What are some games that feature John Wick-esque "Gun Fu" combat?

there's this kickass half life 1 mod called the specialists...check it out. Not that many players any more these days, but people hop on if they see others playing. One of the best games evar

Man, I lost so many hours to this and Action Half-Life back in the day.

There was a free multiplayer game on Steam a few years ago that did this perfectly and now I can't remember what on earth it was called.

I played it so much.

EDIT: DOUBLE ACTION BOOGALOO! It's so good!

3DMark2001

And pls it's called gunkata

This was created by Remedy using their MaxFX engine with Havok Physics implementation. It uses the same game engine as Max Payne 1 , but had a few additional enhancements made to it for 3DMark2001 that would later show up in Max Payne 2 (like Havok). Alan Wake used the most advanced version of MaxFX.

thats amazing

I now want to replay Max Payne 1 with the Kung Fu mod installed. There are some decent widescreen hacks available out there.

Some of these suggestions seem to be "cool acrobatic shooting" than anything akin to John Wick's style. Stylish precision and headshots are a must IMO.

I don't think a proper John Wick game could be a third person shooter.

John Wick doesn't aim. His reflexes and muscle memory are so superior, that lining up his aim and acquiring targets is not something he needs to think about and thus something the player should have to think about. Crowd control is the challenge John Wick faces so it should be the challenge the player faces. Reacting to the existence of an enemy threat is what you should have to worry about, not lining up a shot. If John sees them, they're shot. (Unless they're another assassin.)

I say again, it would have to play like an evolution of the Arkham combat. I just don't think there is a game like that yet.

Sounds like the perfect game would be like DDR hahaha

Dead to Rights?

Mad Max comes kind of close in some ways. The combat in Mad Max was taken from the Arkham games, but they also added some additional gun play with Mad Max's shotgun. I'm not saying that Mad Max is a John Wick type game, but the combat is closer to what you described.

Lionsgate should just team up with WB for a John Wick game, honestly.

Yes. Arkham-esque combat, with limited ammo so you need to disarm enemies, and a mark and execute style system for enemies at longer range. A focus on close quarters. Level design like Hitman but instead of setting up a target for a kill, it's about planning ahead and getting into position to take out enemies most efficently

If you can aim like a regular shooter, you can miss and John Wick doesnt miss

So Hitman-like sandbox levels + fast-paced steath mechanics + Arkham-style freeflow combat combined with Blacklist's shooting animations + Hotline Miami's flow of managing limited ammo and weapons

Mirrors Edge Catalyst does First Person Melee pretty well. Its strange at first but once it clicks its great.

The Origional Mirrors Edge has gun/acrobatic shooting mechanics but they arent great and a pacifist playthrough is the best way

Sounds like Watchdogs with better Melee options.

Some Max Payne Matrix and Equilibirum mods have this.

10,000 Bullets has this. It's one of my favourite PS2 games.

Not to be confused with the cancelled 100 Bullets video game that also had this.

Came here to say 10,000 Bullets as well. Pretty fantastic game but also pretty damn hard pretty quick.

Cannot find a decent gif but Wanted Weapons of Fate was a game that had different gunplay mechanics. Based on a movie as well.

Dead to Rights series.
10,000 Bullets.
Max Payne series.
Gungrave series.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Red Dead Revolver.

So basically a lot of PS2/Xbox era stuff. Stranglehold (360) was decent. Still have yet to try out Total Overdose or Chili Con Carnage (PSP). Resonance of Fate is great what I've played of it so far.

It's not really the same, but the first thing that came to mind was Red Steel 2. It's a game about smacking people upward with a sword, then shooting them out of the air for good measure. Also, you're a samurai cowboy.

It's not any kind of masterpiece, but it's probably one of the most-improved sequels in recent memory, largely due to ditching everything about the terrible first game except the name.

This sounds like good criteria. A lot of the games being mentioned like the Max Paynes, Stranglehold, F.E.A.R. are decently close, but are on the messy and chaotic side of action. Those games are about missing shots as much as they are about landing them (environmental destruction) and blowing stuff up, whereas John Wick is a much more "efficient" type of stylish combat.

TetraGenesis was right when they said the combat would be Arkham-esque in that you're controlling a character with near-perfect skill in moment-to-moment combat, and it's instead about when and where to shoot someone, and what combination of maneuvers you should use.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist's elaborated version of the "Mark & Execute" system from Conviction is great for this sort of stuff.

Thanks to this thread I've just purchased Max Payne 3 on PC. I played it on PS3 back when it came out, but it was very hard to pull off flash, adaptable techniques with the controller aiming. Now that I've seen what's possible with a KB/M setup, I'm gonna revisit MP3 and get into some Gun Fu action.

The Euphoria physics in MP3 is probably the best to ever grace a videogame too.

It's good shit played as an action game, honestly

It involves a lot of button mashing though, since controls and movements aren't that accurate.

It has nothing to do really with what the OP is asking.

Same goes for games in which you are not in control of the action (for people posting rpg combat that you just watch).

SuperHot and Max Payne are the answers.

Raw Data too, since you can actually move/reload like Wick. Melee is different.

I penned some ideas and designs not unlike this based on the comic Lazarus and its badass protagonist (who's name escapes me atm).

The idea came from thinking about how a 3D Hotline Miami could work. Like, how can you keep "one hit death" and "one hit kills" with enemies coming from any angle in a 3d space.

Thought of systems like
- auto aim in a v large crosshair (so you had to know where an enemy was but just pull the trigger to OHK them)
- CQC being OHK like Conviction/Blacklist
- but only against one enemy at a time, so in order to manage crowds/rooms you could throw enemies (eg into other enemies) and use them as human shields to buy a few steps.
- Hotline Miami's "pseudo stealth" where you can find efficient paths through levels without getting seen.

But yeah, one hit to you, or one enemy too close, and you're dead.
