What are recent good Metroidvanias?

Env Station Alpha is definitely very Metroidy but I wish they didn't adhere so strictly to that super low resolution. Just feels tedious to have two zoom levels for the map when your screen could easily show the whole map at zoomed in detail...

Castle in the Darkness is one of the few mentioned here that I enjoyed but I enjoy it when the 'metroidvanias' are as close to castlevania mechanics as possible with a combat/boss focus.

Yeah, I think I'm the opposite on that.

How is the XBONE controller's d-pad compared to the awful 360 d-pad? I never finished playing Ori on my PC because of that.

Use the thumbstick. The dpad is not the way to play Ori, lol. You can't aim your bash nearly as precisely. This is coming from someone who did a 100% completion speedrun on One Life mode in 2.5 hours.

OP: Nothing else in this thread compares to Ori, just sayin.

This thread made me realize I need to catch up on my Indietroidvanias. Shovel Knight and Axiom Verge were kinda disappointing to me, but I haven't played Guacamelee, Ori, or Shadow Complex. All three of those games were offputting to me for various reasons, but they seem to be fairly praised in general, so I want to give them a shot in the near future. I still need to finish Salt and Sanctuary too. I got about halfway through and I've been debating whether or not to just start it over or not.

There are a couple of timed escape style sequences that are difficult, but otherwise the game should be manageable for most players, especially with the adjustable difficulty option.
The escape sequences (in Ori And The Blind Forest) took some tries at first. But they're absolutely beatable. I'm not a fan of any escape bids (not in Rayman, not in Halo, not in Ori), but outside of that the game is amazing and enjoyable. I rebought and replayed Ori with the Definitive Edition and the escape sequences are easier than with the original version and to my surprise fit the game quite well.

OP, I think you should jump in the Ori train...

I didn't care for Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, Xeodrifter, Shantae, Strider, or Ori and the Blind Forest

but

Environmental Station Alpha and Toki Tori 2 were great

and both Salt and Sanctuary and Momodora IV are off to a good start for me in terms of gameplay at least
