What are your message board pet peeves?

People who break the linear nature of a thread by editing their post to quote someone who posted after them are the worst. Just make a new goddamn post.

1) I could care less

2) Predictable troll responses in every mass effect/xbox threads. Every time.

3) Posting images without a description because we should be cool enough to know what it is.

4) OT Thread about someone dying or something --> 50 puns and gifs and comments like "First post nails it!"

5) People who post their comments as experts when they really shouldnt. It happened in a tourism thread recently where someone said "Yeah, and thats why tourism in the middle east is nearly extinct". I pointed out it wasnt the case as i had personally just completed a study on this exact topic and numbers are up. He replied "Blah blah blah i dont care anyway who cares about facts LOL!" <-- it was along these lines. So basically, he made a sweeping generalistion, knew he was wrong and didnt care in the least to man up and admit it.

Why post on a topic if you really dont know anything about it? opinions are one thing but fudging facts and then not caring even if you are wrong?

-thread titles that cutoff
-"I mean" in sentences or paragraphs
-trolls who repeat themselves over and over with no new materials
-someone shitting up thread or trying to act funny

I hate when thread titles have words like, "GAF?, G/A/F?, GAF:" and similar. I can't explain it, but it just bothers me. It's perfectly fine in an OT, but it bothers me for general questions.

  • Circle jerk communities
  • People who write titles that doesn't give an adequate description of what the thread is about, hoping to get clicks. I'm pretty sure Dante reserved a ring in Hell for these people.
  • People who can't/don't use the quote tags
  • People who post pictures larger than what fits my 1024 pixel wide browser (I hate browsing in widescreen).

The need to have every statement followed or preceded by some variation of "in my opinion." So redundant and needlessly apologetic.

It annoys me too but you pretty much have to do it. If you don't you can guarantee someone will quote you with "well this isn't a fact, just your opinion".

I'm the furthest that you can get from a grammar nazi, but could we please just reread our posts for simple errors? Like typing gong when you meant to type going?

The fact that I can't get myself to stop wasting time on them.

That's so damn true.

And with that I'm going to bed.

  • Circle jerk communities

On that note, I've mentioned this before, but the post your pics thread is full of people (beautiful people) who I never see post in any other threads. Sometimes I wonder what the average joe poster looks like and those are never the people I see post in that thread. Beautiful people: post in other threads! One time I posted in that thread. One time.

People who don't capitalise the first letter of each sentence.

Members who have become joke characters, or have notoriety so they make every post 'funny'.

Abbreviations for games, movies etc. Just write the full title ffs. PEACE <-- That's my biggest peeve, and I have no idea why it annoys me so much. I just imagine some overweight, 30 something internet chode writing it, with his hat on sideways.

Most of the time those are "Germany, Australia, Florida?" where you're supposed to guess the origin of the story from the headline. That it also spells "GAF" (as in NeoGAF) is a coincidence.

You don't have to do it, even then.

Eh, I think it can be an effective way to communicate how mild your feelings are on a subject. It's redundant, yes, but it helps communicate tone, which is important for communication but typically absent in text. For example, I could have said, "Using 'IMO' is fine." But by qualifying it with "I think," I make it clear that I have no intention to be abrasive and confrontational about such a minor topic, and acknowledge my understanding that your thoughts on the topic aren't wrong per se. But yes, it can be overused. I probably over-qualify my posts. (You kind of learn to qualify when you have an unpopular opinion and other posters mob you to death.)

I thought of another pet peeve:
  • Uh, answering someone's question by ending your sentence with a condescending questionmark? (The "Duh!" is usually merely implied.)

On that note, people who assume that every poster is male by default.

Well, to be fair, we don't have a gender-neutral singular third-person pronoun, and "he or she" is extremely clumsy to both read and write. Couple that fact with the fact that the vast majority of posters here are male, and it's easy to see why "he" is the go-to third-person pronoun. No one means any offense by it, and it's easily correctable, and it has a very high chance of being correct, anyway. It is the most efficient way to go about things, which is why our brains developed the natural tendency to generalize in the first place. But I get why women who post here would tire of constantly being referred to as "he." It's why it's often tough to be a minority.

When people nitpick and complain about something (mostly movies and tv shows) based on a comic book, because it didnt follow the comic book exactly.

