Were you happy with this generation's graphics?

But seriously, I think that the evolution of the hardware is a matter of money, not really because we "demand" more horse power.

Today console games are ok. We have lots of titles that has great graphics. And we can have more, but it's business, so...

Er...not if VR has anything to say about it. Still a "rumor" but with Oculus being a thing for Scorpion it absolutely is a demand. Neo will certainly help psvr too. It's not like Sony is hurting on the sales and install base front either but here we are.

Nope. This is the first gen in a long time here consoles were less powerful than PC's from the get go. I barely touch my consoles except for the occasional exclusive, even then I just wish it was on PC so i could have a better version of it.

I think so, yes. Of course I like to look at the best possible graphics, but it is definitely not the main point to sell me to a game, that's why N3DS is already one of my favorite platforms.

Besides, I think some games, such as as Halo 5 or inFamous SS, looks pretty damn great! =)

I see no need to simply release a stronger hardware for the sake of better graphics or performance right now. I only think it may be a good idea if they plan, with it, to change how the console system works to something like Steam Machine: hardwares being released with different specs according to what the consumer may afford, and the games will be always backwards and forwards compatible, as long as the hardware has enough power to run it. In other words: that I can buy a game today, and still play it in future generations without needing to worry about backwards compatibility or some re-release bullshit to make me pay for it again.

Visually they are good but this gen and previous generations started with bluff. Killzone and motor storm CGI raised my expectation to sky. Then watch dogs and witcher 3 did the same. Games look really good when you see uncharted 4, ryse or ratchet and clank. But since my expectation went to sky because of watch dogs I am not impressed anymore.

Yes.

Personally I'd be happy with a 5-10% reduction of graphics with those resources refocused on quality assurance and netcode/servers. Too many games front-load and it shows in areas of FPS, stability, gameplay shortfalls etc.

It's one thing I highly commend Nintendo on for decades, they generally have insane levels of first party quality assurance.

By and large, I wasn't impressed with this generation's visuals. It never felt like a big step forward. There were a few games (Uncharted 4 stands out) that indicated advancement, but generally-- it felt more like a half-step forward, like Gen7.5.

I'm still waiting for another leap forward like I felt with the Dreamcast in 1999. Maybe it won't happen.

uncharted 4 while blowing me away visually, game looked so good, i had water in my eyes a lot of the times, kinda hurt my eyes after extended sessions, I'm not sure how much more better you can get aside from uppping the framerate to 60 fps, etc

Don't think i'll be getting Neo or Scorpio, I'm satisfied with the current visuals, art direction remain king. But I am interested to see the differences of these mid console upgrades provide with better framerate and ofcourse making VR games run better. Honestly these incentives don't matter to me, but it can change once i see actual footage.

I will be getting NX if it means nintendo games can finally have good IQ and no more jaggies with current gen ps4 level of textures, etc as that is a big upgrade from a wii u, enough incentive for me to get one.

I find myself caring less about graphics now tbh. Almost all games on the current systems and future ones will at least look good and be capable of looking pretty. I don't worry about graphics too much anymore. Uncharted looks stunning though, and the Witcher looks amazing on PS4.

Is this thread from the middle of June 2016? New consoles haven't even been announced, much less confirmed for fall. I expected more originally in A.I. and level destruction but then found out details on the CPUs. Graphically and performance wise they were fine.

Yes.
Except Halo 5
Halo 5 is the single ugliest AAA console exclusive in a very long time.
shit texture filtering, jaggies everywhere, pop in, 30 fps animations just a short distance away from the player, low res skyboxes... an absolute disappointment

I've been happy since the Dreamcast so I guess I was happy.

I'm still waiting for another leap forward like I felt with the Dreamcast in 1999. Maybe it won't happen.

Yep, this was prob the last gen that legitimately blew my socks off for graphics. VR was the next biggun but for obv different reasons re: immersion. The next big wow will probably be a marriage between the effects we take for granted in 2d games now in VR. Not sure if standard 2d will ever really blow me away again.

Overall a little disappointed. Would have rather paid a little more for more powerful systems. New units can't get here soon enough IMO.

Since all signs are pointing to generations as we knew them ending, questions like this are about to be irrelevant.

But yes, yes I have.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the newer consoles were just for increased resolutions and VR? I figured the devs would keep graphics the same.

Seems silly to make these machines worthless already.

Disappointed... First gen where consoles were already behind PC counterparts. Yeah some games look great thanks to mostly artwork but amount of non 1080p games is sad.

What's disappointing to me is that console game screenshots are so hyperanalyzed and discussed so vociferously that 60 frames is always second to making sure screens look as good as possible.

I'm more disappointed in the low amount of exclusives. I sold my PS4 once the Neo news started pouring in and if it weren't for Persona 5 I wouldn't even be tempted to buy a non-nintendo console.

Graphics are fine. Performance is atrocious. I don't even care about 60fps for most titles, but it's unbelievable that most titles can't even be stable 30.

Nope. This is the first gen in a long time here consoles were less powerful than PC's from the get go. I barely touch my consoles except for the occasional exclusive, even then I just wish it was on PC so i could have a better version of it.

Meh, $1000 enthusiast GPU didn't exist before, people are just willing to drop that much now so there is a market for it. Besides, PCs have no bearing on what dictates a big leap. Only the relative performance of the predecessor compared to the successor. Also, when Oblivion was released, PC was the superior version over the 360, all you needed was a 6800 Geforce.

