What are scientific myths that the average internet user still believe?

My mum has lots.

It's too cold to snow.
Humans evolved from Apes.
Bad things happen in groups of 3.

Er, humans did evolve from apes. At a minimum because we still are apes, but also because the common ancestor hominids and chimpanzees shared was an ape too.

There's also one that says "humans don't descend from monkeys" - presumably because hominids evolved from other great apes. But that misses the fact that Great Apes and Old World Monkeys share a common ancestor more recently than either Old World Monkeys or Great Apes do with New World Monkeys. Since that common ancestor would be considered a "monkey" humans descend from monkeys as well.

But it's all a bit silly because the words "monkey" and "ape" don't have much scientific meaning.

iirc a lot of people think evolution works in the Lamarck fashion.

Actually, because of epigenetics there might be some validity to Lamarckism. Not in the way he hypothesized it though.

I'm generally suprised at the large amount of people who still deny climate change, etc.

"Why's it still snowing so bad tho"
"BS the ice caps are getting bigger"

Maybe not hard science scientific, but the adage that "Latin is a dead language" is totally false. Italian and the other Romance languages are Latin just its modern dialectical iterations. Classical Latin might be "dead", but since it was only ever a literary and legal language it was never really alive to begin with.

The thing is, the plane's wheels are not how the plane generates thrust, it generates thrust by pushing against the air. Therefore the conveyor belt can't actually do anything but spin the wheels faster, while the body of the plane will be propelled forward by its engines regardless, and will take off.
It will technically slow down a little bit because the bearings aren't perfect, but yeah it's a negligible effect. It's hard for people because even when it's flying the way a plane operates can be hard to get your head around.

My sister legitimately is allergic to gluten and it is not celiac disease. If she even touches it causes her to have a rash and internally causes her to swell. We thought it was nonsense for awhile but she was tested several times and thats what it turned out being food with the exact same ingredients minus gluten she could eat all she wanted gluten foods maybe 1 bite or 2 before she became instantly full. She eventually wound up in the hospital because of this is the only reason I know having an allergic reaction to it is possible. Although the doctors do not refer to it as celiac disease.
My sister is allergic to wheat. The misinformation about gluten is stupid but it's a boon to people that actually need to avoid it.

Eggs are bad for you because cholesterol

Everything someone who considers themselves a "grammar nazi" says about language. It's ignorance of how language and linguistics works on the level of "why are there still monkeys".

Seamus' theme includes a line about limes.

Wolf packs and the 'Alpha Male'

Despite a lot of media depictions of the Alpha Male in a wolf pack being the biggest and toughest male of the group becoming the leader through strength and respect, in fact wolf packs are almost exclusively families. The 'Alpha' is actually just the father of the family. It is very rare for there to be any other male wolves in the pack that are not his children. So there is no position to fight over. When the sons grow up, they leave to find their own mates and found their own packs.

The reason I brought this up was because for the longest time, I believe aspartame caused serious physical and mental problems which caused me to shy away from diet drinks all together. Thanks to the "Aspartame Free Diet Pepsi available Nationwide starting today" thread, I'm now enlightened.

you should probably just stay away from sugary drinks altogether.

-a LOT of the stuff Alton Brown talks about in his shows, even when he's trying to 'bust myths'. (he mostly just goes along with old rules of thumb and *regurgitating* "science" he's been told rather than actually looking at things scientifically, or you know, testing anything.)

-the direction water spins in the toilet depends on what side of the hemisphere you're on. (only dependent on the way the toilet works)

-a ton of the mythbusters stuff that they failed to actually test properly. (ie: when they had them go through the target shooting course twice. you're obviously going to be better prepared and focused your second time in, regardless of what you do to try and increase performance.)

Curious, how did your brain reason that the government and all these thousands of companies were aware of the physical and mental problems it caused, yet they were still a-ok to use it?

I used to work at a Pharmacy and I believe I heard that from my boss who just became a Pharmacist so it just kind of stuck, I didn't really argue that Aspartame caused these issues, just that it was said to me once and it just sort of stuck. It wasn't a far stretch if you ask me when they allow cigarettes to be sold.

Last I read, wolves are actually more egalitarian. Dogs have rigid social hierarchies because we've bread that behavior into them.

