What are some games that feature John Wick-esque "Gun Fu" combat?

One of very few times where I can probably recommend Enter the Matrix. That game had a few play styles, and the basic shooting one was by far the least broken.

Path of Neo was also a legit decent game.

Some Max Payne Matrix and Equilibirum mods have this.

10,000 Bullets has this. It's one of my favourite PS2 games.

Not to be confused with the cancelled 100 Bullets video game that also had this.

Europe and Japan only huh?

Added to import list.

I'm so hungry for a game that captures this. I think it needs to be a reaction-based Arkham style combat system that varies gunfire and physical strikes depending on range and the occasional grapple that you have to wrestle, stab, and shoot your way out of.

Honestly, I would love an actual well-funded game set in the Wick universe, but I'd prefer to play as an original assassin. The temptation would be to make it a prequel but I'd prefer John's history remain vague and mythic.

That'd never happen though. If they ever made a John Wick game of course it'd have to be titled "John Wick" and of course it'd have to star him.

Will never understand the hate about Max Payne 3. Out of all the opinions heard and said about video games on the internet, Max Payne 3 regarded as anything but the greatest third person shooter of all time is head and shoulders the most baffling to me. Best in the series. Best in the genre. Best in everything. RIP Rockstar Vancouver. Wish more people understood your masterpiece.

Excuse me I have to be somewhere now....:(

Another to add max Payne 3 to the list . It's really the only modern (well last gen ) bullet shooter that gives you same gunfu gameplay of John wick. Headshots are brutal , rely on painkillers to survive , amazing physics engine for your body movement and the kills.

I would love a modern hd remake minus the long load times . Make it happen rockstar .

This is the only example of stuff you could actually see in a John Wick film. Can you play the whole game like that? Would be amazing

Definitely not the whole game, buy if you're skilled enough you can pull of many situations like that, but at it's core, it's a stealth game where you can be extremely aggresive if you want.

A lot of games with shooting can be played this way if you're good enough. As far as a game that does a good job of making you feel like an unstoppable badass when you're doing well, the last one that did that for me was the newest Doom on Ultra Violence.

F.E.A.R. is also pretty good at it if you don't rely on bullet time.

Word. Max Payne 3 is one of the best games ever.

Best. Mod. Ever.

Remedy should've hired Kenneth Yeung.

I used to make my own Max Payne maps in MaxED (really fun map editor to use, the original tutorials still exist online) and release them on the Max Payne forums that were hosted by 3DRealms. Kenneth Yeung was a very active member there and would constantly post updates to his Kung Fu mod. Remedy employees did acknowledge his work on those forums and they were fans of his mod. It makes me wonder what ever happened to that guy.

Yeah, I think there was a poster referencing him in MP2.

I don't think a proper John Wick game could be a third person shooter.

John Wick doesn't aim. His reflexes and muscle memory are so superior, that lining up his aim and acquiring targets is not something he needs to think about and thus something the player should have to think about. Crowd control is the challenge John Wick faces so it should be the challenge the player faces. Reacting to the existence of an enemy threat is what you should have to worry about, not lining up a shot. If John sees them, they're shot. (Unless they're another assassin.)

I say again, it would have to play like an evolution of the Arkham combat. I just don't think there is a game like that yet.

Didn't the Dead to Rights games have close quarter hand-to-hand and gun mixed executions?

Only played the first one, but I'd imagine the others are similar.

There were actually quite a few references to members of the Max Payne forums hidden in Max Payne 2. They also thanked a lot of forum members in the game credits. They were really cool with their fanbase back then.

But Max Payne 1 with the Kung Fu mod was like proto John Wick... even though it was actually still inspired by the Matrix and John Wu movies. It was just adding the missing kung fu element.

I mean, SUPERHOT is literally John Wick simulator.

Figuratively.

Yup. SUPERHOT is 100% a John Wick simulator. Like, all the precision and timing and cool gun fights and taking enemy guns to use and just it being done so fast thanks to time being slowed when not moving makes everything so cool. Like watching a replay at full speed is like seeing some big budget, high end action film fight scene.

Go look up any Noel Vermillion combo video.

Ironically she's a close-range rushdown character, but her crazy gun animations are what makes her one of my favorite fighting game characters.

Only gun-fu in the sense that she has a very martial arts like fighting style that revolves around gunplay. IIRC it was one of the inspirations behind her character.

What about that great Jet Li game for PS2?

It's one of the best console games I've played, loved the combos and other stuff so much.

It had great game controls too, if I remember right. Gunplay wasn't so hot.

EDIT. Rise To Honor! That's the game!

EDIT2. Animation in that game... So fluid. Games these days concentrate on the wrong things.

there's this kickass half life 1 mod called the specialists...check it out. Not that many players any more these days, but people hop on if they see others playing. One of the best games evar

GunKata...

That's from those Terrible Kurt Wimmer films

the phrase GunFu existing long before Christian Bale joined in

Gunkata is such a corny / funny name though. I remember looking up people's amateur filmed gunkata videos to laugh at after watching Equilibrium.
