What are/were the best kept videogame secrets?

Well if you press the quote button it will still be spoiler-tagged. So he either copy-pasted the quote manually, or he deliberately removed the spoiler tags. Either way he is an assface.
 
Does Mew count as a secret? People went crazy trying to catch that Pokémon. The whole "under the truck by the SS Anne" rumor was pretty big.
 
Without a doubt, it's Raiden being Metal Gear Solid 2's main character.

Man MGS2 was such a let down. :(
 
1) Metroid Prime. Everyone thought it was going to suck ass and hands-on impressions seemed to be that the game was beautiful but the game was bad. I had a lot of fun with that one. Metroid Prime 2 was the game everyone thought the first one was going to be: Decent but nothing memorable.

2) Diddy Kong Racing was another one. All of a sudden, this game came out of nowhere and was much more complete than Glitchy Rushed POS aka Mario Kart 64. Probably the best racing game out there until CTR in 1999.

3) Rare getting purchased. Came out of left field because Rare had a bunch of CG of upcoming Game Cube titles. I'm still waiting for Banjo 3, you British fucks. All of a sudden, Rare gets purchased. Then funny thing is how well they are supporting the GBA and barely gave Xbox any support. Sure Kameo and PDZ are out right away but I doubt we're going to see Rare move any faster than they have the last generation.

What was so surprising about an eviler version of Dark Force in PS IV? I was more surpised when the true villain/s from Phantasy Star II were revealed, and the cliffhanger ending that isn't even addressed in its sequels. A definite "wow wtf, really?" moment.
 
I liked the whale being a Gigas from Skies of Arcadia.

I havent completed SoTC but what bumkin posted doesnt seem OMGWTF.

Id also say Raiden from MGS2 and KOTOR mid twist

Some big surprises can't be talked about, even by the press because of NDAs. Raiden was certainly one of them.

a prequel to ICO
. If you want to think it is, more power to you, but that's your own crazy fanfic you got off GameFAQs forums, not something actually in the game. Just cause you can make up a complicated story that connects all the dots doesn't mean it's true.
 
Not only Raiden and how he was a cheap knockoff of Snake, but how the entire game of MGS2 and every boss was just a cheap knockoff of the exact same things in MGS1, AND how the story was a cheap knockoff of sanity.

Like ICO, the ending is meant to be open to many interpretations. Considering that Fumito Ueda is probably not retarded, I'm sure he knew that most gamers would see a link between both games with an ending like that.

Yes, but he's also on the record as saying that there's no connection beyond stylistic and thematic ones. That's one interpretation, but it's hardly something true. I haven't seen a cockamamie theory bandied around as gospel truth like that since "Rinoa is really Ultimecia!"

So you're saying game writers should bend over backwards to extract huge game spoilers from developers and print them in their magazines? I'm not so sure that'd be in their best interest. It'd certainly make me stop reading them.
 
Uh... Rinoa IS Ultimecia, and the rest of the story proves it. If she wasn't, then no one would have called Rinoa the last sorceress.

Holy moly, I thought if this was ever pointed out, it wouldn't be to you, of all people. Let's connect some dots.

Sorceress's live forever, as pointed out by the game's story line.
Rinoa and Edea are the last sorceresses.
Edea is controlled by Ultimecia.
Ultimecia wants to loop time to the point in which the game takes place.
Squall & co. defeat Ultimecia.
Squall dies in random desert after defetaing Ultimecia.
Rinoa goes onto balcony to see Squall.
Squall is in the same clothes he wore at the time he met Rinoa, in his fancy-type getup.
Everyone else is in their commoner clothes, including Rinoa, Cid, Squall, Zell and everyone else who was a part of Seed. Squall remains in the fancy-type clothes he wore during the first time he met Rinoa.
Rinoa does her two finger salute or whatever when she sees Squall.

If Rinoa is NOT Ultimecia, the game doesn't make sense, and the ending is completely worthless. The ending credits sequence is mostly shot so it looks like it's from a camcorder, yet Squall only appears afterwards. There would be no reason for the game to explicitly point out how Sorceresses live forever if it was only to talk about how Edea was hot while Cid is old. It all adds up! DON'T DENY THE TRUTH!
 
A secret that i thought was kept pretty secret, despite all the hackers and action replayers out here, was the Naboo Fighter being in Rogue Squadron for the N64. I remember rushing home to put in the code to get the fighter. And NOONE knew it was there until Factor 5 released the code, incidentally, close to the time episode I came out or something.
 
I knew about Raiden more or less the same day(s) the game came out. but I didnt know about
the president grabbing raidens crotch to check if he is a male
, and that is probably the shittiest scene in any game I have seen so far.
 
I think Halo 2 would have been the best ever if it hadnt been leaked through the pirates 2 or 3 days before release.

MGS2s pal conversion time ruined that supprise for me.

So the biggest supprise is defintely the twist in KOTOR, i was like

Then they showed the flashbacks and it all kind of clicked together.
