What are your comfort games?

Was extremely hungover yesterday, and decided I needed something nostalgic and familiar to see me through the day.

So I fired up Unreal Gold for the millionth time, perfect way to try out the new steam controller I thought.

Ended up finishing the whole game in one sitting. And I'd happily do it again, and again.

It got me thinking, Unreal Gold is usually the first game I go to install on any hardware to "test" and it usually remains on whatever storage device it's installed on permanently. It's my go-to game for when I just need "picked up".

So what are your "comfort" games GAF? Ones that are always installed ready to go for when you need them?

Phantasy Star Online v2 on Dreamcast. Play this offline, I always have a character going in this game. Slowly making my way through Ultimate.

Grand Theft Auto 4

Medieval II Total War, Stardew Valley, Railroad Tycoon II, Poker Night At the Inventory, King's Quest VII.

There are a bunch of other games that I also have installed most of the time, but those ones ^ basically never leave my computer and I'll never get tired of them so I don't think I'll ever stop having them installed all the time

eBaseball Pro Spirit might join that group once they release the full game in July.

oh right, and I've held onto my savefile and rom for The World Ends With You constantly for at least a decade, not sure if that counts :pie_thinking:, I think I've beaten it like six times, up there with Ocarina of Time. I did own that game legally back in the day, but I gave away my ds to one of my cousins years and years ago.

There's a few series from Atlus that I keep going back to - SMT, Persona, and DDS. One of the main reasons I'm still using my PS3 is due to some of these titles and they're always installed and ready to go for when I'm in the mood to play them. Same for my PS4.

International Karate Advance on the Game Boy Advance.

I loved The way of the exploding fist on the C64 and IKA captures that gameplay perfectly.

And sometimes I get my GBPocket out to play a round of Tennis or Tetris, just to wind off. No need for Raytracing, installation or whatever.

The Last of Us 2013 and Remake.

But I've got a lot of games I know I'll keep replaying and enjoying for the rest of my life.

Resident Evil 2002 (I just wish we got a proper Remaster like Zero instead of that upscaled mess)
Resident Evil 4 HD Project
Resident Evil 2 Remake
God of War III
Uncharted Trilogy & Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy

Dragon's Dogma 2 has a nice easy going vibe that I enjoy when I just want to chill.

Flight Sim 24 most recently. I can get lost in it for hours when in VR. It's super relaxing, especially with some chill music being streamed. London to Paris with a bit of Cocteau Twins.

Nioh 2 - fun to just get lost in the combat system, do some crazy stuff, style on some enemies, then end it with a cool sheathing animation.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - Probably the best balance between friction and accessibility that Monster Hunter will ever get. Some really fun fights, great to jump into random co-op, great to play solo. Great mods too, to add some freshness with new and changed monsters.
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed - My favorite arcade racer of all time. Great cast of characters and vehicles, and it was before they decided to turn it into a kart-racer.

If I knew where my iPod was, Space Invaders Infinity Gene - Uses your own mp3 collection to create custom stages where your spaceship evolves and changes over time. The perfect infinite shmup. Sadly, locked to iOS devices STILL, and that will likely never change. Wish there was a competent and accessible iOS emulator...

Destiny 2.

Quickly do a few public events in Cosmodrome, a couple of solo ops or strikes or just grind orders for the season pass, strange coins, dust or glimmer.

Most of my comfort games are all SNES. I think a mix of the general polished game play loops with nostalgia for a much "simpler" time in my life (in my 40s now). When our family is undergoing real stress, my wife and I will log some evening hours in something like Super Mario World, Earthbound, FF6, Zelda LTTP, Secret of Mana, or Chrono Trigger. 10/10 stress relief.

Zelda Minish cap
BoTW ToTK, those two could be my cozy games
CS source
Metroid Zero or any Metroid
Monster Hunter (any)
Gran Turismo 4
Titan Quest or Torchlight 2
Wildlands
Dark Souls Remastered
Far Cry 3
FF tactics
SD Gundam G Generation Spirit

well, depend on the mood

Hades and Mass Effect

I keep a lot of games permanently installed, but dont ever play them, mainly stuff i dont want to delete because it took effort to mod and i dont want to go through that again.

Think I have a different idea of comfort. But rocket league, everybody's golf, Lego horizon on steam deck (however on the hardest difficulty it's not always a cakewalk)

Counter strike. I always come back to it, especially during difficult times in my life. It's got a bit of an emotional hook that I've had since I was a kid.

Factorio is a close second but it depends, if I am sick as fuck I don't want to engage brain that much.

If I am feeling nostalgic I tend to opt for things like Demons Souls, Skyrim. Just stuff with a melancholy atmosphere and relaxing music

Monster Hunter World / Rise

Put on some music, squad up and start slaying. There is honestly nothing else like it.

The Atelier series.
So chill combat is relatively easy, even the timed ones arent "hard" and you just go around harvesting and crafting.