EX: Iron Man 3

My biggest pet peeve is when someone makes a thread saying say "should I get game X, or game Y?"...

and people answer "Both!"

Why do you think the guy is asking the question uuuurrrAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Stupid overused troll jokes like "the feel of______" anytime ninja theory is brought up. "hd towns are hard" whenever there's a ff13 thread. Like get some new material.

When I clearly make the best post in the thread and no one quotes me.

Best post in the thread. Why is no one quoting this?

(I know how you feel man. Sometimes I think my jokes are way on point, but that's about when the thread is dead and no one posts in it anymore.)

The "the feel of..." joke definitely quickly got to the point where I was rolling my eyes hard every time I saw it.

Those jokes usually don't bother me too much, but THAT one? God.

"-People who ask questions that could be answered by Google in less time than it takes to click Post Reply. For example, you see a thread about someone or something you've never heard about. Now normally you'd ignore the thread because you aren't familiar with the subject but sometimes you'll see someone post "who?" or some other question that -- in the year of our Lord 2013 -- you can type into your address bar and get an answer in milliseconds. Are you actually waiting for a response or is this just an attempt to be snarky and increase your post count?

-This one is probably just me though but I hate it when people don't explain their answers in threads where the subject is to post something that falls under a category set by the OP (like the million and five "Games that do/have X" threads on the Gaming side). It's pretty annoying!!!

I'm easily annoyed."

Good idea. Next time someone makes a "Should I get X or Y" thread with no further information to go on, I'm just going to say "both." Without posting your interests or what you liked and didn't like about similar games, asking just that is no more useful than looking up the Metacritic score.

Wut. Where did I say they wouldn't give any further information about what they like?

A good answer would be "well X game plays like this (blah blah blah) and is similar to (insert a game you think OP would be familiar with or stated he enjoyed). Now, Game Y game plays like this (blah blah blah) and is more similar to (insert another game you think OP would be familiar with or stated he enjoyed). Then give your personal preference.

"Both" is a shitty answer, no matter how you slice it.

On the gaming side, there are sometimes threads with people discussing/criticizing certain games, and there would always be a few people drive by shit posts with:

"Look everyone is trashing the popular series!"
"[insert series' name] hate thread? Hate thread."
"lol gaf"
"Your favorite games"
"LOOK I'M HATING YOUR FAVORITE GAME"

If you don't want to contribute to the discussion, then don't, jesus fucking christ.

Yeah, assuming the OP did provide some details, that is how I answer and all is right with the world. Unfortunately I see a lot of people not necessarily on this forum post topics like "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate or Luigi's Mansion 2?" Shitty, brainless answer for a shitty, brainless question. Someone else can berate OP for being lazy and not explaining himself, I'm tired of doing it.

Sure, those threads are bad. I'm talking assuming that the thread isn't a dumb comparison or not providing any info.

People still spam "both!" in those way too much.

Yeah, we agree...

I wasn't trying to argue with you, your post just reminded me of those lazy threads and gave me the idea to just not bother answering seriously anymore.

It's like when people don't read the OP. The worst case I ever saw of this was when I visited 4chan/fit/. The first thing I noticed was the sticky in big bold letters saying READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR ADVICE! accompanied with a dancing dinosaur gif, and then the first thread I saw was someone who was asking for advice without having read the sticky.

A dancing dinosaur gif.

People are lazy and don't care that they're wasting your time.

The worst thing is when people write a six paragraph reply to something and every paragraph is just starting the same argument anew, stating the same points again because it makes it look like what the person thinks a real argument should look like.

It's just so bad when there's a new paragraph saying the same thing as the first paragraph just because it's visually similar to what the poster interprets as a well run argument.

Don't you just hate it when people re-start arguments in the middle of their post?!

When OP introduces a topic, someone posts (and ONLY posts) a stupid picture, and that signals everyone else to just shit the thread.

So annoying.

People who use lol in every post, use rofl at all, but most of all people who use "..." in place of any other kind of punctuation.

Yeah, we agree...

Didn't mean to be so antagonist with you either. People who don't read anything in the OP or whatever are pretty annoying, yeah. Lazy threads are bad too.

And yup, this too.

.gif spamming in general has actually started to get on my nerves lately.
