What are some essential Wii games that don't require motion controls?

I picked up a Wii U a few weeks ago specifically for gaming with my girlfriend, and we're having a blast playing through SM3D World together, and I plan on grabbing Mario Kart 8 this weekend for the same reason.

I have also been playing through ZombiU, which has gone down to insanely cheap prices, and loving the absolute shit out of it. I'm actually going to finish it after I type up this post. It got me thinking, though, of all the games I must have missed out on during the Wii era, having ever owned one, but owning a PS3, 360, and PC. I played all the big multiplats and Sony/MS exclusives, but not very much in the Wii department. Now that I have a system that can play Wii games, I'd love to catch up on some of those. The drawback, however, is that I don't have any wii motes or nunchucks, and I don't intend on getting any (which means no Skyward Sword or Metroid Prime 3, sadly).

With that in mind, what are some of the best Wii games I need to check out that I can play with my Wii U Pro controller. Some names I recall being interested in: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Zack and Wiki, and Little King's Story.

Oh, and I never got to play the Resident Evil REmake. How was the Wii version? I might just grab that, too.

Unfortunately you can't play Wii games with the Wii U Pro Controller. You could maybe find a classic controllers to connect to a Wii Remote but those have strangely shot up in price.

You can't play Wii games with the Wii U Pro Controller sadly. When you turn your Wii U into Wii Mode, it is essentially turning into a Wii and can't recognize any Wii U controllers.

Can't use Wii U Pro controller in Wii mode. Sorry bud

But to answer the question, Rhythm Heaven and Punch-Out. Both in top 10 games on the system, Punch-Out in particular in my top 10 games of last gen

Well, without a Wiimote and Classic controller pro, you won't be playing any Wii games motion free. WiiU Pro Controller is not compatible with the Wii. Also, whoever was telling you Zack and Wiki could be played without motion controls . . . yeah no. Frankly, I would just invest in a Wiimote and nunchuk, it won't cost you much money these days.

You're pretty much going to need to buy a:

Wii MotionPlus and Nunchuk, which you should anyways for Pikmin 3. I'd also recommend the Pro Controller if only for Xenoblade.

Get Xenoblade, the Mario Galaxy games, and Rhythm Heaven at least.

Zack and Wiki absolutely requires the Wii Remote, so no gamepad use there, but you're seriously limiting yourself if you'll only use the Pro Controller.

Mario Galaxy Series (A MUST - very little motion control required)
Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy
A Boy and His Blob
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Boom Blox (Insane multiplayer fun)

I know it's not what you asked, but a wiimote will be extremely cheap if you go to a pawn shop or something. Probably worth it considering all the games it'll unlock.

Seriously - stretch to buying a nunchuck if you can - you can then enjoy the awesome mario galaxy games. Otherwise the Kirby games are good and have co-op. Also rayman.

Yeah you need at least one wiimote to hook up a pro controller to. Sorry OP.

That said, once you have one you can play Silent Hill: Shattered Memories as god intended it to be played. And that's just dandy.

Edit: Oops, don't forget the nunchuk for SH!

Nintendo should really patch in the option to use the Pro Controller (and gamepad) as a Wii Classic Pro controller.

I've been thinking about picking up some games but a Wii Mote + Nunchuck Costs around $90 here which is waaaaaay more than I am willing to pay for them

Because Nintendo stopped producing them now.

A patch wouldn't work, since you have to patch every single wii game in order for them to work with the Pro Controller and gamepad.

What the, I thought they would have given you more controller options now that they managed to get Wii games to stream to the gamepad.

you need a wii remote, dude

The Wii OS doesn't recognize the WiiU pad as an input device

All Wii controllers work via the wireless connection from the Wiimote. Classic controllers and fight sticks, even music game controllers. They all connect to the nunchuk port at the bottom of the Wiimote.

Changing where the video outputs to and changing where the inputs come from are two different problems.

Buy Wii Party U. You will get a cute party game and a Wiimote for free, or viceversa.
Get a used nunchuck and then play Pikmin 3 the way it was meant to be played. (And all the others Wii game of course)

I thought they were the same thing before I bought a WiiU. Why Nintendo chose to switch the name around instead of giving the Pro Controller an entirely new name I'll never understand.

Beside Controller pro not working for Wii games, I remember Z&W and LKS using motion control, no?

Many good suggestions here... BTW, many "pointing games" are great, such as Trauma Center and PES/WE Playmaker (a pity it's not a success).

Clearance sales of Wii games that come with a remote can be really great, too. Got a couple of wiimotes plus (with flingsmash) for ~5$ each.

The problem is that you quickly swim in wiimotes (I think I have 11 wiimotes now, 5 normal and 6 plus...)

IIRC Sin & Punishment 2 can be played with one of the game pads, although I'm not sure why you'd want to.

Also isn't the PAL version of Little King's Story 50Hz just like Madworld?

Okay so, say I have a friend that I can borrow wiimote/nunchuck and even possible a classic pro controller from.

Is it as simple as syncing it to the system as you would any proper controllers, or will I have to break out that motion bar thing that goes on top of the TV?

Pandora's Tower is amazing and, judging by this thread, quite overlooked; I'm guessing this has to do with the US version being released extremely late into the Wii's life (after the Wii U launch if I remember correctly). I hear that version is also a bit buggy, though I can't say for sure, since I live in Germany.

You should also give No More Heroes games a go (the first one is also on PS3 and can be played with a controller, which I would recommend over using the motion controls; the Wii version of NMH1 doesn't support the Classic Controller, AFAIK. NMH 2 does, though).

