Lol, there is so little cat left in some cases :P

The swimming cat is adorable.

My ex had norwegian forest cat and he enjoyed (well, he still) water like crazy. But he shrink in size for 80% during his swimming adventures :D

There are some cat breeds that enjoy water.

Just get one of those.

This is true, but there are other factors at play.

Cats aversion to water comes from the fact that they were desert animals and getting wet at certain times ruins their ability to regulate their body temperature. A cat that got wet when it was cool out or just before dark would likely freeze to death. So if you absolutely must bathe a cat (which is not needed regularly at all, basically the only time they need a bath is if they get sprayed by a skunk or something), you should make sure the room and the water are both warm so the cat remains comfortable. You dump a cat into a lukewarm tub in a 68 degree air conditioned room, it is going to view that as a threat to it's life and go straight to fight or flight. They don't understand towels or blow dryers, they just instinctively know that wet + cold = death, and all the 'bad kitty' this and that is not going to accomplish anything when they are in that state. Then once a cat has one traumatic experience where he thinks you are trying to kill him in the bathtub, he is never going to want any part of it again.

Noisy faucets and such can also freak a cat out, so it's best to prefill the tub and/or use a pitcher instead of the faucet.

Put a space heater in the bathroom and crank it up to 90+, fill the tub with very warm(but not painfully hot) water, and introduce the cat slowly, and you won't get the same reaction, even among breeds that are not traditionally fond of water (because really with the exception of the newer hybrid exotic breeds, cat genetics hasn't changed enough to lock such varied instinctive behaviors into place).

My kitten survived a 50 minute spin in the washer (while it was full of water).
She was sleeping in there and my mum filled it up and closed the door without realising - wasn't until the last minutes of the wash I could hear her cries from inside there.
Vet said they've never known a cat to survive a wash :o

oh god water

I think they often instinctually think they're drowning, I remember reading that somewhere I think. You can at least tell from their level of aversion that it's not just some small annoyance to them and they're actually fairly afraid or distressed.

People make too big of a deal out of giving a cat a bath. If you have a kitten and get them used to it at a young age, and do it every now and then, they get used to it quickly. Few of them end up loving it, but most end up tolerating it.

Here is our Siberian, Clancy...

(the next time we give him a bath I'll try to take a picture of him with a dry head and totally soaked body)

I think most people only have a problem with it when it's done for amusement.

Those cats are beautiful. I'd get one, but it seems like they require too much work. Too much brushing :P

Help

police

murder

lol olol

itll get the fuck over it

oh god water

won't be so damn funny when that baby ends up all scratched up. it's just dumb to do something like that.

Geez I'd be so fucking pissed but cats don't understand negative reinforcement from what I gather so I don't think I'd be able to handle this. How the hell do you tell the cat to calm the fuck down. Fucking vicious but cute at the same time. Dumb cats.

dogs don't fare much better.

On top of breed differences. Mankind itself is to blame for a lot of Cats aversion to water. Since domestication unlike dogs cats have been a kept in doors primarily species. Even those that are allowed outside are generally immediately brought in at the potential of rain.

That makes water a foreign and potentially unsettling experience.

Eh? Outside of the US, most people let their cats come and go as they please.

NO they are not. They're fucking terrifying. My first job was at a pet grooming place attached to a veterinary hospital. Most of the cats had to be drugged just to bath them safely(usually before a surgery). They would put a breathing tube in that I had to hold up while I bathed them. So basically, I was holding up a breathing tube while showering a semi aware cat with my other hand... While it slowly woke up soaked and pissed off. The noises that a wet cat that is unable to move is fucking terrifying and the fact that you like this is terrifying.
