS versions.... Birth by sleep was a solid handheld KH game though.

They're definitely the worst games of the series. But I guess if you want some hack-n-slash combat, it's decent. 358/2 Days's pacing though, feels very slow. It's like a 30 hour game that should have been 10 hours. There tons of quests but it most feels like filler. I actually enjoyed Re:Coded more. Better combat and it's not as padded out.

I heartily recommend Dream Drop Distance and Birth by Sleep over the DS games, which I think don't do well to represent the franchise. BBS is going to be getting a console release later this year iirc. Don't miss out on it, OP!

Re:Coded's combat is really underrated, I feel. It's a fun twist on what BBS did, and in some ways manages to surpass that. Re:Coded relied on gimmicks for its worlds, which were decent. Hallow Bastion (where you play a passive role and send Donald and Goofy out to kick ass) and the Hercule's Colosseum (which plays like a Mario RPG) were high points in that sense.

358/2 was ok enough. The biggest tip I always give people is to play it in small doses, (ie a few missions a session). Do NOT rush 358/2 or it will almost certainly bore you. The story near the end is pretty cool, by KH standards, but it takes a long time to get there.

358/2 is boring as hell and Recoded is yet another repeat of the story from KH1. The positives do not outweigh the negatives. Watch playthroughs.

No, don't bother OP. DS KH games are steaming piles of shite.

PSP KH on the other hand, that game is really good.

If you like the way games play on ds, and look on ds, then 358/2 and re:coded are good games mechanically. And they have good soundtracks. Re: has just about no plot till the end, other than a weird frame tale. IMO, 358/2 has a great, emotional story. I loved it. Some don't. It isn't über important in the grand scheme of things, but is a nice story, and gives some interesting hints if you look for them.

Also I personally rank 358/2 as my favorite ds game of all time. I might be crazy, but I love kh, and it's a game worthy of the name to me.

I should add that for a person like OP who claims to want to play for the gameplay, KH: RE Coded is perfect for that. No one ever really knocks on the gameplay of Recoded (after all, it's pretty much a modified version of the gameplay in BBS). It's the story, or lack of story rather, that people dislike.

2 times I tried to play 358/2 days, first time I dropped it after 2 hours, second time after 30mins. The game is just unbearable boring, I don't understand the logic of making a portable game so freaking slow. Having mandatory tutorials is not a good thing, they taking more than 30min is a show of incompetence in game designing by itself, they taking more than 2 hours in a portable game is unbelievably stupid.

Edit:
Now I remembered one thing, since the main KH team is working on Final Fantasy XV, the "mobile" team is the one developing KH III, this "mobile" team is the team that worked on the DS titles? Does anyone know which team worked on BbS?

This post is probably the most honest and reasonable as far as opinions on 358/2 days goes.

I appreciated Days for what it was. Roxas story wasn't really plot moving,
nor Xions'
, but overall it was alright for its time. The combat was flashy and the way you could lay your skills in the grid created many different builds to use. Also the Co-op mode was something I actually wanted to see in the HD Remix because it was quite fun to experience the unique powers of the Organization XIII and some others
i.e. DQ wielding Mickey
. But yeah ymmv dependent upon what you look for in a KH game. Story is okay, combat is okay, game is okay.

If you are going for the gameplay, I think the 3D for 3DS is the best among all the portable KH titles.

358/2 Days gameplay is abit tedious if you're planning to do all the sidequests.
But I thought the story is really good as it tells you what the hell Organization XIII is actually doing behind the shadows and it shows you what kind of character the rest of the members are.

And the ending...oh man, it was totally unexpected to me.
I'd recommend playing Re-Chain Of Memories & 358/2 Days back-to-back.

The team that made Re:CoM, BBS and DDD are making KH3. The guys who worked on Days/Re:Coded are a totally separate team and not part of SE.

The KH3 team is the team that made BBS/3D both. They didn't do 358/2 days, and they helped a little in re:coded, I think?

//Gah, got ninja'd :D. But teah, that basically.

Wouldn't recommend 358/2 days, like most here I couldn't bring myself to finish it because of how slow it's pacing was.
The combat wasn't my fav either.

Action combat doesn't fare well on DS, imo. Plus, 358/2 and Re;Coded were basically outsourced spinoffs, while BBS and DDD are from the real deal. Play those.

Yet it still wasn't as good as Birth By Sleep.

Well, no combat in the history of combats is, was, or ever will, so, yeah.

Yes, I thought they were both phenomenal as DS games go. If you enjoy Kingdom Hearts, I don't doubt you'll enjoy them, especially since at this stage they must go for pennies on the dollar.

Birth By Sleep and KH2 Final Mix are fantastic.

Yep, those two are my favorites, which is why KH2.5 HD is going to be a pretty amazing experience.

KH3D is number 3 though in terms of gameplay, I really enjoyed the combat, it was a ton of fun.
Did not care for the story however. Inclusion of TWEWY characters was pretty freaking cool though.

I honestly can't say I'd replay 358/2 Days anytime soon. I haven't played it since I finished it near launch. It's the only KH title I haven't played to 100% completion. I'm not really sure why. Roxas is my favorite KH character, and I liked the story at the core of the game, so it wasn't that I was uninterested. Then again, I did just watch the HD cutscenes from 1.5 not too long ago. I'm sure that with time I'd like to go back to it someday. It's such a shame the game didn't get the full remake they initially planned (right?) for the HD collection, with the right time and resources, I'm sure it would have been amazing.
