What are some games that feature John Wick-esque "Gun Fu" combat?

It involves a lot of button mashing though, since controls and movements aren't that accurate.

It has nothing to do really with what the OP is asking.

Same goes for games in which you are not in control of the action (for people posting rpg combat that you just watch).

SuperHot, Stranglehold and Max Payne are the answers.

Raw Data too, since you can actually move/reload like Wick. Melee is different.

Yeah i was just chiming in.

Ftfy btw :)

Max Payne 3, nothing is even close.

In what way is Crysis combat anything like John Wick's style?

If I knew I was going to have to explain myself I never would have said anything

I guess in style it's nothing alike, but the *feel* of the combat reminds me of the execution in John Wick. Like if he had super-strength maybe

Okay this is falling apart

Haha, you tried. Gotta respect that.

This thread makes me want many things

I want a John Wick 3rd person game
To watch John Wick 2 for the first time
To finally play Max Payne 3, (owned it for 2-3yrs not played it once)
A Stranglehold movie
Stranglehold 2 the game
To buy that SplinterCell game
Rewatch Equilibrium
A New Matrix Videogame
Matrix Rebooted Movie series or TV Series
To play that 10,000 bullets game
A Maxpayne 4
Play Bayonetta again
To Play Hitman later today
A New Hitman Movie with Jason Statham
Play DMC
Replay Half Life 2 and Portal

Splinter Cell: Blacklist's elaborated version of the "Mark & Execute" system from Conviction is great for this sort of stuff.

This is the closest I've seen a game come to it... may have to pick this one up.

I quite like Stranglehold and Max Payne 3, but I don't really see the resemblance to the John Wick style of combat (to the point that I actually wonder if some people here are confusing John Wick and John Woo).

EDIT: looking at some of those gifs, I shouldn't say that I don't see it at all, but this sums up why I don't think it really captures that feel:
This sounds like good criteria. A lot of the games being mentioned like the Max Paynes, Stranglehold, F.E.A.R. are decently close, but are on the messy and chaotic side of action. Those games are about missing shots as much as they are about landing them (environmental destruction) and blowing stuff up, whereas John Wick is a much more "efficient" type of stylish combat.

A stranglehold movie? You mean Hard boiled?

Nah, man, you have to see the whole section

This is literally the only thing in this entire thread which resembles the John Wick style. Everything else posted has been cool games with slow mo or shooting but not the actual style of Wick which is a nice mix of judo/jujitsu and precision shots (with no misses).

It really does make me want a John Wick game though (or even to go see JW Chapter 2 again)

Splinter Cell Blacklist and Conviction are absolutely the closest games have come to John Wick's style. Feels very fast, disciplined, non-flashy, brutal, weighty.

Definitely kind of a criticized feature in Conviction but the mark and execute thing is VERY John Wick-esque.

why is noone talking about 'WET' for ps360?
underrated game imo. has some tech issues, but still a lot of fun.
plus you can't go wrong with the voice of Eliza Dushku.

Max Payne with the Kung Fu mod made it like John Wick styled gun-fu. Though over a decade before John Wick. I used to know the person who made that mod.

Hmm if you look closely it looks like a lot of those animations are from Matrix the path of neo. I wonder how he did that I've been trying to rip those animations for ages!

Edit: I did some digging and according to an interview, he hand animated all those animations himself.
Gamespy Interview said:
GameSpy: Can you describe how you created the mod? Did you render the new animations yourself?
Kenneth Yeung: Most of it required tools are actually included when you buy the game. There are helpful tutorials and guides available that teach you the basics. Past that, learning the ins and outs of the game engine is something you must discover on your own. It's difficult to describe the process involved in trying to program in some of the kung fu features, as there is no actual "code" per se, so conventional programming wisdom goes out the window. Many a sleepless night were spent doing unnatural things to the game objects, trying to discover certain engine quirks that would allow me to accomplish some of the features I was looking for -- with results hardly dependable or predictable.

