I love this thread and I hate this thread.

This thread has done a disservice of not mentioning MCII by Mikal Cronin. Great rock album, probably my favorite of the year thus far. I also recommend his debut album, but you said music from this year.

Change

Shout it Out

You might enjoy Dark of the Daylight by Crash Kings. It's a bit out there and a lot different from their original debut, but I like some tracks from it all the same.

Hot Fire

Hesitate

Finally, I don't know what you man by simple punk(pop punk? =P), but if you're a fan of any punk at all, you gotta check out True North by Bad Religion. They're old yeah, but this is the best album they've put out since Stranger Than Fiction IMO, great stuff.

My Head is Full of Ghosts

Robin Hood in Reverse

Alright, time to amuse myself by giving some more obscure electronica-focused recommendations!

Nocow - Solus (really unique IDM music, quite hard for Nocow)
Sweet Valley - SV (trap/bass/electronic music from the indie artist Wavves, free too!)
Kelela - Cut 4 Me (good r'n'b with amazing production by established bass producers)
Iamnobodi - Elevated (instrumental hip-hop from the Soulection crew, very chill music, similar style to the Evil Needle album)
Snow Ghosts - A Small Murmuration (folk rock mixed with electronic beats, good shit)
Femme En Fourrure - 36-26-36 (great mix of various electronica genres)
Liar - Spirewards (same thing here, great mix of all kinds of electronica)
Markus Suckut - DNA (pure techno, Ostgut Ton-style, quite dark!)
Drumcell - Sleep Complex (another pure techno album from the US, great stuff if you're into dark-ish, droning techno)

Check out Revise Your Maps, by Perhapst.

It's an alt country/indie folk project almost completely performed by John Moen. It's a great album created by a ridiculously talented musician, and I'd totally encourage you to check it out. It's on iTunes.

Really surprised no one mentioned this album. I think it's the best one I've heard all year.
Not since Ween have I found a band that seems so good at being ambitious. It's a two piece band that covers genres from rap to indie pop to electronica and just about everything's real fun and upbeat.

It's just a fun as hell album. These guys are gonna be huge.

Young Knives 'Sick Octave' in the mail, woohoo! Backed the KS campaign. Oh Happiness EP was darn good. Now let's see if this bad boy measures up to the rest of my faves this year.

In case you haven't heard of them because you're not a Brit, they are an indie rock outfit that went from "She's Attracted To" (one of the best music videos ever) to now sounding more electronic like this:

Reproduction

Maureen

Haken - The Mountain
Ayreon - The Theory of Everything
The Flower Kings - Desolation Rose
The Winery Dogs
Big Big Train - English Electric Full Power
Dream Theater - Dream Theater
Riverside - Shrine Of New Generation Slaves
Spockbeard - Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep
Daft Punk - RAM

From the top of my head.

I forgot this came out. I need to go back and relisten since I seem to recall liking it more than his last album.

OP, the new Kings of Leon came out this year and blows their last couple albums out of the water.

Really? I thought Ghost Town was one of his most solid albums. As much as I like it, L'ami du Peuple had a few questionable choices (the synths on Burial mainly).

who is doing the album voting thread?

I kinda wanna do a songs thread

I would, but there's just no way I can tally everything. I did the atease poll by hand one year and it was far too massive of an undertaking, and I'm assuming it will be even bigger on GAF.

There should definitely be a songs thread too. I don't think GAF would like atease's system of only getting to choose 3 songs though, nor would they like only being able to choose singles. :P

Cloudkicker - Subsume (Post-metal/Progressive Metal)
Jesu - Everyday I Get Closer to the Light from Which I Came (Post-metal/shoegaze)
Touché Amoré - Is Survived By... (Hardcore Punk/Post-Hardcore)
Lost in Kiev/Zero Absolu - Lost in Kiev/Zero Absolu Split (Post-Metal/Post-Rock)
Tesseract - Altered State (Progressive Metal)
Sithu Aye - 26 (Progressive Metal/Jazz Fusion)
Plini - Sweet Nothings (Progressive Metal/Jazz Fusion)
Plini - Other Things (Progressive Metal/Jazz Fusion)
No Tide - Meridian (Pop punk/Hardcore Punk)
Lighthouses - Black Letter Day (Hardcore Punk/Post-rock/Post-hardcore)
Kekal - Autonomy (Avant-garde Metal)
Hollow Tongue - Godsnakes (Sludge Metal/Hardcore Punk)
Distances - Ages (Post-metal/Sludge Metal)
City in the Sea - Below the Noise (Progressive Metalcore)
August Burns Red - Rescue & Restore (Technical Metalcore)

This is the best album of 2013 thus far...

Promises by The Boxer Rebellion.

If you like bands like Muse, Doves, The Cooper Temple Clause and Radiohead, then you should definitely give these guys a listen. They're friendly with The Joy Formidable too, who you've mentioned you like (excellent band!).

Select tracks...

Diamonds

Fragile

This is my pick as well. Their whole catalog is great.

I think 3 songs is the only way to do it tbh. Lots of people would participate, and tallying anymore than that would be a nightmare. I was thinking people could split up some of the tallying because it might be outrageous, especially for the albums thread.