Visually they are good but this gem and previous generations started with bluff. Killzone and motor storm CGI raised my expectation to sky. Then watch dogs and witcher 3 did the same. Thats on you then.

Not really, I mean the jump was there, but it took a long time to get there and the systems are supposedly on their way out already.. Just comparing the Xbox to the 360 jump which was 4 years versus the 10 year gap for these, it was a pretty tiny jump all things considered, makes me assume this next jump will be almost irrelevant in terms of visual impact.

I can't believe we have to ask us this question now.

God damn you, VR. Damn you.

But yeah, games like Battlefront and Uncharted 4 have me very satisfied with this gen. I hope next gen focuses on performance at least. But I won't hold my breath.

I certainly was. Uncharted 4 and 1886 were visual stunners that bode well for the long term evolution of graphics tech on the current hardware. We were also getting true HD ports/remasters unlike the limits on remasters last gen. Furthermore they were x86 based, which I think will make things easier for preservation in the long term, though that will obviously carry over onto the next consoles.

For the most part yes. I was honestly expecting a slightly larger leap in graphics but what we have right now is pretty good.

Overall yes, but I did think games would mostly be 1080p 60fps. Didn't get TOO many of those, unfortunately. Especially on XB1.

But, yeah, games like Uncharted 4 (best looking game overall I've ever seen personally), Infamous Second Son, Ryse, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone Shadow Fall, etc. all made me very happy with the jump in graphics we got.

I don't really treat Neo and Scorpio's arrival as the start of a new generation personally (I mean was the 32X the end of the 16-bit gen?) but yeah. The graphics we got were great. Ryse, Order, Uncharted 4 are all amazing looking games.

Hell, I personally would have been happy with "remaster" level graphics this gen. Last gen graphics at 1080/60 with AA.

I've yet to see a single game that has left me in awe at their visuals the same way Gears of War or Uncharted 2 did last gen. Infamous got the closest I suppose, but my mind was never really blown, it just looked very good.

Then again, I still need to play Uncharted 4.

Not really. They're nice, but even with the stuff like Uncharyed it just doesn't have the same oomph to me like previous gen jumps.

I was happy with the visual clarity and smooth framerates that came with most first party Wii U games so it goes without saying that the visuals and performance in games like doom and uncharted were also very much appreciated.

Games like those, as well as wonderful 101 and pikmin 3 made the upgrades worth it.

Kids these days complaining about 4-5 year generations...

Back in my day, Sega released a new console on average almost every second year:

1983: SG1000
1985: Mark III
1987: Master System (with built in FM and 3D)
1988: Mega Drive
1991: Mega CD
1994: 32X
1994: Saturn
1998: Dreamcast

I don't really treat Neo and Scorpio's arrival as the start of a new generation personally (I mean was the 32X the end of the 16-bit gen?)
.

For Sega it sure was. Splitting the userbase or making unsupported jumps is risky. Time will tell how the new systems manage this unusual transition.

Battlefront, Arkham Knight, Uncharted 4, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Forza, Driveclub, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Infamous: Second Son and a few that are escaping my mind at the moment were more than enough to leave me impressed.

People who pretend this generation has been a dissapointment from a technological standpoint and wasn't much of a visual leap from last generation are insane.

No, because I'm not happy with this generation's length. I can't be happy if I believe current hardware is being supplanted before it's peaked.

Uncharted 4 looks amazing (except for 1 chapter which looks a bit closer to PS3 levels) but I don't think it's PS4 at its absolute maximum potential. Aside from that that, I have an expectation that Naughty Dog games will look incredible regardless of the power of the platform.

And as PS4's flagship title, Uncharted 4 took a bit longer to come out than I'd have liked. This generation feels like it's only really just begin in the last 6-12 months or so.

Honestly if we get another Cerny spiel at E3 about how powerful and balanced and renaissance-like their new machine is, it'll just induce a massive eye roll from me. Fool me once.

Absolutely. Then again, I'm not a huge graphics or resolution worrier.

Games have looked great this gen, especially Uncharted 4 and Quantum Break as you mentioned. Plus, Forza Horizon 2 and inFAMOUS.

Very happy, yes. Lots of terrific looking games this generation, and very few (of those I played) with significant performance issues.

No, not too impressed. There have been some good-looking games, to be sure: Battlefront, The Division, The Witcher 3, Driveclub (despite the framerate), Arkham Knight, GTA V, FFXV. But there haven't been enough game really pushing beyond the limits set by the seventh generation of consoles. A lot of stuff that looks like uprezzed PS3 games (Black Ops III, MGSV) or that uses smoke and mirrors to hide the weaknesses of the console (Uncharted 4, Mario Kart 8, Halo 5). I was expecting all games to be about on-par with Star Citizen in this gen, but turns out that requires more power and more effort than we've been able to get so far. Hope to see more advancements as devs get newer tech.

Can you really call it a new generation coming? Do you call an iphone 6s a next generation compared to the 6? Not that it really matters but eh.

Visuals wise nothing really blew me away, but the specs of PS4 and Xbone are pretty bad. Plus I care more about gameplay. 60 fps > all. Lets hope they get that right with the new consoles.
