Wha? Buffy premiered 15 years ago??

Certain episodes of Buffy hold up WAY better than others now.

There's a massive disparity; some are downright humorous, specifically when they hinge on complex practical or CG effects...

(sure it looks like a Power Rangers villain in a still shot, but in motion.... it looks exactly like a Power Rangers villain)

...but the ones with solid concepts that don't require substantial visual effects, like The Wish, hold up masterfully.

Angel is fantastic. Personally I like Buffy better, but there are plenty of people who feel otherwise.

The first season of Angel is kind of a train wreck though.. Worse than the first season of Buffy in some ways (not as much fun), and it's full-length, so you have to trudge through quite a few episodes. I wouldn't suggest skipping it because I think it is important to set the show up properly, but don't get discouraged if you aren't immediately sucked in. The second season immediately delivers and it mostly stays solid from there on.

No problem there, if you judged Buffy just on the first season it would be pretty bad, so I'd definitely assume the same with Angel.

Season 4 of Angel is an even bigger train wreck than Season 6 of Buffy, but at least it the ending is worth it... in some respects.

I never hated Angel season 4 or season 6 of Buffy as much as some people. In fact, I downright enjoyed season 6 of Buffy the first time through but I like it much less with each successive viewing. Angel season 4 definitely has some big problems though.. no doubt about that, and I think I was insulated from some of the worst issues because I watched it for the first time on DVD in a rapid-fire marathon format over about a week's time. Issues that bother you when you have to wait each week for a new episode are cushioned a little bit when you digest things more quickly.

The only Buffy season that really bothers me is season 4.. that season just felt all wrong.

This episode debuted Ms. Calender, and that's what's most important. :)

Agreed. I also like s6 better than most but absolutely loathe s4.

s6 was tightly written and although people may not like what happened, s6 accomplished what it set out to do. Drag everyone down as much as possible and explore the darker aspects of humanity and how sometimes, we're our own worst enemies. Multiple episodes that season hit that message home, and I really appreciate Grave (the finale) for a number of reasons. Plus Dark Willow was an awesome villain.

s4... I just can't even get started on how bad it is. Even Buffy's hair is all wrong most of the time. When you don't get the little things right, there's little that can be said of the big things. Hush and Restless are brilliant, diamonds in the rough it could be said. The rest? Bad bad bad. Riley is the worst love interest ever in fiction and the villain was completely laughable, and not in a good way. Bad.

Absolutely.. In fact the only thing I really liked about season 4 (other than a few eps) was the matrixesque moment at the end.

It's too bad Robia LaMorte turned into a bit of a religious fanatic.
Bringing her back as The First was an awful decision wasted on redeeming an awful character (ANGEL)

He's a murderer but he doesn't want to!

This extends into Season 8 and 9

By the way, massive spoilers about Season 9

I don't know what to feel about it, other than it pushes boundaries?

Buffy gets pregnant, but due to all the pressures of her life (amongst not knowing who the father is), decides to have an abortion

Season 9's started already?

Absolutely.. In fact the only thing I really liked about season 4 (other than a few eps) was the matrixesque moment at the end.

I hated that too. :P I thought it was wayyy too cheesy how Buffy basically became Captain Planet in order to beat up this robot that didn't even really have any powers.

Very close tie with Edward Cullen yes. Only reason Riley wins as worst love interest ever is because Edward's co-star is just as terrible a character as him, while Buffy is one of the best characters written.

Season 6 was great in a few aspects, but I think it went off the rails a bit in the middle with the 'Real Life Is a Villain!' theme it was going for. Once More With Feeling is a masterpiece, but stuff like Life Cereal is only good because the Troika is hilarious. It redeems itself from Seeing Red onwards, but there is some really terrible stuff in there like Double Meat Palace.

Agreed though, Season 4 is very close to it in terms of badness, but it still had the early charm that made Buffy's 1-3 so deliciously interesting to watch. Season 5-7 is just dark and moody comparatively.

Season 5 is amazing. One of my favorite moments of any show is when Buffy give her infamous power speech to the council. I cat find the damn speech on youtube.

