Western RPGs are casual as hell.

Anytime/Anywhere saves, auto saves... who's brilliant idea was it to implement such a casual fucking mechanic? I'm playing resonance of fate here and I'm on chapter 16. I just defeated 2 bosses and gained probably 16 levels per character and got a few good pieces for customization. Now I've stepped into an area with Hexes blocking my path. I can't flee from battle and I get killed after the first turn. The mixed damage of the tank and goliath's rockets either gauge break or just kill me completely. Now I'm stuck here with a bunch of gold to keep retrying once I die until I'm tapped out and have to reload my file. I'm just remembering games like mass effect where it auto-saves for you just in case you fuck up like I did, it's sad really. The general consensus is western rpgs are casual. I'm staying away from those casual games. They spoil me too much and cause me to fuck up in hardcore games that lack such stupid mechanics like anywhere/anytime saves or auto-saves. As I'm forced to turn this game off I no longer feel like playing it anymore. I lost too much progress to even give a shit about the game.

The anywhere saves kind of ruined Fallout 3 for me.

I would enter an area, kill a bad guy, then save, and the entire thing got very tedious.

I'm more of a JRPG fan than a WRPG fan, but I think that's a pretty odd reason to attack an entire genre.

Anyway, I'm playing Last Remnant right now and it allows you to save anywhere.

In before a massive storm and bitter verbal culture war.

It really does depend on the game.

Though I do agree with the limitations of auto-save. I often hear game journalists and game reviewers take the presence of save spots as "poor game design" and "archaic game design" and detract score points in reviews.

As if save points have no purpose whatsoever other than to be "lazy" or fall into traditional design.

That isn't the case. If you had auto-save in Final Fantasy VI, you would easily have to start the game all over from the beginning because it would be easy for the game to save itself into an unwinnable state. There's a reason save points exist and that you can't save anywhere. It's because many legitimate games should have some points of no return where you cannot win no matter how talented you are.

There's a strategy in knowing when to run away and come back with more potions and when not to. And being an RPG, you shouldn't have to start the game over from the very beginning just because you didn't properly prepare for a dungeon.

Congratulations, OP. You managed to get my lazy ass out of bed just to read this thread and my, was it worth it.

My review score for this thread: 9 weeds out of 10

I dont care for saving anywhere but one thing that Final Fantasy 13 got right for me was letting you continue after a game over right before a boss if you died so you wouldn't have to reload hours of progress.

It's true - western rpg's are dedicated to making neckbeards feel like they're worth something. Sex or loot leveraged as endpoint quest rewards. The facilitation of these goals as the main point of playing; the shortest path to that line of dialogue suggesting love is encouraged. Baby games.

Meanwhile in a jrpg I'm lucky if they give me a broken sword to start things off.

I'll keep my save anywhere/anytime features thank you.
While I think wRPGs are just fine and can be challenging.

And while this feature, which is basically endless save states, has its place, despite the fact many gamers hate save states and look down upon gamers who use save states.

It's a just fine feature. But it shouldn't exist in all games. Having save states in all games anywhere at any time, limits game development potential.

There should be a point of no return or an unwinnable state. And you shouldn't have to risk saving yourself into an unwinnable state so that you must start the game over from the beginning. There is gameplay challenge in being able to accomplish something right then and right there. And there is also gameplay in strategy. I don't think that all games should be possible to win if you're talented enough, no matter what mess you've gotten yourself into.

It's not casual. It's a staple of PC gaming for years and years. Why would you want no save anywhere when there are no checkpoints or save points?

I'm currently playing SMT1 and it's really hard and vague. So assuming all JRPGs are this game, and all WRPGs are Mass Effect...

As someone who loathes most WRPGs...what are you talking about? Autosave/AnySave is an awesome feature that promotes playability.

I didn't feel like being mean to someone who's complaining about easy wrpgs and listing modern examples. It sort of makes fun of itself.

Derrick, two things, it still makes me laugh for some reason that you liked Persona 4 of all games, and 2, I really cant not read any of your posts in Jensen's voice now damn it!

So what if, in Chrono Trigger, you save right before fighting Lavos, where you're no longer able to go back, where you are far too underleveled to be able to defeat Lavos. And this save is saved onto all three save slots.

You have to erase all of your saves and start the game over from the beginning.

Which is why they don't allow you to save in a place like that.

Play games back when the distinction was Console RPG and Computer RPG. None had reached the levels of Wizardry 8 imo.

I honestly think OP is referring to modern WRPGs... since WRPG sorta became a term when CRPG vs ComRPG vanished.

They're also probably truer to the 'role playing' part of a role playing game. Just saying.

That depends on your perception of a "Role". WRPG's allow you to define your role assuming you will play to the rules of your own creation. JRPG's puts you in the role of a defined character. You have freedom as far as tactics and sometimes style but decision making on large issues are normally fixed.
