What are the essential mech games?

Recently realised that despite being a fan of mech animes, I have never actually played a mech game. So what are the best mech games? I am more interested in ones with the best gameplay.

zone of the enders 2

macross (ps2) [jp only]

there's not really much that comes to mind... most stuff is mediocre, bad or requires niche taste (see: armored cores)

if you can get into it, armored core 4: for answer is really up there imo. maybe actually the best if not for it's armored core trait of being obtuse to get into

another century's episode and super robot wars series have ok gameplay but are maximum fanservice because they're crossover games

If you're a fan of Gundam definitely pick up Gundam Extreme Vs Full Boost. It is AMAZING.

Armored Core is also an excellent series for replicating the speed of anime style mech battling.

Hawken is your best bet for a weightier more western approach.

Metal Wolf Chaos
You're the president in a mech fighting enemies of democracy with patriotic might. Ironically it never came out in America and it's ridiculously expensive to even think about purchasing

Zone of the Enders 2
Gundam vs Gundam Extreme Vs series
VOTOMS PS2
Armored Core for Answer
Metal Wolf Chaos
Virtual On Force

I recommend the ZOE collection for PS3 and Custom Robo if you have a gamecube. There aren't many great Mech games unfortunately.

The best mech game in terms of immersion and experience is definitely Steel Battalion. Gundam Side Story for Dreamcast is also great.

For actions games:
Zone of the Enders 1 and 2
Armored Core: for Answer

For strategy games:
Front Mission 4
Super Robot Wars (pretty much anything, but the GBA original generation games are the only ones in English)

For RPGs:
Xenogears
With any luck Xenoblade Chronicles X

EDIT: Yeah, Lost Planet 1 and 2 are pretty darn good.

Mechwarrior 2 Titanium Trilogy
Mechwarrior 3-4
Mechwarrior Online
Mech Assault 1-2
ZOE 1-2
Armored Core 2
Steel Battalion 1-2
Killzone 2

Also, build a time machine and go back and play Chromehounds.

Or make a sequel happen. Whichever seems most plausible.

Gungriffon Blaze is really worth your time regarding console first-person mech shooters. For side-scrolling action, I'll recommend Thexder and the Assault Suit Leynos games. And Power DoLLS is a great wargame if you're into that genre.

If you have an adequate PC, it's free to try out Hawken and Mechwarrior Online for arena deathmatch needs.

PS3 has a bunch but nothing very good, you can try out the demos of any Armored Core games to see if you like that style. Front Mission Evolved was "ok" at best but had some fun moments with the mech customization. Zone of Enders HD Remaster and Lost Planet are probably the best bets. Even though Lost Planet's mechs are mainly just powerwalkers etc. Gundam Extreme Vs Full Boost is expensive and crazy japanese only Gundam style mecha game, fun if you can get used to the controls and fast pace.

SNES has some classics like the mentioned Cybernator and Front Mission Gun Hazard.

Lost Planet had probably the most satisfying mechs in recent memory. It's a stealth mech game really since only few people remember how big of a role the mechs played in that game. The mounting animation alone was so goddamn cool.

Game was so underrated mostly because the sequels soured everyone.

I really wouldnt call SSZero a "mech" game as its more a space shoot em up with a unit that turns into an fairly immobile weapons platform that just happens to look like a "mech"...

You want something that scratches that macross itch then import a real macross game "Macross Trial Frontier".

The Side Stories Blue Destiny trilogy on Saturn was awesome IMO, better than Dreamcast.

The fact you could use the virtual on sticks with it made that shit even more awesome back then.

SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division

Except that it's more just a good first person shooter that happens to have the player shooting giant guns in the hands of a giant mech half the time. The only unique mech mechanics come in the form of a not often used vehicle transformation mode.

So maybe not an essential mech game, but still a good game with mechs! Eh? Eh?

What is the difference between Armored core 4 and Armored core for answers? They seem to have two different wiki pages.

I enjoyed my time with Metal Warriors and Cybernator a lot, as far as 2D Mech games go. They look quite similar, but they still feel pretty different, and are both worth checking out. Both are Super Nintendo titles if you're interested in checking them out.
The Guardian Legend
This is probably not the type of game they are looking for, but I appreciate the suggestion nonetheless.