I felt really old when watching the last epsiodes of smallville. I watched that horrible show for a decade . 1/3rd of my life !

s5 is my favorite season. I don't think it was the tightest written season (I think it's a tie between s2 and s6), but it comes really close, and has the best finale, one of the best villains, and the best chemistry between all the characters. For me, it was the pinnacle of the series.

hasn't aged a bit...
toofab_buffy_vampire_slayer_then_now_0009_Layer_24_gallery_main.jpg
Which is impressive given he was already in his late 30's on the show. He'll be 50 in a few months 0_0

Not that Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) looked old ... actually I'd argue he looks good for his age and did on Buffy as well ... but it's fucked up to think Spike was only 8 years younger

The Body.... 'nuff said

Oh! I wanna talk about that!

That episode is widely considered to be completely totally amazing, but all I saw was missed potential.
Having a monster at the end
completely ruined the episode for me and it would have been much better if they hadn't felt the need to do it and it would have just been about everyone being sad.

The next (?) episode after that where they make it pretty clear that Dawn's resurrection spell is gonna go bad and we'll get
zombie-Joyce
but then cut that off literally at the last second was way better.

Even before the episode. The build up to it happening it just suddenly came out of nowhere and the episode prior to it just was in shock of it all

SMG killed it in that arc
her delivery of "mommy" at the end of the second when zombie joyce is at the door was heartbreaking

Funny story I remember hearing. When James Marsters first started, he was hitting on SMG hardcore. She was able to put him down gently by saying "I can't date you cause your character will die soon and then we can't continue the relationship".

7 years later...

More like four (s2 to s6 wham bam scene.)

I have no clue how girls were so crazy over Spike. Angel I can obviously see, but Spike ALWAYS looked old to me. And yeah, I guess he hasn't aged that much, mainly because he was already old.

Yeah, I rewatched this whole series last year and it became really obvious that it was old when every time someone would say "We've got to warn Buffy!" I'd think "Bitch seriously needs to get a cell phone."

Most of the cast looks the same. Make a movie already.

There's no excuse for one not having been made all this time.

(Yeah, I know there was one in 1992. If you're thinking about pointing that out, you're not funny)

Nah, just make an Angel S6 with Willow and Faith in it. And Gunn dead.

Doesn't feel like 15 years. I remember when I watched the first episode really well.

Still one of my favourite shows. It's aged pretty well. I don't think there was a bad season.

Lol, how do you write off a show because it "doesn't compare to the great dramas of TODAY!"? It's called context, and considering all that the show achieved throughout its run, it remains majorly important and influential. Not to mention, the series' best outings (Hush, The Body, OMWF) are easily some of the finest television ever produced and go head to head with the "untouchable god tier shows of today."

On a personal level, it'll always remain a favourite simply due to the almost effortless combination of genres and the humour which tied it all together.

Some of the best TV ever right there. I know that by and large the show was inconsistent, but when it hit all the notes it was incredible. Didn't Hush win some Emmys?

Hah! I just finished up Angel this week after watching it concurrently with Buffy once it started via Amazon Prime (Angel ran a year longer.)

There are several episodes where this type of thing occurs, but I clearly remember one episode in Season 1 or 2 of Buffy where the whole plot revolves around a couple of the main characters not being able to get in contact with each other. Something that wouldn't happen nowadays at all due to cell phones.

You never watched a horror movie have you?

Cell phones always run out of battery when they're really needed. Or get no reception.

And Drusilla actually looks better now?

Thought she looked pretty hot back then. But I always had a thing for girls with overbite.

That was a super important time period for where we are now with television. Buffy's part of that legacy.

And everyone in that cast is doing well for themselves, except maybe Nicholas Brandon.

I just felt like this needed to be restated. Joss Whedon helped pave the way for the great shows we have on TV today.

I've often wondered who the most successful alum from Buffy is. Probably Hannigan or maybe Seth Green. Boreanaz has done well for himself too. Fillion too if you can count his small role as the preacher.

PS....Bring Firefly back plz...k thx

I fear a Buffy/Angel movie would fall into the same trap as the X-Files movies and just turn out to be really long episodes.

Reboot!

Be careful what you wish for. There was some talk a while ago of a Buffy reboot without Joss Whedon's involvement.

Oh I know.

*shudder*

Those two wastes of human beings technically own the movie and could do a reboot if they wished... luckily I feel most everyone involved in the potential funding realized what a terrible idea it was.

Any future Reboot (There will be one) needs to be handled with care.

Eh I wouldn't want a movie. At this point it would just be forced and awkward. What they should really do is get some AAA animation house to animate s8/9 and After the Fall.
