Were the DS Kingdom Hearts games any good?

358/2 is kinda bad for a multitude of reasons.

That being said I put like 60 hours into it. Im a sucker for handheld action games and Roxas is my favorite character in KH, so at the time I dug it.

I've only played 358/2 Days. By the time Re:Coded released I was tired of KH handheld spin-offs and the NDS, so I didn't play it.

358/2 Days it's decent though. It isn't anything mindblowing but the story was decent enough (I've never had any problem with KH story, even if I know its... kinda special) to keep my interest and it was fun to play the "Arena" thing with Riku / Mickey (there is a mode you can play with most characters of the KH franchise, not Roxas).

It's a 6 game tbh. But if you want it to kill some time you'll have fun.

The team that made Re:CoM, BBS and DDD are making KH3. The guys who worked on Days/Re:Coded are a totally separate team and not part of SE.

The fact that BBS developers (Team Osaka) are making KH3 gives me some hope. Hope it'd be really good and hope it'll release before 2020.

Re:coded is actually the only Kingdom Hearts I've played to the end and the only one I've liked. Mostly because the story and cutscenes are close to non existent, has an attractive combat system and constantly throws you new mechanics in the face. It helped a lot to the pace of the game and was really refreshing even if some of them were so-so (those platform sections were awful), but as the game itself, they don't overstay their welcome.

If you care more about learning about Roxas's life than about good gameplay (which is a legitimate position to hold, though not one I share) you'll like 358/2 Days, but if you don't care about the story in games and are looking for fun ARPG combat it's not going to hold your interest.

Re:Coded is a blast on the other hand but doesn't really have a story to tell.

I was on the train the other day and saw a girl playing a Kingdom Hearts game on an NDS. It had a turn based boss battle and then it switched to a normal 3D KH after it was over. I was thoroughly intrigued by this. Apparently that's Re:coded so I just ordered it. It seems like whether or not it is good is being debated in this thread, but I think I'll like it based on the comments.

358/2 Days missions are HORRIBLE AND ANNOYING. It made me hate Wonder Land, Agrabah and ESPECIALLY Never Land. Holy shit.

I enjoyed it mostly for Multiplayer (which is somewhat restricted unless if you 100% teh game first hand. And I also enjoyed the story. wish you could of used the other organization members in the campaign.

Re:Coded is MUUUUUCH better. The enemies sometimes pull of some bullshit scenarios....but then again I was playing on the hardest difficulty.

Thats in the Colesium/Hercules world. Was one of the better moments of the game.

Re:coded is really fun, I hope you enjoy it! Definitely one of my favorites to play, alongside KH2.

Yes! It's only bad to people because it wasn't on console. It's super good. Days was my favorite but I think the recoded cutscenes in 2.5 are gonna be better. Im more excited for that

358/2 Days has a great story, but pretty terrible combat.
Re:Coded has great combat, but a garbage story apart from its final scene.

Dream Drop Distance has the best combat in the series apart from KH2 Final Mix (Yes, even better than Birth by Sleep) and you won't have any idea what's going on in KH3 if you don't know its story

Birth by Sleep is just as important story wise as Dream Drop Distance, and its combat is nearly as good (or better, it depends on who you ask)

Both Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance have new worlds while neither 358/2 Days or Re:Coded does

A Kingdom Hearts game with Re:coded's combat and 358/2 Days story along with 4-5 new worlds would be a superb amazing game. As they are they are 8/10 good games or 7.5/10 if you're burnt out on the series or never liked it that much to start with

They were ok. Re: Coded was the best gameplay wise, but the story is like another retread of the first game. I liked Days' story, but the gameplay was kinda weak.

*sighs*

Shoot Lock, D-Link, and Command Styles/Finishers are way better (and better-integrated) than FlowMotion, Horrible Pokemon Friends, and Horrible Pokemon Friend Limit Breaks.

I'd say the one thing DDD definitely does better than BBS is the use of non-Command Deck customization (like double jump/glide/specific types of blocks and dodges) doing a really good job of differentiating the two playable characters, whereas outside of Counter Hammer and the assorted difference in dodge animations/frames/mobility BBS didn't do as good a job of that.

I didn't really care for Shoot Lock, and the D-Link System was kinda cool, but really just gave you access to commands you couldn't get otherwises. I found the FlowMotion System really enjoyable.

As for the Dream Eaters I've poured hours upon hours into Pokemon and the Dream Eater System was probably my favorite thing about 3D. I got every Dream Eater and maxed out all their Command Boards and doing so was an absolute joy.

I'm not sure but it felt like 3D has more commands than Birth by Sleep and like you said both Riku and Sora felt really different. I liked that the Dark Commands were exclusive to Riku and the Light Commands were (mostly) exclusive to Sora. It made sense and made both characters feel different.

I'm not the biggest fan of 358/2 Days outside of it's customization system and some surprisingly decent boss fights (Antlion & Leechgrave in particular). I'd say Re:Coded's probably the more enjoyable game to play through, though. The plot's pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but it adapts Birth by Sleep's command deck to the DS controls surprisingly well, and it's level progression/customization system is an interesting mashup of the progression/leveling systems found in 358/2 Days, The World Ends With You, and even a hint of Final Fantasy X.

It doesn't.

I think Birth by Sleep handled character diversity a lot better too, tbh. In 3D, Riku feels like a slightly less versatile mashup of Aqua and Terra, and Sora plays like Ventus, minus the crazy movement options that the latter could employ.

Quick Summary:

358/2 Days: Just pressing Attack, Attack, Attack, Attack, finish.
Re Coded: Decent difficulty, Decent System. Good.