I for one am quite shocked but also, the animations seem too similar to the matrix game one? Hmm either props to him for getting it done. If anyone has a handle on getting those animations out do give me a call!

Another to add max Payne 3 to the list . It's really the only modern (well last gen ) bullet shooter that gives you same gunfu gameplay of John wick. Headshots are brutal , rely on painkillers to survive , amazing physics engine for your body movement and the kills.

I would love a modern hd remake minus the long load times . Make it happen rockstar .

This. So god damn fucking much.

Its one of their best games and one of the best shooters ever. And its only held back by its long unskippable cut-scenes.

Multiplayer was also unbalanced as hell, but I have to respect that they managed to keep the game's slow-mo in that mode.

Edit: And of course Splinter Cell Blacklist. I've missed that game so much.

Haha!!! My lady and I went to see John Wick 2 last week and we came out and I literally said out loud, "why is there not a game for this movie?!" I went home and installed Max Payne 3 and I am happy. Forgot how fun that game is.

But seriously, why is there no John Wick game yet?

Starbreeze is making a VR one iirc. I would love to see something similarly styled. We don't have enough stylish action games tbh.

It is pretty impressive that he did it all by hand. I have a feeling that the Kung Fu mod and Enter The Matrix animation may have came from the same source. It is possible that Kenneth took stills from the DVD and matched up his key frames with them. Maybe Enter the Matrix did the same?

The Euphoria physics and animation engine for Max Payne 3 is so sublime. This is really the best implementation of it. The game still looks great to me, yeah the loading times are still a bit sad, but it runs great at 4k.

I would like to see a sequel, to be honest. Just let R* make a John Wick licensed game.

The problem with answers like RE6 and Max Payne is that they capture something in a three second GIF but lose it entirely in a five minute action sequence. I'd be interested to see a video of someone playing Max Payne for more than just a flashy slide or dive, and Resident Evil's idea seems to go no further than the ability to slide into enemies.

Max Payne is more John Woo than John Wick though.

Still though, the feeling of switching between weapons on the fly as you roll is the closest thing you're going to get to feeling like JW. Especially since Payne holds two handed weapons with his other hand when you're shooting with a handgun.

Yep. I installed Max Payne 3 last night and am playing through it now. Between this and Hotline Miami I'm getting my gaming Gun Fu fix for now.

I googled it to see if anyone else saw the resemblence, but the font used in at least John Wick 1 for subs of Russian dialogue looks exactly like Hotline Miami's.

I finished my RE4 Pro run after seeing John Wick 2. It's not gun-fu, but it still has the most satisfying shooting and reloading mechanics in any game I've played. And that's what really impressed me about the movie; how important accurate shooting and timely reloads were to his survival.

I disagree with RE6 being anything like gunfu. The actions in that game have no flow, the moves all feel separate and stiff (Despite the actions themselves being cool). And yes, I have learned how to play that game after people told me to watch tutorials.

Yes, this is, in my opinion, the best answer.

Oh, and I really want a Max Payne 4, 3 was fantastic in terms of gameplay (story was annoying).

Yes. Arkham-esque combat, with limited ammo so you need to disarm enemies, and a mark and execute style system for enemies at longer range. A focus on close quarters. Level design like Hitman but instead of setting up a target for a kill, it's about planning ahead and getting into position to take out enemies most efficently

If you can aim like a regular shooter, you can miss and John Wick doesnt miss

So Hitman-like sandbox levels + fast-paced steath mechanics + Arkham-style freeflow combat combined with Blacklist's shooting animations + Hotline Miami's flow of managing limited ammo and weapons

The bolded captures my point perfectly and is exactly why I can't get behind any of the the comparisons to John Woo style shooters that people are sharing (Max Payne and the like -- as excellent as they are).

Aiming absolutely cannot be a mechanic in a John Wick video game because then it means you could fail at it.