Other must haves (Galaxy, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Xenoblade, etc...) were already mentioned and are pretty obvious recommendations.

Apparently, it's a difficult issue, the way the games access the hardware doesn't use an abstraction layer that allow the games to recognize anything that wasn't available on Wii.

The U Pad doesn't use the same kind of connexion, so it can't fake a wiimote, unfortunately.

Wait what? I was going to get Little King's Story but if it's in 50Hz.

You can use the Gamepad as the motion bar, it has one built in.

What do you mean by "break out"?

It's as easy as syncing, yes, but you need a beacon. It's mostly two IR sources. The "sensor bar" is a solution (the Wii one works on Wii U) but you can also use the U pad (that comes with an integrated sensor bar, just put it under the TV, facing you). Or you can use any IR sources, even candles ^_^. There's also cheap sensors bars that can be bought for 5$ (but I'd be cautious with some second-party ones, even if it's just two IR leds)

Well, you'll need the sensor bar to actually use the pointer, which is required in some games. If you're only sticking to games that support the Classic Controller (which would be a shame), you won't need to use it. The Wii menu is normally controlled with the remote's pointer, but you can use the Classic Controller instead, for instance.

You'll need the sensor bar to navigate the Wii menu unless you have a classic controller plugged into the wiimote.

how to pair

To navigate the menus, you either need to hook up the sensor bar (so the wiimote pointer can see it) or plug in your classic controller (at which point you use the analog stick to steer the pointer around the screen).

OP where are you from? I think NA systems come with a sensor bar.
EDIT: It reads like it came with one. I would have that hooked up at all times, and it's not much of a visual distraction anyway.

Get a Wiimote and a Nunchuk and play Super Mario Galaxy ASAP, for christ's sake OP. Especially since you have to buy a new controller anyway.

No reason to avoid the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, OP. I'm assuming that you're interested in local co-op if you got a Wii U. If so, then the Wii Remote + Nunchuck is the best Player 2 control option for local co-op in most Wii U games. Then when your friends aren't there, use that same Wii Remote + Nunchuck combination to play Galaxy and Skyward Sword. I'd think of it as buying a second controller for your new system, rather than buying an old controller for an old system.

I thought they were the same thing before I bought a WiiU. Why Nintendo chose to switch the name around instead of giving the Pro Controller an entirely new name I'll never understand.

Yeah, Nintendo gonna Nintendo I guess. I always wondered if there would be a way to get the Pro controller to emulate a Wiimote with a classic controller plugged in. I imagine the controller would have to have it's on firmware though

Yeah Classic Controller's can navigate the Wii Menu without the sensor bar. The analog stick moves the cruiser.

Also a lot of Wii U games support the Classic Controller.

Off the top of my head:
Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
The Wonderful 101
Injustice: God's Among Us
Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper
Rayman Legends
Sonic All-star Racing Transformed
Call of Duty Black Ops 2
Call of Duty Ghosts
Tekken Tag Tournament 2

I have the two kinds of classic controllers and two Pro Controllers so I can play 4-player (sometimes 5 like in Wonderful 101 and Sonic Racing) in a bunch of games.

Rhythm Heaven. Every Wii owner should own this.

dat first post

Off the top of my head/bookshelf:

Any of the stellar retro compilations (King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Data East, Ultimate Shooting Collection, SNK Arcade Classics, Kirby's Dream Collection etc.)
A Boy and his Blob (don't remember playing with motion, just CC)
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom
Muramasa
Nights: Journey of Dreams (only remember using the CC)
Sonic Colors
Lost In Shadow
Fortune Street

Since you have to pick up a Wii controller

Zack and Wiki, Muramasa and No More Heroes should be on the list.

Even though they aren't "must haves" they showed that some 3rd parties actually cared about making a unique experience on the Wii.

You might want to rethink the "no motion controls" thing since you need a Wii remote anyway, but if you don't want any games that have any tilt, motion, or pointer controls at all it's gonna be kind of a short list. I'll give it a shot at a couple recommendations. You can play these with the classic controller.

Xenoblade Chronicles
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Goldeneye 007
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
A Boy and His Blob
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Sonic Colors

Keep in mind that any game involving shooting at dudes from a first or third person perspective will probably control better with a wiimote/nunchuk combo.

Also, there are a few more that are probably worth checking out, but these are the ones I've played and enjoyed.

IIRC Sin & Punishment 2 can be played with one of the game pads, although I'm not sure why you'd want to.

I tried it the past two days. While possible I wouldn't recommend it. S&P2 is heaven on the wiimote and nun chuck. And this is coming from someone who dislikes any type of motion control scheme.

Damn.
Guess I lucked out grabbing a remote + nunchuck when I did ($20 refurbished off Nintendo store)

I was going to say that the OP should just grab that but it looks like it's sold out + the price has gone up.

Shame.

No it can't

You can use the Gamepad as the motion bar, it has one built in.

IIRC I was able to force PAL60 on LKS using GeckoOS. It didn't work everytime though so I wouldn't recommend it

Xenoblade, The Last Story

You need a wiimote+nunchuck though.

Pandora's Tower as well. (essential might be debatable though as I never got too far into it so I might not be the person to ask.)

The Last Story and Xenoblade however are fantastic. (TLS was my absolute favorite but Xenoblade is right behind)
Ichange my favorite between the two every day, tomorrow Xenoblade will be the best haha :P