Also, there's not such thing as "alpha", "beta" etc in humans. People conflate it with type-A and type-B personalities which was basically a pseudoscientific way of predicting heart disease based on stress levels.

Yeah, the oxford comma debate is silly. Also, there straight up is no anti dangling participle rule in English.

Fans cool a room. My fiancees mom leaves the fans on all over the house when she isn't home so the house will stay cool. No matter how many times I've told her its just blowing air around and wasting money she still does it.

Lots of gray. It's fun to track the evolution of opinions over the two threads, too. I've always found the puzzle interesting!

I've been tracking one....

But seriously please don't hate me outside of the context of THAT thread - you're one of my favorite posters outside of your regional delusion.

Actually there is some evidence for being cold and wet increasing your chances of getting a cold significantly. They aren't quite sure why - either a direct weakening of the immune system, viruses surviving longer, or your entry points being more exposed.

[Citation needed]

Even if true, it's not what causes the disease. You have to be exposed to the virus to catch a cold, which is very unlikely while standing in the rain.

That petrochemical/energy companies don't invest in R&D for alternative energy, when most of the biggest R&D endeavors in alternative technology actually come from the scientists at these companies.

Opinion on this seems to be changing a bit, at least regarding some herbivores. Most archaeologist seem to agree though that the majority of carnivorous dinosaurs had feathers, though.
This isn't a changing opinion--no paleontologist (not archaeologist, paleontologist, they're quite different) ever seriously considered most herbivorous dinosaurs to be feathered. The idea that "all dinosaurs had feathers" doesn't really exist in paleontological circles and seems to stem from laypeople misinterpretations.

Haha, no worries. If I hated every poster I've disagreed with at one point or another I don't know who would be left!

Oh and another myth that I just remembered: sugar makes kids hyperactive.

TV does though. Especially the sudden removal of it.

This is a solid one. You guys would be amazed if you looked into where some green energy companies came from.

Whoops, my mistake. I typed that in a rush and archeologist was the first thing that came to mind. I'm ashamed, considering I wanted to be a paleontologist as a kid.

Oh, I got another one. Fish oil tablets have several benefits, despite the fact that the most quoted referenced research article on the subject had shaky foundations and that most new research tends to find little correlation between taking the tablets and improvements in health.

I'd imagine a lot of people still believe gluten is bad. I was unfortunate enough to turn the TV on briefly during breakfast this morning to catch some morning show where this vegan chef was babbling about his new book, and of course mid-bite goes off on this little mini anti-gluten rant about how 95% of that shit was designed in a lab and you shouldn't eat it. And of course, the hosts both helped him rub that one off.

I know my relatives are still caught up in that shit too.

Sshhhh, don't tell them. It's good for the few of us with celiac disease that non-celiacs think that gluten is bad for them.

Moving away from the OP title and more onto things that people don't get that they should get...

is the issue of numbers.

The way we write numbers is on a log scale.

10 is 11111111111 added together.

100 is 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111 11111111111

By the time you've added a few more zeroes onto the end, the number is nearly incomprehensible to human beings - including ones like million and billion that we throw around on a regular basis.

When you're talking about distances as in the case of planetary distances... yeah, those numbers don't really mean much to us other than - big number, or bigger number.

Humans only use X% of their brain. It strikes me silly that people actually believe such a large, active, all-important organ is hardly used.

Where was this info when I was forced to take these pills as a kid?

does right wing science denialism count as myths? they certainly have to lie a lot to support their ridiculous claims.

the anti-GMO crowd are dangerous.

gluten free people are just hilarious. way to be trendy while eating worse food, asshole.

a side note, I've lost a dramatic amount of weight in the last 9 months and most people ask if I cut out all carbs. which I didn't. I eat a healthy amount of complex carbs. the majority of people do not know what a healthy diet is and bullshit like Atkins and paleo just contribute to the ignorance.

A huge part of the Anti-GMO and "gluten is evil" craze can be attributed to the left, actually. The far left is as insane and ignorant as the far right.

The gluten/"organic" thing in particular is such a hipster thing that I wonder why people think it stems from right wingers.

That GMOs are completely harmless and the countries who banned foods with them are totally dumb. Also, the studies in favor of GMOs are not at all funded by the GMO manufacturers.
